PT 1:00:00 [0]

I went back to PT today for the first time since the surgery and saw Robert, the same guy I was seeing before the surgery. I think he is really good.
These are the exercises I will start doing now:

Hiking 2:30:00 [1]

An excellent, 5-hour hike in the backcountry of Shenandoah National Park. We did the Overall Run / Beecher Ridge hike with Alli and Barnacle. Great hike with some nice woods and beautiful views. No bears were spotted. At the end, we came to a wonderful swimming hole complete with a natural water slide. Much needed on this hot day!

Running 15:00 [2]

Running!

I've officially been cleared to begin running, but that doesn't mean it feels good to run. Still, baby steps. I went for a run with Alli and Barney in Rock Creek on a nice evening. I limited myself for 15 minutes, and we hiked afterwards. Besides feeling slow, I also felt very weak and tight on the right side. I will start PT on Tuesday next week. Hopefully it will help.

Hiking 45:00 [1]

Hiking in Rock Creek after the fifteen minutes of running were up. I love having this park so close to our place. We had a nice walk, and Barney was having a blast, running around and exploring everything, and always coming back to us.

Hiking 2:00:00 [1]

A beautiful hike in China Camp State Park in San Rafael with Alli and my sister-in-law Nonna. We saw deer and families of wild turkeys.

That was an insane women's 10,000m final. 29:17??? Holy crap!!

Cross-Training 45:00 [3]

Elliptical at the gym at work during lunch hour. Upping the intensity a bit. My body is definitely not used to breathing hard.

Note

I am joining Barb Bryant, Alex Jospe, and Ian Smith in running for OUSA's Board of Directors.

My main goals for serving on the Board are (in no particular order at this point):
- increasing transparency of OUSA's activities and spending;

- improving the services provided to the clubs by OUSA, such as support with event organization, technology, and marketing;

- helping clubs grow youth orienteering activity on a regional basis, modeled after the success of ARK, WIOL, and Navigation Games;

- providing incentives for clubs to organize more national events, including by making technical expertise available to clubs that lack it;

- supporting the development of domestic mappers, event organizers, and course consultants by holding regional clinics and helping less experienced volunteers get expert help;

- strengthening OUSA's support for elite athletes at both the senior and junior levels, and increasing the focus on athlete development; and finally

- growth of the sport: analyze what methods of outreach to the non-orienteering community have been most effective (beginner-only events, REI clinics, trail races with shortcuts, social media outreach, etc.), provide resources to the clubs to be able to carry out that type of outreach, and pay a dedicated, part-time person whose only responsibilities are marketing and grant-writing.

Feedback welcome.

Cross-Training 1:00:00 [1]

I love going to the gym during the Olympics. I watched half a table tennis match, a set of volleyball, and even a judo match.

Event: Calleva Race

Hiking 3:00:00 [1] 7.5 mi (24:00 / mi) +400m 20:35 / mi

A hike at Sugarloaf Mountain with Alli, Barney, and Alli's dad and his girlfriend MB. Beautiful day, beautiful hike. This area is really pretty and diverse in terms of habitats and vegetation. I think it would be a great orienteering area. Does anyone know why we don't have a map here? Is it an off-trail use issue?

It was pretty!

The only bad thing about the hike is that by the end of it, Barney's paws had worn pretty raw, and today he is very sad and hobbling around.

Orienteering 26:03 [2] 3.5 km (7:27 / km)

I orienteered again! After doing some beginner instruction at QOC's beginner event at Wheaton Regional Park, I set out for the yellow course. I surpassed last week's record of running 15 minutes in a row and, in general, felt better this time around. Once again, though, by the end my right side felt much weaker than my left, and the whole way I felt extremely out of shape. For future reference, Hannah ran this course in 22, schooling the boys.

Hiking 3:00:00 [1]

Alli, Barney, and I drove out to do the Raven Rocks hike along the Appalachian Trail. It was a nice, cool day for once, and we really enjoyed the hike, especially the views from our lunch spot at the Rocks.

Note

Unrelated to orienteering, but one of the cooler news stories I've read in months: http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/state-and-regio...

Cross-Training 1:10:00 [1]

A "long" session on the recumbent bike. No pain, felt pretty good. I'd love to translate this feeling into running sometime soon.
