Cerkno Cup #5 - Lome
1st

They saved the best area till last. This was so much fun!

Was very slow through the first 2 controls, struggling to run as it was so rocky and slippery. Then missed a track junction to 3 and ended up clambouring through some green to get to the second track.
So didn't feel like the best of starts so was very surprised to catch sight of Zlata exiting 6 as I was coming into it. I knew that I was about 2mins behind her in the overall standings and she'd started 2mins ahead of me today, so the challenge was on!
Pushed hard along the tracks to 7 and managed to catch her just as we reached the control. Took different routes to 8 and I got a bit of a gap . 9 was a tricky control through green into a very detailed area, so took my time to get it right and not rush off just to stay ahead of Zlata. Had a bit more of a gap now, straightforward to 10 then gave it everything I had on the track to the last control as I couldn't remember exactly what the overall difference was.

Turns out I only needed to catch about 1.5mins so I ended up winning overall by 1min :) And won todays stage by 2.5mins. Nice end to the week!

Cerkno Cup #4 - Cerkno
1st

Yippee back in my comfort zone! Fun little sprint around Cerkno village. Was actually quite tricky in places with the tight alleyways. Took the wrong route on the long leg to 13 but luckily all the other top runner did also. Got a bit behind in the nav coming into the tricky area on the 2nd loop but managed to stay in front for a 9sec victory.

Tim won also so nice double victory for the Robertsons and Jonny 2nd so good day out. :)

Cerkno Cup #3 - Ski Centre Cerkno

This was so much fun! Finally some nice runnable forest (well when the hills weren't horrendously steep anyway...)

Caught the chairlift up to the arena at the top of a ski field (1200m). Could hear thunder beginning to rumble just as I was about to start. 1 was a scary downhill leg through scattered trees which I took quite carefully, making sure not to drop too low. Hit it almost perfectly though so good start. As a result, I hadn't planned 2 at all and spent a long time faffing about before realising I was being stupid trying to go straight and opted for the track route that went most of the way to the control. Was a fun little technical area from 2-5 and made sure to take it carefully. Caught sight of Immy (2mins) and Tessa at 4. Took a gel climbing out of 5 then was running with Immy on the long leg to 6 until she decided to drop through the forest and go right instead. Had no idea if I was ahead or not then took the bad left route to 8 and was certain she would have got ahead. Got a bit of a second wind after the drinks stop at 9, then the thunderstorm hit just as I was approaching 10 and got absolutely drenched. Was loving it!

Finished 1st in w21e, but 5th out of the SEEOC people. Really enjoyed this. Temperature drop definitely helped and enjoyed running through much nicer forest.

Slow plod with Tim, Jonny and Berger clan down to a really cool little gorge that Tim had found. Really refreshing swim in the rain, got out just in time before the river started flowing very fast from all the heavy rain in the mountains.

Enjoyed this up to 9 when the heat got to me and completely hit the wall. Last loop was an absolute struggle with dizziness and just wanted to finish so I could get water. Forest even grottier than yesterday...makes Latvia forests seem beautiful now!

Was surprised to catch sight of Immy already to the 1st control (2mins) then probably pushed a bit too hard through the next few controls trying to catch her. Never actually caught up and didn't see her again after 4.
Fine through until 10 when I completely missed seeing the obvious track route to the right and decided to link up some tracks going straight. This was a terrible idea as the undergrowth was horrible and ended up bashing about for ages.
Then completely lost it on 13 when I went the wrong direction out of the control and ended up at the open clearing.

Cerkno Cup #1 - Kalce

When I signed up for this I thought it was going to be beautiful karst terrain like Alpe Adria a few years ago. But this was super grotty forest with lots of rock and felling. Didn't really enjoy any of the course to be honest. Lots of mistakes...bigger ones at 1 (didn't see flag), 9 and 12 (bad compass direction). Absolutely melting in the heat as well which didn't help. Hit the wall about 6 controls in.

Long adventure in the mountains from Glen Muick with Jonny.

Was super windy climbing up to the first munro, so strong that we couldn't move at times, so wasn't too keen to keep going. But once up the top we changed direction slightly and it actually wasn't too bad for the rest of the run.
Was surprised how flat and runnable the whole thing was and quickly chose to ignore all of the bail out routes and do the whole loop :)
Finally started to struggle just as we left the final munro, with 10km still left to go! Was all on a big 4wd track but my legs were like jelly and every tiny stone was hurting my feet. Somehow crawled my way back to the carpark with Jonny feeding me marshmallows.

Absolutely exhausted today. Very lethargic, although actually ended up doing quite a lot of walking. Took mum on a map walk from the house into Ratnieki to visit my favourite hill and the nice Scandinavian type forest. Showed her some filthy Latvian green forest on the way back though just so she didn't get the wrong impression of Latvian forests ;)

Then in the afternoon Mum, Dad, Marlene and I spent a few hours walking around Sigulda Castle and the very very steep steps to a couple of sandstone caves.

Body said nope :(

This was just horrible. Had the longest split to 1 and was already so far behind before we even entered the forest, and I hadn't even done anything wrong! Then took a bad route to 2 and was suddenly very far behind with only China, Italy and Poland. Already suffering massively just trying to run up the tiny hill to the arena passage. Then basically walking the rest of the course as I felt so terrible. Was as if someone was sitting on my lungs, couldn't breath at all and completely out of energy.
Navigation was fine though, so at least I limited the damage slightly. Had to stop in a stream on the long leg to cool off and have a drink then the last few controls were just painful as they were easy sprint controls, but could barely move.

Immy also had trouble out there and lost a bit more time, and Lizzie ran well to pull us up a couple of places
Team finished up in 19th so slight improvement on last year.

Feeling rubbish all morning but it started raining halfway through my warmup which made me happy and got me in the right mood!

Really enjoyed the course. Was super dark in the forest for the first 5 controls in the rain, so had to take it extra careful to read the map. Safe route to 1 then slowly built up more confidence throughout the course. Bit of a compass direction error on 3 but corrected once I hit the track. Bumbled my way through the next few controls, then got caught in some green on the way to 8 and lost 1min. Got caught by a girl from Belarus and Ukraine so tried to hang onto them across the flat riverbed. Got dropped on the hill to the arena but they then missed the control after arena and I caught back up again.

Finished feeling pretty pleased with this run as it felt quite clean throughout and was running comfortably. Result wasn't quite as good as I thought it would be, but in hindsight I was probably being a bit too cautious and not aggressive enough through the terrain. Don't think I really got into race mode until the end when I was chasing the other 2 girls.

Middle model

Ughhh woke up feeling very broken. Could barely walk down the stairs in the morning as both achilles (particularly the left) were so stiff. Also woke in the middle of the night with a very sore throat which had turned into a full cold by morning.

Hobbled/walked around some controls on the model map. The ones on big hillsides were okay but struggled with compass direction on the vague, flat areas to controls in pits.

WOC Sprint Relay
12th

First leg in a team with Tim, Cam and Lizzie.

Start lane was super narrow and I was starting on the 3rd row, so just got completely swamped at the start. As a result, I'd barely looked at my map so had to make an instant left/right decision. Decided to go left but only 3 other girls had done that so was like aw no I've messed this one up already. But got to the control just before Elena Roos who was first from the other group.

Then slowly got overtaken by people through to the next split where I had the longer one and was suddenly way at the back. Put in quite an effort along the track back towards the arena, then everyone split around the building to 6 and I chose to go left (again with only 2 others). Got to the control further up in the pack. Nice!

Run through and 2 park controls was where it really started hurting. Couple of teams came past me, then there was a bit of a gap so was just desperately trying to hang on and stay close to Charlotte so Tim and Kris could work together. Handed over in 14th place, 48secs down on the lead.

Tim hung onto Kris for the first half then got quite tired in the second, but managed to pull us up to 6th, only 39secs from the lead!
Then Cam and Lizzie had stable runs for us to finish in 12th place...equal best woc result.

Haven't been this nervous for a race in ages. Got woken up in the morning with my stomach cramping up. Started at the same time as Maja - same as in Scotland when I had qualified in 4th place, so was feeling really pumped and excited to go.
Instantly confused on the first control with the start triangle being back the direction we had just run. But after reaching the first control, I relaxed and started running well. Only real time loss was on 12 when I initially thought the control was on this side of the wall, then stopped to read my descriptions, failed for a bit then realised it was on the other side.
Safely qualified, but also didn't leave a lot of energy in reserve for the final.

Spent the whole first loop feeling very stressed out with dodging pedestrians whilst trying to read the map and run over very rough cobblestones. Wasn't able to read ahead at all and constantly felt like I was behind on the nav.
Second loop was a bit quieter but legs had nothing left after this mornings race.

Still, it's my best WOC sprint placing so happy with the result.

Split the course into 2 parts...10mins and 6mins long. Very hot and navigating poorly even though I'd already looked at all the route choices the day before. Really struggled to take in info from the map.
