Note

Didn't get any sleep last night as the pub below the hostel was pumping out music until 2am then had to get up at 4.30am to catch my flight. Literally like trying to sleep in a nightclub. As a result, I wasn't really in a great state for racing.

Good start but running too fast and lost time on a couple of controls (5, 6, 10). Definitely started too fast, especially with it being 30 degrees and was suffering a lot in the second half. But the biggest mistake of all was to the last control when I lost 30secs as I ran to the end of the building for the alleyway, but they had actually opened up a door in the building to pass through. Would have been pretty happy with the time behind the winner otherwise.

ASOM Race 2 Chasing Start - Kortrijk
7th (+7th race time)

Started 3secs behind Anna with quite a gap ahead and a group 15sec behind. Settled in behind Anna for the first couple then got ahead at 3. Could see Galina and Megan ahead for quite a while and seemed like they were getting closer but after 12 they ran a lot faster and got a long way ahead. Hard to keep pushing to the end with no one close in front or behind.

Easy round the Meadows. Very hot today, felt really dizzy/wobbly for half the run. Legs felt very uncoordinated. It was a struggle to run in a straight line at times.

Also saw a lady trying to walk her cat on a leash which was quite amusing.

Absolutely stunning day for a run in the Ochils, not a cloud in the sky!

Ran from Alva Glen along to Tillicoultry, then climbed up The Law, Ben Cleuch and across to Ben Ever before dropping back down to Alva. Legs pretty tired after yesterday but it was worth it for the views and the run along the top.

Followed by a nice ice bath in the stream at the end.

ESOC Sprint Prologue from a few months ago - Uphall/Broxburn

Ran the first 13 controls hard then jogged the rest as I wanted it to be similar length to a qualification race. Couple of tricky route choices, got the one to 2 wrong. But besides that was just fast and furious. Suffering from 10 onwards.

ESOC Sprint Final - Uphall/Broxburn

Couples of hours off to try replicate WOC qual/final. Legs feeling pretty tired before even starting

Course was pretty boring tbh, no route choice at all besides number 7. No issues other than leaving number 7 when I tried to go through a small gap in the trees at the same time Jonny was coming through the other direction. Managed to get my foot caught in a hidden wire and fall straight onto my face down a small bank. Lay on the ground in pain/shock for about 1min then carried on. Bit shaky for a couple of controls after this then got back into it. Legs really suffering on all the straight road routes.

No sleep at all as I watched the first leg of Jukola from the house, then had to leave to the arena at 2am as nobody was coming back to the accommodation afterwards. Super exciting watching though.

Followed by a nice swim in a lake on the way to the airport then slept most of the flight home. Flying back with lots of other Edinburgh people but the customs lines were horrendously long for non-europeans so by the time I made it through, everyone had left. Didn't get home till 10pm so it was a very long day.

RR Jukola test race - Rahametsä

Did not enjoy this at all. Forest was so grotty in the first section with lots of new thinning, sticks and rocks everywhere.

Got 10m off the track on the way to the first control and found myself lost already. Eventually made it through to the ride and followed it up the spur and round the top to 1. Okay but slow to 2, then lost more time at 3 standing round in another depression just outside the control circle. Saw Meg coming into it as I left so was annoyed that I'd already been caught 3mins which didn't help my mood. Took a stupid route to 5, ending up doing a big zigzag then coming off the open depression at the wrong angle and ending up too far left of the control. Very grumpy at everything by this point!

Finally got myself together from the 6th control onwards and did some good orienteering from there to the finish. Struggling physically by the end, but that is to be expected after 2 terrain runs yesterday.

Turns out everyone else had found it tough out there and all 4 of us actually ended up within 1.5mins of each other!

This was my favourite map of the weekend. Much nicer underfoot, with some of the flat areas being absolutely rapid. Depressions were also much larger which made the navigation easier.

Tried to run this faster than this morning. After 2 big compass errors on the the first 2 controls, I settled into a nice rhythm and was picking up features nicely.
