Orienteering race 13:56 [4] 3.6 km (3:52 / km)
shoes: Inov8 F-lite 195 Blue 2

WOC Sprint Qual - Forres West
Qualified in 4th place in my heat so really happy :) Race went pretty well, got a bit flustered at the start when a van pulled out in front of Maja and I. But from number 3 onwards it was good. Second half of the course was just a running race, which was tough.

Running (Warm Down) 5:00 [2] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)

Orienteering 23:04 [3] 2.65 km (8:42 / km) +42m 8:03 / km
shoes: VJ Bolds - Yellow

Training at Loch of Boath.
Did a 20min walk looking at distance judgement and picking out hilltops.
Then Jean kindly put out some toilet paper controls for us, so ran round 2, 3, 6, 5, 4. Feeling a lot more confident after this than on Monday.

Note

20mins walking round a sprint course in Dingwall. Trying to identify other features to use besides counting alleyways.
6 PM

Running (Warm Up) 9:48 [2] 1.89 km (5:11 / km) +55m 4:32 / km
shoes: Inov8 F-lite 195 Blue 2

Orienteering 14:10 [3] 3.37 km (4:12 / km) +44m 3:57 / km
shoes: Inov8 F-lite 195 Blue 2

Practise sprint race in Inverness (Kinmylies). Really tricky housing estate on the side of a hill, so was full on navigation the entire time. Had to stop at a couple of controls to plan the next leg, as I was too busy navigating the turns of the current leg. Eased off once we crossed the main road and the course became more running.

Running (Warm Down) 8:59 [2] 1.46 km (6:10 / km) +11m 5:57 / km

Orienteering 53:03 [3] 6.93 km (7:39 / km) +93m 7:10 / km
shoes: VJ Bolds - Yellow

Forest training at Craig Leach.
Really did not go well at all. First control was fine, then just could not make sense of the map or forest at all. Lost all confidence and just running/wandering round in circles at 6. Stopped to refocus at 6, then managed to go alright up to 13, which was just a tiny hilltop in the green. 14 wasn't much better so bailed out to the track and ran back.
Positives = did some good track running at the end...least I'm still good at that.

Easy exploratory run of Glasgow. Down to the river and around Glasgow Green. Then up past Tennent Brewery, a loop of Glasgow Necropolis and the cathedral. Then back via the local housing estate and Sighthill for some orienteering vibes :)

Exploring round Glasgow with Emma.

Running (Warm Up) 9:00 [2] 1.77 km (5:05 / km) +6m 5:00 / km
shoes: Inov8 F-lite 195 Blue 2

Orienteering 21:55 [4] 4.66 km (4:42 / km) +67m 4:23 / km
shoes: Inov8 F-lite 195 Blue 2

Sprint training starting from Dynamic Earth and running round some of the tight alleyways at the bottom end of the Royal Mile, across to a housing estate and finishing back through the alleyways.
I ran the first 13 controls hard (~10mins), then jogged some of the easy running legs through to 17. Ran the long leg 17-18 hard so that I hit the alleyways at the end in a bit of oxygen debt. Ran from 17-finish hard (7mins).

Running (Warm Down) 12:00 [2] 2.22 km (5:25 / km) +56m 4:48 / km
shoes: Inov8 F-lite 195 Blue 2

Running (Warm Up) 8:29 [2] 1.58 km (5:22 / km) +55m 4:34 / km

Orienteering 19:07 [4] 3.97 km (4:49 / km) +115m 4:12 / km
shoes: Inov8 F-lite 195 Blue 2

Sprint course round Ponderosa. Mostly okay, took a bad route on a couple of controls when I got caught up in the current leg and didn't plan ahead the next one. Had to do a detour around the park in the middle as they were putting up fencing for a concert. Physically feeling pretty rubbish on the climb at the end.

Orienteering 12:33 [4] 2.43 km (5:09 / km) +27m 4:53 / km
shoes: Inov8 F-lite 195 Blue 2

Jogged 1-5 as these were fairly boring, easy legs. Then ran 5-13 hard through the housing estate. Plan was to jog through to 16, then do another sprinterval through the second housing estate...but was feeling exhausted, and most of the controls were just a revers of the first course.

Running (Warm Down) 5:48 [2] 1.2 km (4:50 / km) +11m 4:37 / km
shoes: Inov8 F-lite 195 Blue 2

Running 1:17:48 [3] 12.13 km (6:25 / km) +588m 5:10 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon Orange

Run with Jonny and his Dad up Mam Tor, then along the ridge in the mist for a very long time before dropping down towards Edale. Wasn't feeling great most of the run, but went through a really bad patch going down this hill and along the farmland at the bottom. Just struggling to breathe properly and get enough oxygen in. Then ran back up the hill to the saddle near Hollins Cross. Managed to get out of my bad patch when a bunch of about 30 flies started attacking my face, and was just swatting round at them and running fast to get away. Actually ended up feeling pretty good up the final climb.

Orienteering 14:31 [4] 3.41 km (4:15 / km) +15m 4:10 / km
shoes: Inov8 F-lite 195 Blue 2

Park sprint event at Horsham Park. Pretty easy course, but still a fast run with a map. Still managed to miss a track near the end and lose 10 seconds though :P Feeling pretty rubbish and coughy, but was running fairly quickly.

Running (Warm Down) 6:52 [2] 1.21 km (5:41 / km) +1m 5:39 / km
shoes: Inov8 F-lite 195 Blue 2

Running 56:14 [3] 7.8 km (7:13 / km) +204m 6:23 / km

Walked with the fam to try and find the 'geological attraction' that was marked on the map...but all we could find was this lil cliff. Then ran back to the summerhouse along some of the Orange terrain marathon single track with Tim. Was heaps of fun :) Kind of like Czech forest in places.

Running 44:46 [3] 7.21 km (6:13 / km) +157m 5:36 / km
(sick) shoes: Asics Trabuco Pink

Easy run round the Green Loop in Bovallstrand with Dad. Such a cool lil track. Terrain just kept changing....like rocky, then pine-needle forest floor, then open bare rock, then grassy forest tracks.
Feeling better than yesterday, but still enjoying the easy pace.

8 PM

Running 19:04 [2] 3.37 km (5:40 / km) +70m 5:08 / km
(sick) shoes: Asics Trabuco Pink

Damn, the cold I thought I'd escaped on Friday caught back up to me :( Feeling pretty miserable most of the day and had to convince myself to get out for a lil yog post-dinner. Found a really cool single track in the forest which was fun.
Spent all afternoon rock hopping round Ramsvikslandet though....so wasn't completely lazy day.

Tuesday Jul 14, 2015 #

6 PM

Running 40:35 [2] 5.25 km (7:43 / km) +123m 6:55 / km
shoes: Asics Trabuco Pink

Exploratory run with Tim and Marlene from the summerhouse. The adventure track was rather adventurous and lost it many times. Ended up being more of a rock hopping experience than actually running. Did a bit of easy jogging by the sea at the end.

Running 57:27 [3] 12.57 km (4:34 / km) +3m 4:34 / km

Öland is soooooo flat!!!!! Nice to run faster again though after all the forests in Rauland. Ran across some nature reserve area...just looked like a desert to me. Good mental training ;)

JWOC Tour - Day 5
Good run today. Getting sick though, so was in oxygen debt for most of the race, and had to stop at each control in order to control my breathing enough to see where to go next.
9th place, only 5mins behind Simone today :)
5 PM

Running 1:39:59 [3] 10.43 km (9:35 / km) +700m 7:11 / km

Easy warm down up Gaustatoppen with Jonny ;)
Such incredible views from the top!! Don't think I've ever seen so much rock in my life!! Took a more direct route on the way down to run down a snow slope. Was so much fun we ran back up again to run down it a second time :)

Orienteering race 1:04:56 [4] 8.03 km (8:05 / km) +278m 6:54 / km
shoes: VJ Bolds - Purple

JWOC Tour - Day 4
Struggled with the first half of the course through the Jwoc middle final area, then went really well on the open marshes in the second half. Again lost a lot of time on the long leg to 2...not so much the route choice I don't think, more just stopping far too often along the leg to check where I was. Did a fantastic face plant going full speed down an open marsh and just completely bailed :) Softest terrain ever to land on though!
11th place, 13mins behind Simone.

Wednesday Jul 8, 2015 #

Note
(rest day)

Wanted to go up Gaustatoppen, but the weather wasn't very good. So just played cards instead :)

Orienteering race 53:04 [4] 7.89 km (6:44 / km) +174m 6:04 / km
shoes: VJ Bolds - Purple

JWOC Tour - Day 3
Such an epic map..spent about half the race running across open marshes, then finished with some tricky contouring and diagonal downhill controls in the Jwoc middle qual area. Thought I ran pretty well at the beginning, but seem to have lost a lot of time on the route choice leg to 6. #7 was a scary looking contouring leg with very little features to navigate off, ended up way too far above the control with no idea where I was, quickly decided I needed to bail to the track, then about halfway down I crossed a stream thought I knew where I was on the map, popped over the hill and there it was :)
17th place, 10mins behind Simone and 6mins behind 2nd.

Running (Warm Down) 5:06 [2] 0.86 km (5:55 / km) +12m 5:32 / km

shoes: VJ Bolds - Purple

JWOC Tour - Day 2
Much more enjoyable forest than the first day...perhaps had a lil too much fun out there and forgot to push hard at times :p Winning after the first 3 controls! Then took a bad route choice to the 4th and lost about 3mins. Lost a bit of time on 8 and 9 as well.. just no real plan and trying to find a boulder in the middle of green.
15th place, 7mins behind Sabine

Running (Warm Down) 9:18 [2] 1.65 km (5:39 / km) +52m 4:52 / km

shoes: Inov8 F-lite 195 Blue 2

Ran the JWOC women's sprint course.
Had seen the gps on the big screen and there were people starting every 15 seconds, so that made it a bit easier. But brain wasn't entirely focused after all the excitement from JWOC :)
Finished in 2nd place, 1min behind Simone :)

Running (Warm Down) 7:47 [2] 1.31 km (5:57 / km) +23m 5:28 / km

shoes: VJ Bolds - Purple

Jwoc Tour - Day 1
Simone started 1min after me and went past before I even got to the first control :p Such tough terrain...my calves were cramping for the first half of the course, so was doing lots of walking and scrambling over rocks. Then came right a bit towards the end. Navigation was pretty shoddy throughout, just not with it today.
But I saw a moose (correction: elk)!!!!! So that made it all worthwhile :)

Friday Jul 3, 2015 #

7 PM

Running 34:18 [2] 5.04 km (6:49 / km) +158m 5:53 / km

Exploratory run with Jonny up some wickedly steep ski field behind the house. Then onto Skipsfjell. Such incredible views across to Gaustatoppen.

Thursday Jul 2, 2015 #

3 PM

Running 45:47 [3] 8.96 km (5:06 / km) +48m 4:58 / km

Easy run along the canal from Jonny's grandads. Was pouring with rain for the first half, but still really warm. So it was heaps of fun splashing through puddles :)

Hope Fell Race
Super hot evening (28°C+) so was melting before we even started. Started well just behind 1st woman then absolutely died in the open at the top of the first climb. Calves cramped up going down into the forest, so even the downhill was tough, then just a mish of a climb back up to the top of Win hill (was walking almost all of it!). Felt really dizzy on the top and just managed to stumble back down the hill to the finish. 2nd girl again, 4mins behind 1st.
The free chocolate brownie, juice and showers at the end was much appreciated/needed :)
