SHI Relay - Hurstwood
3rd

Running 1st leg for a team that ended up being Emma and Claire (after 2 injuries and some last minute rearranging).

First leg was straight into the complex mining area so plan was to start cautiously and make sure I hit the first control. Ended up starting too slowly and was just about last out the start kite, checked codes with Kirstin and realised we had the same one so pushed to get past a few people.

Made a mess of 2, initially running too far left, then ending up at the other split and took a long time to figure out where my one was. As a result I was now a long way back in last place...not the start I was hoping for!! Pushed hard through the common controls 3-6 to slowly get myself onto the back of the main group again. Then saw Kirstin take the track route to 7 and thought that looked like a great idea so followed her. Managed to pass about 4 people wallowing in the marsh to my left so was a great choice. Added bonus when I nailed my gaffle and everybody else missed, so ended up going from last to 2nd at number 8.

Rest of the course was on my own, trying to stay ahead and out of sight of the chasing pack. Enjoyed the fast running controls in the forest but probably pushed a bit too hard as my breathing got out of control up the hill to the arena and had to walk up to 17 to get it under control. Last loop in the mining area was pretty slow due to oxygen debt and making doubly sure I was going the right places so I didn't lose lots of time right at the end.

Finished about 3mins down on Meg who had gapped everyone already to the first control. About 1min in front of Laura King and 3.5mins to the chasing pack.

Emma had a good run on 2nd leg to send Claire and Kim out together and chasing the victory. They got caught by Cat in the final loop and we ended up finishing in a close 3rd place.

SHI Individual - Hurstwood

Tussock trudge with 3 patches of intricate mining spoils and some long legs between the areas. Felt like I was going okay for the most part but did not understand the first area of mining at all. Lost a load of time to 2 and 19. First time in ages I've genuinely not known where I ran, even looking at the map afterwards.
Also lost some time at 14 when I ran close to the right place, saw people leaving the control and thought they hadn't got it so followed them towards next control. Stupid.
