Started out as normal for first 5 controls, then took the rest at a steady cruise. Very easy courses with no traps so could basically pick any route. Legs felt absolutely rubbish throughout...not sure if it was from the travelling or I was focusing on them as I wasn't racing hard.

British Sprint Champs Final - Campbell Park
1st (unofficially)

Really enjoyed this, courses were really fun especially the first few through all the hedges and paths. Couple of hesitations on 2, 4 and 9 where I missed seeing paths and had to turn back. Caught sight of Beth, Laura Goy and Charlotte going into the last loop in the open so that helped to push hard for the last part. Still bailed out of climbing the hill to the final control though, which lost me some time.

Highland Wolf Long - Inshriach
1st

Have heard so much about this map so was very excited to finally get to race on it. Plan was not to race but use it as good training, but ended up feeling better and better as the course went on so kept pushing hard the whole way.
Big mistake on 2, not reading the contours properly and not used to 1:15000. Then James Ackland (started 1min in front) appeared again at 8. He was running a bit faster than me, but kept taking bad routes and making mistakes so I kept catching back up from 8-17. Caught Klara, Marketa and Jenny at 15 which was great as it re-motivated me to push hard to the finish.
Managed to get away from them all at 18. then made a classic error on the last control in the forest by spotting a control on a hill, sprinting across to it, only to realise it was the wrong number (+1min oops!).

Really enjoyed this. Was nice to be able to finish a 2nd long course this year and actually be feeling strong to the finish. The intricate contour area in the south was really fun and felt like I was navigating well in this part.
Finding it amusing that I enjoyed/ran better in the 2 forest races this weekend rather than the sprint. Beginning to get my forest mojo back again :D

Highland Wolf Mass Start Middle - Auchernack & Balliefurth
1st

Awesome little area with very open grassy forest and lots of depressions. Started off slowly hitting 1st control in 3rd behind Klara and Marketa. Had a better route than them around the green to 2 so got ahead, then took the path route to 3 and managed to get quite a big gap on everybody else (helped by the people going straight missing the control). From here on, it was just a matter of trying to keep in control of my navigation and hold everyone off.

Lost a bit of time on 9 misreading it as a re-entrant not a spur so stopped too early. Didn't see anyone behind me until 12 when I spotted Klara, Marketa and Sarah a lot closer than I thought. Really starting to struggle in the last loop and trying so hard not to walk. But I didn't fancy a sprint finish if the other 3 caught me so tried to keep pushing on. Ended up winning by 1 min so very pleased with that :)

Highland Wolf Sprint - Aviemore

I was one of the first starters so think I had about 2 hours between races. As a result, my stomach felt horrid from lunch and was just generally feeling a bit rubbish/headachy from the heat/dehydration. Navigation was mostly fine but just felt terrible running. Bit sloppy to 3 and should have stayed fully right to 8. Felt like I was barely managing a jog round the second half of the course so surprised to win by so much.

Probably a combination of just getting off my bike and tired legs from the week. Eskimo at the top cheered me up though and felt much happier on the downhill. Hip getting quite sore by the end.

Absolutely torrential rain and stomach cramps all afternoon meant a fast time wasn't really on. Still, 14secs slower than my pb set after WOC 2015 when I was at my fittest so not too bad.

SHI Relay - Castle Saunderson

Ran 1st leg in a team with Jenny and Jess. I had a short first split, gapped all the girls then got caught up amongst the boys race and got dragged along with them until #5 as they kept running past me, going to an extra control then running back past again. Started to slow down from #6 partly to be safe with the lead I'd built up, but mainly cos I was really suffering from running so fast at the beginning. Messed up 9 (dodgy map/control placement) as well as 11 (just before spectator control, oxygen debt, couldn't find a path) then just safe round the last loop to hand over with around 2mins lead.

Jenny ran well to hand over to Jess 20secs down on Tessa. Then Jess pushed hard to catch Tess but unfortunately lost some time on 2 controls and ended up finishing about the same time behind. Super happy with 2nd place though against a stacked England team.

SHI Individual - Florence Court

My first long distance in 1 year. Was very tough open moorland that was very marshy and full of holes meaning that I spent a lot of time falling over and both feet were hurting from about halfway.

Started out well to first 2 controls thanks to a nice track leg, caught up to Niamh on the climb up to 3 but got confused on the very flat, broken ground area trying to find the control. Bailed to the track to 6, which probably wasn't the best route but I needed to get out of terrain for a bit and just run. Chasing James and Tom to 8 then started struggling on the long leg up to 9 into a headwind. Last few controls to the finish were all pretty easy but really annoyed to see 12, think it wasn't my control and continue running to another clearing. Before realising it was actually mine and having to trudge back up the hill.

Happy to have survived a long distance in very tough terrain. And very pleased with the result on my Scotland debut ;)

Really happy with this session. Was tough, tried to bail after 5 but Jonny made me do the last one :) Times much better than I was aiming for.
