For this final-day Mikell-designed middle distance course on the Granite Planite map, I suggested doing a race simulation to the few more competitive people around. Everyone agreed, so we had a start list with two-minute intervals, which certainly added to the racing feel.
The start list (in reverse order of perceived speed) was Siri, Chris Gross, Tyra, myself, Joseph Bellier, Tyler Kjorstad, Will. I started well and with good speed, and had sight of Siri and Tyra climbing to 5 as I was leaving 4. I was with them for the section from 6-10. Both were running and orienteering well, and I struggled to get away. I finally put on a burst of speed downhill to 12 and caught a glimpse of Chris leaving 13. At this point my racing-induced adrenaline boost wore off, and I slowed down significantly. I apparently got ahead of Chris at 14, but was unsure of that, and kept pushing hard.
I had small bobbles on 17 and 20, but was clean otherwise, and just held off Chris in a slo-mo sprint to the finish for the bragging rights of first finisher. Will ran 32, Joseph 36.
