DM-Stafett Uppland, H21.
Linné's 4th team: Henrik Göhl-Boris-Liutas Bilevicius.
Went out on the shorter 2nd leg in 9th place, with a couple of teams within reach and one more Linné team right behind. The terrain was really rocky underfoot, but with good visibility, the kind of thing where you often know where to go but have a hard time actually getting there. It was also really vague all over the place, making the orienteering harder than it looks from the map. I started well and caught Linné's 5th team (Mats Åberg) at #2 but was also caught by Micke, running for Linné 6. We stayed together for a while and picked up two more guys (Rånäs and Roslagen) coming into 3. All were running as a big pack to 5, and I picked a better line across the power line and took the lead. Saw a stone far ahead and ran right to it, thinking it was the stone just before the control. Sure enough, it was actually the stone just past the circle, and I ran right by the flag while everyone behind me stayed and punched. I was irritated, but kept myself from running like a madman to catch up, and it worked. Picked up the Rånäs guy at 8, had Micke with me on the way to 9, and collected the other two in the circle at 9, where they were milling about. Me and Micke took the lead to 10 and got away from the others a bit. On 11 and 12, I was right behind him the whole way - he wasn't running any faster than me, but was orienteering extremely smoothly, something I really need to work on, especially on such uneven ground where it's hard to get any flow. We missed 13 a bit, but I got there first and took the lead to 14, but didn't see Micke when I punched. The next leg, 15, looked scary, going through totally vague, bland terrain, and I decided to stay high and go through #2 on the way, which worked well. I was clean the rest of the way, and was surprised to see Micke already at the finish when I came in. Apparently, he had a much shorter forking.
I was very happy with my run - 7:16 min/km is a big improvement on my previous three efforts this week, and the navigation went a lot better too. The team ended up 5th after Liutas ran well on the last leg, which I think is my best DM-Stafett result so far.

Longish warm-up plus cool-down with Csaba.

Orienteering race 41:58 [4] *** 5.4 km (7:46 / km)

Medel-DM Uppland at Rånäs.
A better race than my previous two during this comeback, which is not saying a whole lot, but still an improvement. Felt like I was both running and orienteering better than I had been, but still made a 40 second mistake in the circle on 2, a couple of 20-second ones, and then a major brain-fart on 10, when I came to the right rock, but didn't see the flag, and ran up and down the trail for a minute and a half or so. Ok otherwise, with pretty good map contact most of the way. Ended up 20th out of 30, 10 minutes behind Jan's winning time, which is better than the 15 minutes back I was on Tuesday.

Running 23:00 [2] 3.83 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: 2007 VJ Falcons

From KG to the start and back from the finish.

Orienteering 45:00 [2] 4.7 km (9:34 / km)
shoes: 2007 VJ Falcons

Shadowing exercise with the club's juniors. I shadowed Hanna, the club's best hope for the future on the women's side. I ran behind her most of the legs and also led for a couple, always saying what I was thinking. Really good training, definitely forcing me to concentrate. Running with someone else was also nice in that it really showed me one side effect of my injury I hadn't noticed before: I have become a lot less aggressive through terrain, both in terms of diving into thick forest and in terms of jumping off things. Now that I know this, I'll have to focus on gradually getting the aggressiveness back.

Middle distance club champs on Nåsten. Despite this being the familiar Nåsten, Ulf managed to set a really good, technical course, with lots of hard navigation mixed with hard running, low visibility, and direction changes. I had a lot of fun orienteering today, and started reasonably well given my current shape, but then got excited about seeing Björn ahead of me (been a while since I caught anyone!) and stuffed up three controls in a row (:30, :50, :15) followed by completely blowing the long leg to 10 on probably the hardest piece of the map. I think I started reading to #12 partway through the leg and was very surprised when I actually hit 12 instead of 10. Then, frazzled by the mistake, I continued to make it worse, misreading the control feature and wasting more time in the circle. Altogether, 5 minutes lost! Still tried to race hard for the rest of the course, and had a couple of decent legs with good speed, but the result was pretty embarrassing. Still, I felt much better physically than I had on Sunday, so at least my shape isn't quite as awful as I had thought.
Result: 21st of 27, 15(!!!) minutes behind Jan.
