Orienteering race 34:45 [4] 5.2 km (6:41 / km)

For this final-day Mikell-designed middle distance course on the Granite Planite map, I suggested doing a race simulation to the few more competitive people around. Everyone agreed, so we had a start list with two-minute intervals, which certainly added to the racing feel.

The start list (in reverse order of perceived speed) was Siri, Chris Gross, Tyra, myself, Joseph Bellier, Tyler Kjorstad, Will. I started well and with good speed, and had sight of Siri and Tyra climbing to 5 as I was leaving 4. I was with them for the section from 6-10. Both were running and orienteering well, and I struggled to get away. I finally put on a burst of speed downhill to 12 and caught a glimpse of Chris leaving 13. At this point my racing-induced adrenaline boost wore off, and I slowed down significantly. I apparently got ahead of Chris at 14, but was unsure of that, and kept pushing hard.

I had small bobbles on 17 and 20, but was clean otherwise, and just held off Chris in a slo-mo sprint to the finish for the bragging rights of first finisher. Will ran 32, Joseph 36.

Orienteering 58:00 [3]

A course by Neal Barlow on the Antenna Hill map. I did controls 1-15 at an easy pace, which I think made this steep course that had some large areas of downed trees more enjoyable than trying to race. After the course we drove up to the Medicine Bow Peak / Mirror Lake trailhead for some spectacular views and a dip in the cold lake.

Orienteering 1:11:00 [3] 9.2 km (7:43 / km)

The "official" LROC/RMOC training on the Twin Boulders map. Really fun course by Mikell! I ran well for the first half, but melted down physically in the second half - just not in shape. Will crushed this in 57.

Orienteering 40:00 [3]

Putting out flags on the Superfly Marsh map. Really fun area! Another great day with excellent weather. Camping at Vedawuoo has been spectacular.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2]

Wyoming! We picked up some maps from Mikell and headed to Idontwannabe for an old course. Will and I put out a few flags, and Sarah, Alli, and Inara went out to find them. I then ran a bunch of the course, gasping for air on every uphill. The altitude here is no joke.
