QOC local event at Great Falls, MD.

Once again this park made it more difficult for us to orienteer here, by limiting the club to three courses, "requiring" us to run in straight lines or on trails, and restricting us to a small set of control locations. Still, the woods here are beautiful, so it is worth bending over backwards to keep being able to orienteer here.

I ran the intermediate course today. Despite the restrictions, Nadim did an excellent job with course design, and I enjoyed myself in the woods immensely. I had with me Poppy, who is a dog we were pet-sitting for the weekend. Alli took Barney with her when she went out on her course, so we each had a dog with us.

My race went fairly well. Following the pattern of recent outings, it took about 20-25 minutes for me to get tired and to start feeling soreness in my right groin and hip. That was accompanied by increased wobbliness in my navigation, and I ended up losing about a minute and a half on the last control. Otherwise, it went well, and I was pretty pleased to do 8:34 min/km with a dog and still in injury recover mode. I wonder if I'll ever run 7 minutes/km in this park again...

Alli did very well on the intermediate course, having a number of excellent splits and beating a whole lot of people.

It was good to see Pete Nelson (US WOC team member from Scotland '99) at the event. He and his family are living in the area now. Very cool.
