Speedskating 5:02:19 [2] 80.5 km (3:45 / km) +100m 3:44 / km

Vikingarännet: ice skating race from Uppsala to Stockholm.

I did this together with Alli, who was fighting a nasty cold the last couple of days, but felt strong enough to get to the start line this morning and then proceeded to skate 80km at a speed matching our highest hopes before the race. It was tough going, with some sections of choppy ice and a stretch with pretty strong headwind, but we remained in good spirits and saved some energy by drafting off each other. We got a boost of energy when we met up with Cristina and Melissa at Sigtuna (after about 45km) and skated most of the rest of the way pretty close to them. The race also featured three land passages, the longest one about 2km (took us 21 minutes), and the other two about 350m each. It was great to come to the finish and be met by a wonderful support crew of Ross and Sam! I am really proud of Alli - she was strong and remained positive the whole way despite feeling pretty sick through out.

This was a great experience that I would highly recommend to anyone who is in Uppsala at the right time of year, and something I would happily do again. Here is a quick video from about the 30km mark: https://vimeo.com/59570275

Note

I think it's time for a new Garmin. What is the current one that everyone is using for orienteering? Is it the 610 or the 410 or something? Are these better than the 305 that I have?

T.rex training 30:00 [1]

Some strength before innebandy at lunchtime.

Innebandy 50:00 [3]

Very lethargic during innebandy today. Everyone in the apartment is getting sick, so I wonder if it's inevitable at this point. Would be a pity to miss Vikingarännet.

Cross-Training 1:20:00 intensity: (50:00 @1) + (30:00 @5)

Elliptical intervals with Alli while watching the mixed relay at the World Biathlon Champs. We did 9'-6'-3'-3'-2'-2'-1'-1'-1'-0.5'-0.5'-0.5'-0.5'. With 3 minutes rest after the long ones, 1 after the 3's and 2's, and 30 seconds the rest of the way. Good workout, and nice to stay indoors after a few days in the snow and ice.

Tour de Linné Stage 3: Night-O on North Lunsen

A very nice course designed by Sam for the snow conditions: some trail route choices, but still need for fine navigation in to the control in the heavy snow. Andrew and I drove up from Stockholm and made it just in time for the start. I had an ok run - feeling tired from yesterday, but for the most part remembering how to orienteer at night. Had trouble following trails a couple of times, especially in the end, when I was trying to get away from a speedy Lisa on the way to the last control. Also had a moment of panic when I fell and lost my map in a pile of snow. Had to get on my knees and dig until I found it.

Tour de Linné Stage 2: Tisdagsbana

I did the 13.9km tisdagsbana that contained a bonus "sprint prize" when passing the clubhouse after 5.9km. I ran hard from the start, pulling away from the chasing pack on the 13.9km course with Cat T on my shoulder. After the sprint prize, the pace got a bit more manageable, and we settled into a group led by Elisa, with Cat, me, and Annika following. The pace felt fine the whole way, but when Annika and Cat attacked in the end, I could not answer, and they put a gap of maybe 15 seconds on me at the finish. Still, this was a nice, hard effort, and I am satisfied with where my shape is right now, even though there is still quite a long way to go to where I'd like to be by Tiomila and the US WOC Trials.

Innebandy 5:00 [1]

Started doing rockgympa, but calf was very tight, and there are so many calf-heavy exercises that I decided to skip the rest and go home instead.

Tour de Linné Stage 1: Sprint at Rickomberga

My first time running hard outside in quite a while, and it felt good. I orienteered well, staying patient and taking good routes, until the very end, where I blew past the last control while trying to outsprint Mats Åberg.
