Meadows Mile race

Got very boxed in at the start and was a long way back. Went hooning past so many people on the stretch past the pavilion all the way to middle meadow walk before finally getting amongst people more my pace. Right behind a large group of guys going into the final stretch but couldn't turn my legs any faster to sprint past them.

1sec slower than the one other time I've raced this (exactly 1 year ago) so happy with that. Didn't feel quite so sickening as last time.

Sprint HIIT class at the Commie gym. This was tough! Instructor was injured so wasn't cycling and kept walking round the group telling us to increase the resistance and spin faster.

Scottish Champs Relay - Roseisle
2nd (Me, Rona, Rachel Brown)

Had been looking forward to this all week but on Wednesday I unfortunately developed a rather large boil in a bad place which made any kind of movement rather painful, let alone running. Didn't want to let down the team though so decided to run and hopefully suffer through the pain.

Started out steady and was just behind Grace as we entered the green. Wasn't sure of my exact location the whole way through the green but was sensible enough to follow the right trains. Same splits as Grace so we popped out into the white forest and no other girls were in sight. Probably pushed a bit too hard here as I got caught up racing the boys and wanted to make sure that nobody on the other gaffles were ahead.

Got a bit of a gap to 4 and settled into a more comfortable pace to 5. In the wrong reentrant at 5 so lost a bit of time there. This meant that at the turnaround at 6 Grace, Beth and Megan Keith (junior) were right behind.

Leading through till 8 but at this point I was really starting to struggle physically. Luckily the others weren't quite on top of the navigation so I was able to catch back up through 9 and 10. Grace went the wrong direction out of 10, then Beth out of 11 so was in the lead. Couldn't work out the contours at 13 and slowed right down but still went to the wrong place and lost maybe 30secs.
Adrenaline had finally run out at this point and started to realise how much pain I was in, making the last part of the course an absolute struggle. Was surprised to see Grace pop out ahead of me at 16 as I thought I was still leading. Changed over to Rona about 25secs down. Happy enough with that given my situation, did my job.

Rona pulled us up into a strong lead with 6mins down to the EUOC first team. Then Rachel (14 year old) ran very well to finish only 12secs behind EUOC. Give us a few more years and we could have a very strong team :)

Tried to AJ again. Was okay, not great. Hurt if I tried to speed up and push the water faster with my legs. So basically just letting them hang down, barely moving and pumping my arms real fast to try get the heart rate up.

Took the ole mountain bike for a spin out to Gladhouse for my first time ever! Now I can appreciate why everyone loves cycling here so much ♥♥ Weather was absolutely lovely, 20 degrees and feeling very summery. Went through a farm on a fun gravel track with lambies everywhere that reminded me of home.
Stopped for a picnic lunch at Gladhouse then back down the hill to home. Didn't enjoy the roads back into Edinburgh after the quiet country roads.

(injured)

Plan was to do the Meadows 2 mile race followed by a 2km tempo. However was having a bit of a grump as everything was going wrong/not working. Got 2mins into my warm up and my achilles was hurting quite a bit which was just the last straw.

Did some core, IMR exercises and stretching instead.

Along the coast to Musselburgh, cycle path to Dalkeith then back into Edinburgh.

Walking 4:20:15 [0] 15.68 km (16:36 / km) +2098m 9:57 / km

Epic adventure up Pizzo di Vogorno (2442m) with Tim, Tommy and Anni.

First hour was a bit boring as I went back to the car to change shoes as my foot was sore in inov8s so had to catch the others up.

Such an awesome track with abandoned stone cottages appearing all over the place. Got a bit sketchy when we reached the ridge at the top as there was quite a bit of snow about. I was slipping all over the place in my normal running shoes and we had to do a fair bit of rock climbing to reach the top.
Then had so much fun running down a big stretch of snow. There were streams and rocks underneath so every now and then we'd sink up to our knees and fall flat on our faces. Path continued down through some gorgeous beech forest and past even more stone cottages before ending with some lovely waterfalls and gorge.

Followed this with a lovely dinner at the Aussies place in their amazing old stone village. Sitting outside in the sunshine till 9.30pm at a stone picnic table with vines overhead. Gorgeous :)

Note
(rest day)

90mins walking on the long model map. Stunning views from the top over Bellinzona and the EOC long area.
Left quad doms are sooo bad. Struggling to walk properly as my leg just doesn't function! Downhills are the worst. Think this rivals Grasmere for some of the worst doms I've ever had.

Watching the middle final. Really wished I could have run it...course/terrain looked awesome.

Nice run with Tim from our house in Rivera. Out along a small road/gravel track then back along a nice single track. Quads absolutely dying on the downhills after yesterday.

EOC Middle Qual - Carona
20th

Finished feeling really happy with this run. Obviously disappointed not to qualify for the final but for the most part i think i ran as well as I could and was hitting all the controls spot on.

So close to qualifying for most of the race, in 14th place with 30secs to spare at control 9. Then going into the last technical control of the course just absolutely hit the wall. Head was just completely dizzy and took a terrible route right underneath the cliffs which involved some steep climbing and lost over a minute on this leg. Had already started to wobble on the track leg to 9 and even had to walk a bit despite it being flat, so think I was just at my physical limit.

Middle model. Forest is absolutely lush! Absolute orienteering paradise around controls 37, 38 and 39. Sadly I don't think tomorrow will have anything like that part.
Right achilles very tight and sore to touch.

Job done...just. Very stressful few minutes at the end waiting to see if I'd made it.

Thought I'd had an okay run so was a bit surprised to be so close to missing out. But looking at the map again, I definitely lost out on some of the route choice.

EOC Sprint Final - Mendrisio
42nd

29 degrees, long and hilly sprint is definitely not ideal. Absolutely roasting before I started and the water I'd poured over my head had dried in the 2mins it took to reach the prestart.
I think the heat flustered me a bit as I was quite scrappy through the first few controls and wasn't completely focused. Took the time to plan the long leg and even stopped at the control. As a result, it was actually one of my best splits which doesn't usually happen on such a long leg.
Scrappy through 6 and 7, then leaving 7 I couldn't find the alleyway I'd literally just run through and tried to go in an olive green bit. Absolutely hit the wall climbing the stairs to 14 and was just stumbling around the last loop which was such an unnecessary loop anyway.

Note

Very stressful day as we had issues using Tim's credit card to hire the car. 3 hours later we finally left Milan airport with a car from a different company.
Brief stop at the accommodation before getting accredited, team meeting, model event, dinner, sleep. Absolutely exhausted...not the ideal preparation!
6 PM

Orienteering 19:49 [2] 3.72 km (5:20 / km) +77m 4:50 / km
shoes: Mizuno Enigma 3

Jogged around the model map with a few faster legs and some strides at the end. Felt absolutely rubbish. Took the first 10mins to relax from the stressful day before finally doing some decent navigating.
