Note

The sprint WRE on Thursday gave me 913 points. This makes my last four WRE scores: 913, 912, 923, 913. Consistent, if mediocre.

Linné Turkey Camp - Day 5

Antalya O-Days Day 2 - Sprint

This sprint race was next to the beach in a flat open area with lots of paths and green bushes and controls everywhere. It was really fast and fun, with lots of tricky orienteering. I felt pretty good in the morning and was excited to race this WRE and felt at the finish like I had managed a solid race, with one brain fart leading to a 20-second mistake at the spectator control. However, looking at the results I quickly realized that I ran much slower compared to where I had expected to end up. I realize that I have not done much running speedwork this winter, but I did not expect to be quite this far behind. So, a lot of work to do if I am to get in racing shape by the time the spring season arrives in full force.

Linné Turkey Camp - Day 5

We braved the afternoon drizzle to get out to the ancient city of Side (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Side) and run around on its ruins, doing a sprint interval training. Everyone was hemming and hawing before the start, stiff and sore from the morning's racing, but once we got going, people were running hard and battling a stray dog most of the way. The dog was quite friendly and enthusiastic, going to most of the controls. The stray dogs here all had ear tags, making me think that they are taken care of and kept rabies-free. Anyway, the head-to-head racing was really fun, and each of us (Darren, Neil, Ross, Andrew, and I) was in the lead at one point.

After running the intervals we came back to look around the ruins with our new canine friend, who was very sad when we got in the bus to leave and chased after us as long as he managed.

Took the morning off from orienteering and went for a mid-morning jog with Neil to loosen up tired muscles instead. A nice run on the beach and some stretching afterwards.

Antalya O-Days Day 1 - Middle distance

The race was in really fast sand dune terrain with small hills and depressions, tons of indistinct paths, and blobs of green to navigate around. I was really excited for this race as a kick-off to the 2013 season. Right off the bat I overran number 1 (I came back to the same place twice later during the week and still don't really understand the contours there) and lost nearly 2 minutes trying to relocate. After that I got into the map much better and felt like I ran well for a long stretch. I lost more time being too hesitant to 17 (45 seconds) and another 20 try to get through the green to 20. But not even a perfect race would have brought me anywhere near the awesomeness that was Ross today: 20th place in a very strong elite field and quite a few impressive scalps. I hope and expect to see more of the same this year, perhaps even with the US' first men's WOC finalist since Brian May?

Linné Turkey Camp - Day 3

Contours-only line-O together with Ross on the hilliest map we've been on so far in the foothills above Antalya. Nice terrain with occasionally sketchy mapping. The tempo felt nice, and we did a good job of maintaining map contact most of the way. Very pleasant day in the sun after a rainy morning.

Linné Turkey Camp - Day 3

We hurried out of our hotel to this training in order to beat out the mob of 170 Norwegians coming in massive buses for "Camp Norway." The terrain consisted of a bunch of forested sand dunes with great runnability on the dunes except for occasional patches of prickly bushes. The low-lying areas between the green dunes were filled with water from the recent rains, and getting to some controls required wading in waist-deep water for pretty long stretches. I got around most of the course, but took a couple of shortcuts, as I wanted to be out for about 75 minutes. Feeling pretty tired when I got back. The throngs of Norwegians were heading into the woods as we were finishing up, so I am glad we managed to get out early.

Linné Turkey Camp - Day 2

Sprinting through the old part of Antalya - very cool. We did three sprints, starting in packs on forked courses. I thought it was a really nice training, and I spent most of the sprints battling Neil, Darren, and a not-full-strength Ross. Really nice to get some head-to-head orienteering practice at speed while running through a historic town center.

Some walking around Antalya and enjoying the sunshine and abundance of cats and dogs afterwards.

Linné Turkey Camp - Day 2

Relay training at the same "Teletubby Land" map as yesterday afternoon. I orienteered like a 12-year-old. Run hard, come to the wrong forking, curse, figure it out, run hard to catch up to people, come to the wrong forking, repeat. I was clearly running faster than I could manage to keep up with the map, and I paid for it, making mistakes on 6 of the first 9 controls and ending up dead last of the Linné crowd at that point. Finally got my head into the map after that and orienteered well the rest of the way, which is a good sign. Another good sign was that my speed seemed good today, though still far from where I hope it will be when the racing season starts.
We jogged the "bonus loop" with Ross, Darren, and Neil afterwards, watching the Swedish National Team battle it out.

Linné Turkey Camp - Day 1

After taking four days off while fighting off the cold that was inhabiting our apartment, I made it Turkey with Ross, Sam, Neil, Lisa, Lina, and the rest of our Linné group, as well as a massive contingent from the Swedish Team.
It's beautiful and sunny here, and our balcony overlooks the Mediterranean while giving us glimpses of snow-capped peaks in the distance. I am excited to orienteer again!

Took it easy today on a course consisting of four loops spanning two terrain types: a flat, featureless open forest where good compass work was important, and a slightly hillier part with lots of brashings and brambles, where picking good micro routes was the key. Some lying in the sunshine after the training. Nice.

Linné Turkey Camp - Day 1

Middle distance training in some wonderfully runnable terrain that was nonetheless challenging because of contour and rock detail. Really enjoyed it.
