OO Cup Day 3

Middle distance, my friend! We had a short race in a small, technical area with lots of trails and depressions. It was hot and humid at the start, and I tried to stick to the shade as much as possible before starting.

The race went well - the best I've felt racing this year, I think. I am still not fit enough even for just a full middle distance race, but I am getting better. We had 21 controls for 3.7km, so this was mostly control picking, and I had to be careful with direction leaving controls and detail in the circle in order to keep good flow. I took a number of trail routes to simplify the attack, and that paid off. I made a couple of mistakes in the green in the middle of the course (30 and 15 seconds), but finished well and ended up 15th on the day, better than 29th and 22nd the first two days. I moved up to 19the overall from 24th.

OO Cup Day 2

This was a long course in relatively steep, rough terrain, with some parts of faster running in open pastures. More technical orienteering than yesterday, and I had a better day. No large mistakes, maybe 2.5 minutes total. Felt better physically, too. Ended up 22nd on the day, better than yesterday's 29th, and ahead of most of my rival group.

OO Cup - Day 1

Running M21E this time. OO Cup is a much bigger competition than Bubo Cup, and the Elite class has 42 people running this week. Today's terrain was very open and yellow, with lots of pasture running and a small section of technical terrain in the north of the map. To get to the arena, we had to hike up a 250 meter hillside to a beautiful alpine plateau - a very cool setting for a race on Velika Planina.

I think I was still in the mode of technical orienteering for much of this race and spent too much time reading the map and slowing down when I should have just run. I also made a huge mistake on a relatively simple control (#5), missing 3.5 minutes by refusing to climb down to where the control was and wandering aimlessly up above.

I ended up getting beaten by all of my self-declared rivals for the week: Tim and Neil from SN in England, ndobbs, Giacomo. Also, two of the three young Irish we are staying with destroyed me.

Running around a sprint course drawn by Johan Hamelius on a map of Pula in the south of the Istria peninsula in Croatia. We modified the course (original is at http://www.dxdeluxe.se/linnekartparmen/show_map.ph... ) to add a few legs through the old castle at the top of the city. Alli and I ran together, and Neil ran off by himself, going a bit faster. It was fun, though not as intense as yesterday's sprints. Such a nice way to see the city and run through the Roman ruins. Now - off to the OO Cup five days.

Sprint around the old town of Piran in Slovenia, on the very narrow stretch of Slovenian Adriatic coast. We ran this course: http://www.okrodhenkartor.se/show_map.php?user=sa&...

Neil and I mass started, and Alli ran off a couple of minutes ahead of us. Neil and I battled head to head for a while, trading boneheaded mistakes, until I got ahead on the last few tricky legs through the narrow cobblestone streets.

It was a really fun, intense sprint. We followed it with a walk through the old town and a quick swim in the Adriatic. Really fun!

Our second sprint of the day, post lunch. This one was in Croatia, in the town of Rovinj. Alli designed the course for us, and it was brutal! Lots of detailed map reading and a lot of running up and down the town's two hills. I chose good routes, but Neil was faster and got ahead on the last leg and the finish chute. Another great sprint and a super-fun way to see this picturesque Adriatic town.

Bubo Cup Day 5

Not the way I was looking to finish the week of trail-free orienteering. I started ok, getting through the first few technical controls without problems. Then, disaster struck. I fell into the trap of following a trail that was going in a slightly wrong direction and did not check carefully along the way where I was actually heading. I figured I would hit the road just above #7 and then run south to 5, avoiding climb and nastiness. Well, I hit the road and headed south, promptly finding myself well off the map. I turned around and ran all the way back along the road to the control, demoralized. It took me a few controls to get back to a good place, and I had a reasonably good section in the middle of the course until messing up 17 by overclimbing through rocky deadfall. That did me in, and I did not have much fight in me as Andrew went by me with three controls to go.

I ended up 5th on the day and 5th overall, while Andrew finished 3rd and Neil (who kicked my butt today) 6th.
