Note

Grizzly Orienteering's second event was a success despite the 8-10 inches of snow on the ground and temperatures topping out at 20F today. Writeup, results, and maps: https://grizorienteering.wixsite.com/grizo/copy-of...

Orienteering 2:00:00 [1]

We got about 10 inches of snow last night. I headed out to Blue Mountain in the afternoon to hang flags. It was gorgeous and cold and snowy. I managed to get all the flags out, though it was slow going. I think the beginner courses will be fine, as a lot of the trails were already packed down by the time I got there. Any of the harder courses, however, will be a challenge. I am really curious how many people will actually show up.

Pretty cold by the end, but not unbearable. This is a beautiful area.

Cross-Training 50:00 [1]

Elliptical.

It looks like it will be -1F with 6-10 inches of snow on the ground at the start of Grizzly Orienteering's second event this Sunday. Montanans are tough - people are still registering for the event...

Warming up to get my legs moving

Orienteering 53:21 [3] 7.0 km (7:37 / km)

John Harbuck designed a course and put out streamers, so Will, Will's dad, Eric, and I headed out to Fishtrap in the morning. I really enjoyed the course, and it was nice to have streamers our there. Each of Will, Eric, and me took 53 minutes, with Eric the fastest by about 15 seconds.

Warming up for the Night-O with Will

Orienteering 17:12 [4]

I drove up to Spokane for EWOC's Night-O in Manito Park. The course was motala-style sprint, but without a mass start. It was fun to race around in the dark.

I ran up the steep way to the fire road on Mount Sentinel and then along the fire road towards Crazy Canyon, then back the same way. Beautiful fall afternoon!

Intervals on the stationary bike, with occasional interruptions to help Inara with her Russian lesson.

Note

The final outing of the weekend was on the new Mount Jumbo map, where I designed a course for Will. He ran the course while Alli, Inara, and I went for a hike. It's a pretty steep area, but I think we can use it for an event. So I'll call it a success.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2]

Today was the day! The first official/unofficial event of Grizzly Orienteering at Pattee Canyon. We had an amazing crew of helpers: Will helped hang flags; Tyra, Siri, and Caroline provided awesome beginner instruction; Ashley did a shift at the start; Darrell and MB did start and finish; Alden Wright of the Rocky Mountaineers helped with publicity; GSwede made the base map; and Alli coordinated the setup of the entire thing, helped make the event flyer, got all the snacks and Covid provisions, and made sure that everything ran smoothly.

I typically stress out when I am putting on events, but thanks to our awesome crew, I did not feel stressed at all during the day. We staggered arrival times to avoid any semblance of crowding, and it worked really well. We ended up with 22 beginners, 6 experienced orienteers, and 8 family members for a total of 36 orienteers. Very pleased.

We had no punching - we can think about adding that once we are more established and have less Covid. We did offer UsynligO as an option, and one of the beginners successfully used it!

A full update with maps and results coming soon.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2]

Missoula orienteering weekend!

In order to lure folks from Seattle, Spokane, and Bozeman, I promised several orienteering opportunities this weekend, including a new map for Will, bringing our total to three legit forest maps, one park map, and half a sprint map.

The first outing was at Blue Mountain. I went out and hung streamers for Alli and John Harbuck, and designed a different course for Will. I like Blue Mountain! This is easily my favorite area here so far.

Orienteering 40:00 [2]

Next on the menu was the night-O for the Bozeman crew and Will. This was on the Playfair Park map, right next to the house. This is a nice little park for some simple orienteering, and it works well for night-O. I have field-checked about a third of it to update the nice basemap that Gord made for me, but it obviously still needs work.

Tyra, Siri, Caroline, Ashley, and Will all did the whole course, managing to avoid collisions with the many deer roaming in the dark. None of the controls were stolen, so I was pleased.
