Orienteering 46:57 [2] 6.01 km (7:48 / km) +75m 7:21 / km

Running around a sprint course drawn by Johan Hamelius on a map of Pula in the south of the Istria peninsula in Croatia. We modified the course (original is at http://www.dxdeluxe.se/linnekartparmen/show_map.ph... ) to add a few legs through the old castle at the top of the city. Alli and I ran together, and Neil ran off by himself, going a bit faster. It was fun, though not as intense as yesterday's sprints. Such a nice way to see the city and run through the Roman ruins. Now - off to the OO Cup five days.

Sprint around the old town of Piran in Slovenia, on the very narrow stretch of Slovenian Adriatic coast. We ran this course: http://www.okrodhenkartor.se/show_map.php?user=sa&...

Neil and I mass started, and Alli ran off a couple of minutes ahead of us. Neil and I battled head to head for a while, trading boneheaded mistakes, until I got ahead on the last few tricky legs through the narrow cobblestone streets.

It was a really fun, intense sprint. We followed it with a walk through the old town and a quick swim in the Adriatic. Really fun!

Our second sprint of the day, post lunch. This one was in Croatia, in the town of Rovinj. Alli designed the course for us, and it was brutal! Lots of detailed map reading and a lot of running up and down the town's two hills. I chose good routes, but Neil was faster and got ahead on the last leg and the finish chute. Another great sprint and a super-fun way to see this picturesque Adriatic town.

Bubo Cup Day 5

Not the way I was looking to finish the week of trail-free orienteering. I started ok, getting through the first few technical controls without problems. Then, disaster struck. I fell into the trap of following a trail that was going in a slightly wrong direction and did not check carefully along the way where I was actually heading. I figured I would hit the road just above #7 and then run south to 5, avoiding climb and nastiness. Well, I hit the road and headed south, promptly finding myself well off the map. I turned around and ran all the way back along the road to the control, demoralized. It took me a few controls to get back to a good place, and I had a reasonably good section in the middle of the course until messing up 17 by overclimbing through rocky deadfall. That did me in, and I did not have much fight in me as Andrew went by me with three controls to go.

I ended up 5th on the day and 5th overall, while Andrew finished 3rd and Neil (who kicked my butt today) 6th.

Bubo Cup Day 4

This was the fast day, with the terrain less rocky and more runnable than the other days. The course was set as a middle distance, and I was very excited to run it. Too excited, perhaps. I felt rushed the whole way and never let myself take the time to properly get the right direction out of the control or detail in the circle. The result was about 4-5 30 second mistakes, and then a bigger one of a minute near the end where the lack of trails and roads on the map really confused me (we had a road on the map that went along the edge of the map. I saw a road in the woods and thought that was the one on the map, but there was another one...)

Anyway, ended up three minutes behind Andrew for the day.

Bubo Cup Day 3

This was the toughest day so far, especially physically. Big climbs early in the course (some of these could have been avoided by routes that took advantage of trails, had we had those on the map), then some very rough and steep rocky terrain in the middle. I was pretty drained by the end. Ran well until back to back mistakes on 9 and 10, losing about a minute on each. Then another 45 seconds or so on 16, stuck in some brambles. Ended up 3rd on the day (my best placing so far), a whopping 11 minutes behind the winner, and just 11 seconds ahead of Andrew.

A better race today. Fewer mistakes, but seemed to have lost steam in the end of the course and lost almost two minutes to Andrew on the last five controls. Ended up 4th, 9 minutes behind the lead, and a minute behind Andrew.

Bubo Cup Day 1
Neil, Andrew, Bara, Martin, Alli, and I are in Grgar, Slovenia for the Bubo Cup (bubocup.com)! There is intricate karst terrain with lots of depressions everywhere in a beautiful mountainous setting. The competition has a laid-back feel to it, but everything is really professionally organized, complete with well-functioning live results and Matija greeting us cheerfully at the registration table!

Neil, Andrew, and I are racing M21Ultimate, the class which gets maps without trails for an extra challenge.

I started my race my screwing up #1 and losing two minutes. I was then cautious and slow on the next few legs, but gradually got more confident. I crossed quite a few trails, and sometimes used them when they were going in a useful direction, but was quite careful to keep contact with the contour detail along the way. I made another mistake on #15, getting stuck in the green and then overshooting the control. Probably could have saved three minutes there by following trails had they been on the map.

Ended up 5th in the class (of 12), a whopping 13 minutes behind the winner, and 3:40 behind Andrew (http://www.orienteeringonline.net/Results.aspx?Com...). Hope to improve in the next few days. This is fun!

Fail. Went out for one last run on Nåsten, and ran out of energy after about half an hour. Struggled the rest of the way and cut the run short. Probably need to be eating better and not skipping breakfast. Got home to see that PG appears to have won Stage 3 of O-Ringen in H70! So cool and inspirational!!

Back in Uppsala. Went orieteering with Ross on Nåsten. We ran an old course on a map we had lying around and conveniently had two copies of. We took turns leading, and chatted most of the way. Really, really pleasant run. It helped that we orienteered well the entire way, and that the company was great. I will miss this!!

Running with Erin!!!!! Alli and I stopped in for a visit with her, Kristoffer, Loki, and Sigi in Longmont before they make the big migration to Denmark.

Erin took me and Alli running in the foothills of the Rockies' front range, not far from her house. Alli did her own thing, and Erin and I ran together and tried to chat and catch up in the thin Rocky Mountain air. It was so much fun! We hadn't seen each other in waaay too long, and had tons to talk about. I wish we lived on at least the same continent so we could see each other a bit more often.

Hiking 45:00 [1]

A hike up Mt.Sanitas in Boulder with Alli, Erin, Kristoffer, Loki, and Sigi. I got to carry Sigi in a backpack part of the way up and all the way down! It was fun, and I managed not to drop him!! Really nice hike with gorgeous views of Boulder below us.

We got a WeGo Team Link (http://www.wegoteamlink.com/default.asp) courtesy of Eric! We took it out for a trial run tonight, me towing and Alli following. It was a cool experience, and we will definitely use it more in the future. I think we need to get used to it a bit first, but I think it will be a great way for us to run together more and for longer distances.

Blowing off some steam after the US-Belgium game by running intervals in the heat (91F when I started) at the Sentinel High School track in Missoula. I struggled through four 800's with 1:30 rest. I planned to run 2:50-2:52, that being my speed the last time I did this workout in Uppsala about a month ago, but secretly hoped to be faster.

Ended up with
2:50
2:50
2:50
2:51

Disappointed with my times - really hoping to get faster now that I've trained fairly consistently for two months. Need to stay patient...
