Running 15:00 [2] 1.67 mi (8:59 / mi)

Warm-up for the middle distance. My back was hurting a lot this morning, and I was very worried before the race. It didn't help matters that i was the first starter.

Orienteering 29:36 [4] 3.85 km (7:41 / km) +190m 6:10 / km

WOC Middle Distance Qualifier - i wanted to have a solid, clean run and be the first finisher in my heat. I succeeded on bot counts, and had one of the better, cleaner races I've run all year. Maybe 1:00 of mistakes, running well the whole way, and reading ahead. The best time ins my heat was 23:46 by Troy DeHaas, and the time needed to make the final was 27:28. Even though i didn't make it, I was 25th of 38 in my heat and happy with my result. And even happier about Brian's performance!!

Orienteering 16:27 [5] 2.8 km (5:53 / km) +60m 5:18 / km

WOC Sprint race. WOW!!!!!! This is the most incredible orienteering experience i've ever had. The city streets were lined with crowds yelling in all different languages, chanting your name (running up the steps of the castle with a crowd yelling "boris! boris! boris!" was surreal), and giving you splits in russian, english, and even german. I was surprisingly not nervous, given that this was my first WOC race, and certainly my first race with massive crowds. I started well, but made a couple of mistakes towards the end and also became exahausted from the speed and the heat (37 degrees). Still, it was such a thrill to finish inside the full stadium with a roaring crowd yelling at you!
All in all, i think it was a successful race for me, and definitely something I can work to improve on. Watching Jamie Stevenson come in with his fantastic time was also pretty amazing - he was flying!
