Orienteering 1:11 [5] 0.07 km (16:54 / km)

Prince William Forest junior camp: indoor ultra-sprint

We woke up on Sunday morning to howling winds and lack of electricity in the cabins. After much deliberation, we decided it was unsafe to send people out into the woods and postponed this morning's local event, thus effectively scrapping the relay. Later on it was decided to cancel orienteering for the day entirely, as it was simply unsafe in the woods.

We got a little bit of fun in anyway. I got everyone to draw their own map of the hall where we were all hanging out. Then I designed a course and had everyone copy it onto their map. After that people swapped maps so that no one ran with his or her own. Then Valerie and Tori made this super-awesome by pulling out the e-punch equipment and running SI for the event. I started people with 15 second intervals, and chaos ensued! Hannah dominated, winning the race by a whole 7 seconds over me and Kseniya. It was nice to salvage the day in at least this one small way.

Apparently when people were retrieving controls later, at least two controls were found with trees having fallen on top of them. So the decision to cancel the rest of the camp was absolutely the correct one.

After driving back to DC, I went for a run with Misha, Emma, Hannah, Erin, and Kseniya from home. We mostly ran around the zoo and a bit along Rock Creek.

Orienteering 55:00 [2] 6.0 km (9:10 / km)

Prince William Forest junior camp session 1: multi-technique exercise.

After explaining the exercise and sending off the juniors for training, I went and ran Thierry's exercise myself. It was really fun. It was a multi-part exercise. Corridor, then control pick, then compass, then contours-only. A really good exercise! I struggled in the corridor and had to move a couple of streamers in the control pick (the map is a little sketchy), but otherwise it was an excellent exercise. Really grateful to Thierry for designing it!

Prince William Forest junior camp. Exercise 2: Route Choice.

This exercise was designed by Johan H. Thank you Johan!!

I paired up with Kenny, who pre-planned both sets of routes, as I was busy explaining the exercise to all the juniors and getting people paired up. Kenny and I were pretty well-matched for speed, so it was really fun to compare routes. Most of the times they were pretty even, but on #4 Kenny kicked my butt by crossing the stream and the green and doing most of the leg on the trail instead of taking tons of climb on the direct route that I took.

Prince William Forest Camp session 3: night-O

This was a brutal night-O course set by Jon T, made even more brutal by the weather. It was snowing, and got to blizzardy conditions pretty early on, with visibility down to a couple of feet and driving snow in your face. I struggled at that point, and screwed up #1, hitting #2 first. Managed to get a grip on things after that, and orienteered steadily, if slowly. Very tired by the end ad very happy to have some leftovers from the potluck for dinner when I got back to camp.

What a great, tough day of training! It would not have been possible without Jon T's initiative, Florence Tan's masterful cooking, and Valerie's map printing, along with the many others who helped out during the weekend.

Note

Kenny made an awesome side-by-side of the videos from his and my headcams. Very cool, especially with all the head-to-head racing and a sprint finish. Video

Running 30:02 [2] 3.8 mi (7:54 / mi)
shoes: Yellow Mizunos 2014

Taking it easy for a couple of days, as I strained a muscle in my back/hip during stair jumping yesterday. Had an easy jog home from work.
