Orienteering 30:00 [1]

Training Camp in Spain 2008-'09 - Day 7
Went for another no-compass map hike with Kat on the sand dunes. This terrain is so wonderful - it's always tough to leave.

Orienteering 37:39 [3] *** 4.1 km (9:11 / km)

Training Camp in Spain 2008-'09 - Day 7
After the morning's training, we packed our stuff and drove to Yecla, where we ran a middle distance course. I gave Ross a two-minute head start and tried to catch him. After catching him at 3, we had a nice head-to-head race the rest of the way. He was definitely stronger than me, but I tried to be a bit more careful with my navigation, and it paid off.

Orienteering 40:00 [2] *** 3.33 km (12:00 / km)

Training Camp in Spain 2008-'09 - Day 7
After finishing the middle distance course, Ross and I did most of another course we had, in the cool old mine part of Yecla, with cliffs and depressions everywhere. A great conclusion to a great training camp. The trip was made way more fun by Ross and Sam being there, but of course it would have been even cooler if Kat and I weren't injured.

Training Camp in Spain 2008-'09 - Day 7
After sleeping in post New Year's celebrations (read: long game of spades that went late into the night, plus spying on Thierry staying next door), we went to La Muela and ran a course from a 2007 WRE there. I felt good physically most of the way and orienteered well, keeping up a solid pace through the whole course in hilly terrain. Good effort.

Training Camp in Spain 2008-'09 - Day 6
Drove to Sierra del Oro near Cieza. Wonderful, but very tough, terrain with lots of canyons and cliffs. I started pretty well, but sort of lost enthusiasm as butt pain increased with all the steep up and down climbing.

Orienteering 45:00 [1]

Training Camp in Spain 2008-'09 - Day 6
Went for a map hike with Kat in the afternoon on La Marina. Took away her compass, which made things pretty hard.

Spain Training Camp 2008-9 Day 5
A 100-control course on the contours-only version of Guardamar Norte+La Marina. I'd been very excited about doing this course and ended up really enjoying it. Started getting tired mentally and physically around #40, but picked up again and got going in a good rhythm on the way back. Great training.

Orienteering 40:00 [2] *** 4.5 km (8:53 / km)

Spain Training Camp 2008-9 Day 5
Night-O training with Ross. Went much better than our first night-O - orienteered well and had a number of spikes. Lots of fun!

Spain Training Camp 2008-9 Day 4
Started off my birthday with a long training on Coto Cuadros in Murcia. Did part of a 21.1km course - a bunch of long legs with route choice, a lot of running in stream beds and climbing up and down terraced hillsides.

Orienteering 33:22 [3] *** 4.6 km (7:15 / km)

Spain Training Camp 2008-9 Day 4
In the afternoon, we ran the JWOC Men's middle distance A final course from 2002. Most of the controls weren't there, making this pretty difficult. I am not sure I ever found #6, but ran ok otherwise.

Orienteering 30:00 [2] *** 3.0 km (10:00 / km)
4c shoes: 2007 model Falcons

Spain Training Camp 2008-9 Day 4
Followed the JWOC course by doing a corridor-O exercise. Struggled in the beginning and had to look on the entire map once to relocate. Focused better afterwards.
