Running 21:52 [2]

A short run in Rock Creek before hitting the road westward... Really happy (and very fortunate and privileged) to not be spending the summer in pandemic-DC.

Running 20:45 [2]

One last run in Virginia... We will miss this place. It has been an amazing way to spend the quarantine, especially for Inara. She had a great time with all the animals and the nature around us, and I feel like I got a lot of quality time with both her and Alli. Now, on to next adventures...

Orienteering 1:40:28 [3]

We drove down to Gray Owl road and the Huberman-Bromer residence for one last socialy-distant BOK event. Joseph set a blue course, which was much appreciated.

I went out first, but it was already in the low 80s and very humid when I started around 10. I made big mistakes on 2 and 3, losing about 4 and 3 minutes, respectively. We were told afterwards that this part of the map wasn't field-checked, so I feel less bad, but I still should have been better focused. I missed 5 as well, attacking into the circle and then panicking when I didn't see the flag.

I stopped at 5 and thought about what was going wrong. I decided that I was out of habit orienteering and running through terrain, and was spending too much time looking down at my feet. I spent the rest of the course forcing myself to look up and ahead, and things went better.

The Rock Garden section at 1:4000 was delightful, as always. I was pretty spent after that, and the steep climb, then drop, then climb at the end of the course were pretty brutal.

I then played with Inara and hung out while Alli was out. When Alli got back, Inara announced she wanted to go orienteering, so of course we went, collecting a couple of handfuls of chanterelles in the process. Inara's course was retroactively defined by Joseph and Ruth as whatever controls Inara found. Really grateful to them and to BOK for putting on these events! They have been a wonderful highlight of these last few months. I hope to be back at Gray Owl Road for a national event at some point in the future.
