Orienteering race 1:01:48 [4] 8.5 km (7:16 / km)
QOC Local Event at Great Falls MD
My parents were in town, so I tried to take my dad, Inara, and Barney around the beginner course. However, the climb up to the start was too rocky and steep for my dad, so we had to abandon that plan. Instead, we walked along the C&O canal and went to the Great Falls overlooks. I ran into friends from high school and, when we came back to the event, my dad ran into an old orienteering friend from Russia.
Once Alli was done with her course I went out on the "advanced" course. I tried pushing hard from the start and forgot to look at the map. I blew about 2 minutes total on the first four controls before settling into a speed I could orienteer at. Then coughed up another minute or so on 21 and ended up about 4 minutes behind Kenny, who was consistently faster than me and also made fewer mistakes. Still, I felt stronger physically than I have since starting to run again, so seems like a step in the right direction.
Also, this was probably the most fun course I have run at GF. Great job by Sam Listwak and company!
