Orienteering 1:00:00 [4] 6.5 km (9:14 / km)
Sprints at the Attackpoint Cup. (times approximate)
Round 1: Mass start. Started out quickly, staying on the heels of Marc Lauenstein and company. Surprised to see J-J lead the way to #2 (he had an excellent race, coming in 3rd!). At 2, spent so long punching that i lost the lead pack and struck out on my own, taking a better line to the control, and being confused when i saw the leaders again. Went to where they came from, which was a mistake and took John F. with me. Found 4 before 3 and decided to take it easy the rest of the way, still somehow beating John to the finish. Ended up 10th.
Round 2: Boris (#10) vs. Misha (#7)
Misha made an excellent return to orienteering here and came in 7th in the mass start, winning a match-up with me. I ran my own race, more or less, losing Misha behind me after 2 controls and slowing down foolishly to an easy pace after that. Messed up the last control and punched it just before Misha, having to push very hard to the finish to stave off elimination.
Round 3: Mihai (#15) vs Boris (#10)
Mihai started out very fast, and i decided instantly to stick with him no matter what and try to win in the end. I did not pay too much attention to where we went except occasionally when we seemed lost. Instead, i spent a bunch of time memorizing the final leg so i could gain some time there. After much wandering around together, we hit the 2nd-to-last flag, Mihai just ahead of me, and I took off for the final point, spiked it and sprinted to the finish with Mihai finishing right behind me. Nice race!!
Semi-Final: Sergei (#11) vs. Boris (#10)
We were both tried and started slowly, hesitating quite a bit before punching 1 together. Split up going to 2, but kept each other in sight. Sergei ran straight, over several hills, and i went around trying to avoid climb. He punched just in front of me, and i blindly followed him to 3, reading ahead to 4 on the way. I took the lead to 4, and punched just ahead, taking off for 5. We both missed it left, but stuck together. Sergei was quick to figure out where we were and got to 5 just before me. He headed towards the road and i decided to follow, not wanting (perhaps stupidly) to risk crossing the marsh. After getting around the marsh on the road, Sergei cut into the woods, and i decided my only chance was to go around on the road, which did not gain any time for me... Great job Sergei!!
And thanks William for an awesome format and great courses!!
