Bubo Cup Day 4

This was the fast day, with the terrain less rocky and more runnable than the other days. The course was set as a middle distance, and I was very excited to run it. Too excited, perhaps. I felt rushed the whole way and never let myself take the time to properly get the right direction out of the control or detail in the circle. The result was about 4-5 30 second mistakes, and then a bigger one of a minute near the end where the lack of trails and roads on the map really confused me (we had a road on the map that went along the edge of the map. I saw a road in the woods and thought that was the one on the map, but there was another one...)

Anyway, ended up three minutes behind Andrew for the day.

Bubo Cup Day 3

This was the toughest day so far, especially physically. Big climbs early in the course (some of these could have been avoided by routes that took advantage of trails, had we had those on the map), then some very rough and steep rocky terrain in the middle. I was pretty drained by the end. Ran well until back to back mistakes on 9 and 10, losing about a minute on each. Then another 45 seconds or so on 16, stuck in some brambles. Ended up 3rd on the day (my best placing so far), a whopping 11 minutes behind the winner, and just 11 seconds ahead of Andrew.

Bubo Cup Day 2

A better race today. Fewer mistakes, but seemed to have lost steam in the end of the course and lost almost two minutes to Andrew on the last five controls. Ended up 4th, 9 minutes behind the lead, and a minute behind Andrew.

Bubo Cup Day 1
Neil, Andrew, Bara, Martin, Alli, and I are in Grgar, Slovenia for the Bubo Cup (bubocup.com)! There is intricate karst terrain with lots of depressions everywhere in a beautiful mountainous setting. The competition has a laid-back feel to it, but everything is really professionally organized, complete with well-functioning live results and Matija greeting us cheerfully at the registration table!

Neil, Andrew, and I are racing M21Ultimate, the class which gets maps without trails for an extra challenge.

I started my race my screwing up #1 and losing two minutes. I was then cautious and slow on the next few legs, but gradually got more confident. I crossed quite a few trails, and sometimes used them when they were going in a useful direction, but was quite careful to keep contact with the contour detail along the way. I made another mistake on #15, getting stuck in the green and then overshooting the control. Probably could have saved three minutes there by following trails had they been on the map.

Ended up 5th in the class (of 12), a whopping 13 minutes behind the winner, and 3:40 behind Andrew (http://www.orienteeringonline.net/Results.aspx?Com...). Hope to improve in the next few days. This is fun!

Fail. Went out for one last run on NĂ¥sten, and ran out of energy after about half an hour. Struggled the rest of the way and cut the run short. Probably need to be eating better and not skipping breakfast. Got home to see that PG appears to have won Stage 3 of O-Ringen in H70! So cool and inspirational!!
