West Point A-Meet - Middle Distance

I had a nice early start before it got too hot, though it did mean leaving home at 6am to get there on time. I didn't feel like I had a good rhythm at the start of this race and always felt a little rushed in my navigation, but I managed to start without losing much time in the technical early section of the course. I took a rather conservative route to 1 to give myself time to get into the map, but probably should have gone straighter. Good after that and settled down a bit after 3, as features started appearing when I was expecting them. Went around to 6, which I think was a good route. Then stayed low and around to 8 also to get good running and avoid the steep cliffs on the line. Not sure if that was good or not, have to look at splits. Then lost my brain to 9. Climbing up the steep hill, I told myself to be careful after I crossed the ridge, as this is the oxygen-deprived state in which mistakes happen. Still, I ran along the line of cliffs and somehow convinced myself it was the lower line rather than the upper. Stopped eventually, figured it out and went back, climbing down to the control. Saw Daniel Griff there, who started 3 minutes before me, and whom I had passed earlier without knowing. We stayed together after that. He was stronger up the hill on the trail towards 12, but hesitated on the way down and I got a bit in front. Then stayed in front, taking a good line to 13 and going through the stone wall junction as my attack. Annoyed by the 1:25 lost at 9, but satisfied otherwise. Finished about a minute ahead of Wyatt and Ross. It seems a lot of people made big mistakes out there, and the heat could not have helped the late starters. Always nice to win an A-meet race - I think it's only the 5th time I've done that.

West Point A-Meet - Sprint

I had 5.5 hours between the races, so plenty of time to lie around in the sunshine. Very hard to get moving again and feel fast for the second race of the day, especially in the heat. I had a decent race technically, while feeling slow throughout. I took a bad route to 7 (should have gone straight), and bad approaches to 6 (too high) and 13 (zig-zagging). Good otherwise, maybe 20 seconds lost total. Ended up tied for 2nd with Eddie, miles behind a dominant Ross.

Note

Tried watching the tail end of the GPS tracking for today's Elitserien sprint in Norrköping that Daniel Hubmann and Simone Niggli dominated, but the tracking was way off. Here you can see why: http://omaps.worldofo.com/?id=23005&s3=1

Running 35:33 [2] 4.56 mi (7:48 / mi) +63m 7:29 / mi
shoes: Blue Asics 2009

Morning run to test the legs. Sore and creaky, but not too bad. Threw in some strides on the grass at East Rock. Everyone is falling apart in New Haven.... I am starting to think it is the water. Either that, or training with me.

Sore butt + too much work = forced rest day

Running 1:38:52 [2] 10.49 mi (9:25 / mi)
shoes: Blue Asics 2009

At West Rock alone after being abandoned by all the ladies. The New Haven Invalid Club seems to be growing...
Went along the Regicides trail on top of the ridge, then down the yellow trail and back along the bottom. Listened to a podcast of some Sherlock Holmes stories, then some Chekhov stories, and then This American Life, which was my first time listening to it. Interesting show, though I got the impression that the hosts were sitting behind the scenes, laughing at the unfortunate normal people and their misfortunes. Though maybe I am just a bit jaded.

Note

Does anyone out there (not located too far away from New Haven) have a campervan, small RV, or sleeper trailer (like a Teardrop) that they would be willing to rent to us from the middle of June to the middle of July?
We are thinking of driving out to our wedding in California and then doing some traveling out west (possibly hitting NAOC) before coming back East again. Any tips on a cheap way to do this that does not involve sleeping in our Honda Accord would be appreciated!

Note

Our first wedding present just came in the mail, and it looks like a big box of yum!!!! Can't wait to open it when Kat gets home!

Running 13:40 [2] 1.76 mi (7:45 / mi) +10m 7:37 / mi

Jogging over to the track to meet Becky and a couple of laps around the track for warm-up.

Running 42:11 intensity: (12:23 @1) + (16:58 @2) + (12:50 @5) 4.88 mi (8:39 / mi) +31m 8:29 / mi

Following the advice I got here after my 5km debacle last week, here is an attempt to ease into speedwork with some intervals. Decided to do 400's followed by a few 200's. According to Jack Daniels, my 400m interval pace should be 86. Really? That sounds slow. I tried running that, but obviously failed:

76
80
79
81
81
81
78
77

Had slightly over 1 minute rest between intervals, as I started with Becky each time. This felt ok, not too hard, so I decided to do the 200's as planned, just four of them:

32
32
33
32

Definitely glad to have Becky there for the workout. Way more fun with company!
I love looking at the GPS track and the speed graph for track workouts. Very amusing.

Orienteering is a dangerous sport, especially in the finish chute: http://www.opn.no/her%20gaar-hausken-paa-trynet-i-...

Running 1:09:46 [2] 7.96 mi (8:46 / mi) +106m 8:25 / mi

East Rock with Becky in the rain. We did two loops, running back to the laundromat for Becky to move her laundry to the dryer. Very impressive example of multi-tasking this was.

Skiing 1:59:06 [1] 28.87 km (4:08 / km)

Was thinking of going for a long run, but just didn't feel inspired, so I decided to finally test out the roller skis I borrowed from the Yale ski team. Managed to put on the roller ski pole tips on my skate poles, and I was off. Explored the Farmington Canal Trail and really liked it. The pavement was really smooth, and there were almost no people, especially once I got past the ghetto (where I got plenty of amusing comments, mostly positive ones). Went up past Sleeping Giant, almost to Brooksvale and then back. Felt very tired the last 15-20 minutes, but really enjoyed it. Will have to do more rollerskiing in the next few months.
