Had an absolute 'mare trying to get to the start. Didn't realise how far it was to run onto the map, so was looking round way to early and wondering why nothing was making sense.

Jogged around most of the Sheffield City Race course from earlier this month. Felt absolutely terrible and was navigating like a complete novice.

In Sheffield :D Got forced out on a run an hour after I arrived. Ran up Porter with Patrick (and Will for a bit) whilst Jonny was tempo-ing.

Wednesday May 27, 2015 #

Note

Ran out of time before flight and weather was rather shite anyways.

Boulder Hill. Still some patches of snow up the top, which was cool :) The ice combined with slippery clay made descending pretty sketchy though.

Belmont Farm. Here, there and everywhere. Legs were fairly tired after the last 2 days.
There was still patches of snow up near the airstrip where the sun hadn't reached!!! Never seen snow on Belmont Farm before, so that was exciting :)

Ogang long run with Dad, Magnus, Greg and Sarah. Starting from Stratton Street, ran partway up Belmont then dropped down to Korokoro Dam, along to Baked Beans then all the way up to Belmont Trig. Was epic seeing all the damage from the storm last week, with bridges that have been destroyed and shifted downstream and debris everywhere. Stopped a fair bit, but who couldn't on such an awesome day. Clear blue skies and could see for miles in all directions and across to the South Island. Was pretty awesome :)
Magnus, Dad and Sarah dropped down Middle Ridge to the cars, while Greg and I continued round the Dress Circle and down Bulls Run back to home.

Parkrun - Lower Hutt

Thought I'd do this as a pre-Europe fitness test and to compare with the one I did pre-Europe last year (19.34mins). Aim was to take the first 2km cruisy in around 3.45-3.50mins/km then push harder on the way back, but felt really comfortable at the pace I was going. First km went out hard, then tried to cruise and stay relaxed for the next 2km and push home fast for the last 2km. Kept closing in on the guy in front of me, then he'd put in a burst and get away again (not helped by the fact his girlfriend yelled out to him "don't get chicked!").
Looked down at my watch close to the end and saw it was 17.20mins, so was like jeez better put in a good sprint for the line and go for pb. In the end, 3 seconds short....but super happy to even be close to the time I managed after 4 months of solid training in Europe last year :D

Standard Western hills loop. First 15mins with Dad, then he took a shortcut as his achilles were hurting. Was super dark/slippery in Jubilee Park and didn't have a headtorch, so was taking it very slowly. Rolled over on my ankle at one point, but managed to shake it off. Seems to be okay now, little bit sore.

Was regretting not running yesterday, as today was sooo much worse!! Massive downpours and flooding everywhere with heaps of roads closed, so we got to go home early as nobody could focus on working anyway!

Ran up Hill Road, Old Coach Rd, Crestview, home with Dad (for the first half). Was actually really warm and managed to get a break in the rain so wasn't too wet either. Did a bonus hill up to the pylon, then spent the rest of the run trying to catch up to Dad. Turns out he'd come up the 2nd track to the pylon and was actually behind me the whole time!!

Twalk Leg 4
Ughhh worst leg of them all....zero points in almost 4 hours!! Was not a happy feeling trudging back to the hash house with 0 points. Luckily everyone else suffered too, with most only getting 1 point. The winning team managed 5 points in 8 hours!! Searched around for ages at 1, 2, 12 and 3, but couldn't find any. Apparently #2 with the clue 'grass is greener', wasn't even on the fence, it was just in a random patch of grass somewhere. And #1 was underwater. Had some hilarious moments searching for number 12 at 3am, when everyone started to go very hysterical and giggly at the fact it was pitch black and we were searching for a hidden piece of cardboard with the clue 'between a rock and a cowpat'.

Rogaining 5:35:00 [2] 15.0 km (22:20 / km) +500m 19:09 / km

Twalk Leg 5
This leg was all over the place for us. Started out at 4.30am so it was still dark, and couldn't find the first control. Carried on and got 2, then spent ages trudging through freezing swamp water but never found 3. Luckily by then it was starting to get lighter, so we trudged up the hill towards 4/5, got some spectacular views of the sunrise halfway up Purple Mountain. Managed to find 4 but not 5, before we decided it was time to head back down. As we were coming down, a team told us they'd found 1 and 3 really easy in the daylight, so we headed back to the swamp to find 3, and sure enough there was a blindingly obvious pole right where the control was. At this point we had 2 hours left, so decided to walk/jog along the road to 11 and hope we had enough time to climb back up to 1 again at the end. Got to the junction with 40mins remaining, so decided it was do-able and found it almost instantly, exactly where we'd been searching in the dark.

Finished in 6th place which we were all pretty stoked with, 8 points behind the winners. The two uni teams we'd been having a rivalry with for most of the race ended up just sneaking in front of us with 1 and 3 more points.

Twalk Leg 1
Enjoyed this leg, ran for the first half of it then walked the rest. Found all the controls fairly quickly, apart from number 12 which was hidden amongst all the matagouri. Selena and I got our map-reading skills shown up a couple of times by our teammates....I'm soo terrible at reading topo maps!!
2 PM

Rogaining 5:08:18 [2] 17.77 km (17:21 / km) +1017m 13:29 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon Orange

Twalk Leg 2
Started out okay, although spent 30mins looking for 2 without finding it. Then The Gypsies caught us up and we stuck with them and Eddie's team from 5 through to 12...mostly cos we realised how important it was to stick with Chris to find the controls! He has some kinda crazy nack for knowing exactly which rock to look under, no idea how! Got really frustrated at times with the searching and clues though. Couldn't find 9, 11 (clue: needle in a haystack...) or 12. Reached the top of the mountain just as it got dark and the rain started, which made conditions very freezing and unpleasant, so we didn't hang round at 12 for long. But managed to find 13-16 in the dark so that made us all a bit more cheerful.
7 PM

Note

Too tired and annoyed at hunting for controls, so didn't go out on leg 3. Ate copious amounts of freshly made muffins to cheer me up instead. Bit disappointed now cos everyone came back saying it was the best stage and the controls were actually findable!!

Bit of jogging round before Simon finished, but had no idea how long he'd be so didn't want to stray too far away.

Running race 1:09:17 [4] 12.89 km (5:22 / km) +390m 4:40 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon Orange

CRAZYMAN - 1st Multisport Team (26 seconds off the mixed team record!!)

In a team with 2 NZ reps, Kurtis and Simon. Kurtis had a cracking kayak and came in 1 sec off the record in 1st place, just in front of 2 individuals. Then waited round for ages and ages for Simon to come in, as heaps of people he normally beats kept finishing. So we knew something hadn't gone right. Turns out he'd blacked out twice on the course and woke up on the ground not knowing what had happened. So got carted off in an ambulance after I'd started.

My race went really well. Got into a good pace with one of the duathlon guys on the first uphill/downhill. Then he faded really badly and I pushed away from him up the 2nd hill. Mum, dad and Granny were at the top, so got some good encouragement from them. Power-walked quickly up the possum track on the 3rd hill and passed a couple more guys, then was all downhill after that. Dropping down into Baked Beans creek, got distracted by a lady asking if it was the right route and grabbed onto an Ongaonga bush. So my hand was stinging for the rest of the run. Swelled up a fair bit too cos my watch had imprinted onto my wrist.

Looked at my watch at the Baked Beans/Mill Stream junction and had 25mins to do the final 6km to break the record. So was absolutely gunning it for the final 6km to the finish! Managed to break the record by 44 seconds!!! Stoked!!! :D :D

Shortened 10mins tempo along the riverbank by Fraser Park. Quite a bit quicker than intended, but felt really comfortable.
Don't know what's up with the graph, but splits are alright. Probably cos I changed it to stop auto-lapping partway through the warm up.
