Easter 2010 - Day 2 - Classic

My legs felt a lot better than the day before, and this race went about as well as a classic could have gone for me on the small amount of training I have done. The terrain was fast and open with some hills, and the forest was often a pleasure to run through. The course setting was, once again, very good with no dead running time you often see in classics.

It took me some time to get into the map, and I was a bit shaky on 1 and 2, and very unsure to 4. Settled down after that and had a very good long leg to 7. Was picked up by Robbie and Evan Barr at 12 and stayed with them through 15. Made one more mistake at 19, not noticing the green patch, as it looked very different from what I expected. Felt ok coming through the spectator control, but getting tired quickly after that. Managed to keep it together through the finish - a pretty good classic race for me.
Julian again destroyed the field in 74 minutes, 6 ahead of 2nd place Simon.

Easter 2010 - Middle DIstance WRE

Absolutely miserable. I had nothing in the tank today and struggled to get around the course. Looking at my routes, I was actually orienteering pretty well in the first half and handled the first tricky section of low-visibility rock detail without any major disasters, but my bad shape caught up with me after I tried to stay with Robbie Preston on 10-11. I was obviously running out of my comfort zone and lost control on the way to 12. I ended up low and had to fight uphill through the dark green and up massive rocks. This cost me 5 (!!) minutes and took all the will to fight out of me. I really struggled the rest of the way and left more time at 16 - I was in the right place but had no confidence at all and assumed I was wrong. Feeling very embarrassed and frustrated when I finished. This was my worst-ever WRE, worse than the WOC qual in the Ukraine that featured an 11-minute mistake and the Portugal O-Meeting where I was puking before, during, and after the "race." I can honestly say that there were no positives to take away from this day.
Julian won in an amazing 35:33, nearly four minutes ahead of Shep, and 8 minutes ahead of Robbie in 4th place.

I should add that the course was great, with nice changes of pace between the difficult rock and the faster open stuff, and I would have loved to run this course when I was in better shape.

In the evening we went over to Jules' and Felicity's place fir a barbecue (amazingly, my first in Oz) and hung out with a large chunk of the Australian under-30 orienteering crowd. It was great to meet a bunch of orienteers whom I knew mainly through AP or Shep's stories and to see some old friends. A really nice atmosphere, and a great bunch of people. I'd love to see the US under-30 O-crowd to expand to this size - big enough to have strong competitive fields, but still small enough to feel like a family.

Easter Day 1
Sprint at the Australian Defense Academy
Interesting course - started with high speed racing through the fields, then we got thrown into a tricky section of buildings and passageways, then another few controls in the fields and then one final tricky section of buildings once our brains were fried. I had a good race and stayed in control most of the way. The biggest mistake I remember was about 10 seconds running past a staircase going to #20, but splits show that I lost a bunch of time on 13 too (~25 seconds). Need to wait till we get the maps back to figure out what happened.
Finished 15th, I think, which would fulfill some of my goals for the weekend. Julian killed the field with low 15's.
Map later.

Correction: finished 16th. See results at http://www.orienteering.asn.au/gfolder/2010%20AUS%...

Note

Some goals for Easter, so I have something to compare my results to:

1) Top half overall
2) Top 15 at least one day
3) >900 points for the WRE
4) <1 minute in mistakes for the sprint; <2 minutes for the middle; <5 minutes for the long

Let's see how realistic these are... It's going to be fun!

Sydney Summer Series #26 - Kissing Point
The last Summer Series of the year, and it was getting dark towards the end. The race was in Ryde, and most of the controls were in the streets, not my favorite. It was a pretty spread out course, with no chance for getting all the controls in time. I am thinking my route was suboptimal, though I have a hard time seeing something better. Ended up being 7 minutes late and getting 460 points, not very good. Still, a nice training as usual.

Running 42:00 intensity: (32:00 @2) + (10:00 @5) 9.0 km (4:40 / km)
shoes: Blue Asics 2009

Wanted to make it out to Balls Head to run a sprint course, but ran out of time. Instead, I did 1 minute intervals in Centennial Park just to get my legs moving a bit before the weekend.
