Skiing 1:20:00 [2]

Skiing at Winding Trails, first with Kat, then by myself.

Orienteering 37:00 [3] *** 3.6 km (10:17 / km)
spiked:15/19c shoes: VJ Supra

Bye-bye-O sprints set by Peter Grollmann at Stratton Brook State Park. Lots of snow everywhere, roughly knee-deep off trail. Ran the CH sprint first and was all over the place, taking stupid routes and running by controls. Got schooled by feet by 4 minutes. Then ran the US sprint, which was faster and easier, and didn't have any problems this time. Had a slightly faster time than feet, but he ran this one first, so it's hard to compare. Feet (and SnowClone) took the day's biggest victory, though, out-navigating Kat and me from Winding Trails to Stratton Brook on a daring, last-second maneouver.

Skiing 1:40:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (50:00 @2) + (30:00 @3)

Skiing at Winding Hills. First, gave feet an introduction to skating and skied around with him a bit. He showed some promise and will certainly be much better with less crappy rental equipment. Then did a loop with Kat, who skied better than I'd ever seen her do before. Then another skate loop by myself, pushing a bit harder.

Running 1:32:40 [2] 17.7 km (5:14 / km)
shoes: VJ Supra

Nice daylight run with Marie. Drove over to her place and managed not to get stuck in the snow (unlike the FedEx truck that we watched get stuck as we left for the run, and which was still there struggling to get out when we got back an hour and a half later"). We ran up the streets until the turn-off into West Rock. To our surprise, the road up was plowed, as was Baldwin Drive along the top - or rather, they were in the process of plowing it, so we ran as far as they had gotten and turned back and then did it again. It was really nice up on top - lots of snow, beautiful views and good running surface. Nice run.

Running 18:00 [2]

To/from the gym.

Soccer 1:45:00 [3]

Was actually at soccer for three hours, but not all of that was playing. Played pretty poorly tonight, which was disappointing, but I also seemed to get better as the evening went on and other people got tired.

Running 1:05:56 [3] 9.99 km (6:36 / km)
shoes: VJ Supra

Evening run with Marie at Maltby Lakes. Lots of snow everywhere, which made for tough going. Marie was a beast, though, and I struggled to keep up at times. Nice to have company, glad I got out there.

Skiing 56:23 intensity: (12:00 @2) + (44:23 @3)

Drove to Boston (1:45). Got Weston map and map holder from Alex and Ed. Went to Weston. Did the ski-O course from Sunday (awesome!! Really fun - and fairly challenging with a headlamp and no controls). Drove to Newton. Picked up Ed. Drove to Giovanni and Katia's house in Somerville (very slowly). Met with the CSU brain trust about the SML Champs. Drove to Ed and Alex's place. Bonded with Ian, Ross, and Ed. Drove back to New Haven (5:08).

Skiing 1:35:00 intensity: (1:05:00 @1) + (30:00 @2)

Another fine day of skiing at Fahnestock, this time skating. Went with Kat for an hour - she is getting better! Then some more by myself. Beautiful sunny day, great conditions!

Saturday Jan 22, 2011 #

Skiing 2:00:00 [2]

A nice classic ski at Fahnestock State Park on a beautiful day. Picked up Neil at White Plains on the way. He skated with my stuff, and I classiced. Virtually perfect conditions except for a few icy corners on the downhills.

Running 1:30:40 [2] 16.49 km (5:30 / km)
shoes: 2010 Asics

Morning long run in the snow with Neil. Ran to East Rock, mostly on roads, then up to the top and back down, racing a skier (she turned out to be a former Dartmouth XC skier). A bit more on trails and roads along the river and then back home. Made a few attempts at running on the trails in the woods, but the snow was deep with a crust on top, which is not fun at all.

Running 55:42 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (28:00 @2) + (12:42 @5) 10.13 km (5:30 / km)
shoes: Rob's shoes

Intervals on the indoor track at PWG. 3x1200m with 2:30 rest. Did them in
4:13
4:13
4:16,
which is nothing to be proud of, but still a big step up from my previous attempt at this session: http://www.attackpoint.org/viewlog.jsp/user_13/per...

T.rex training 10:00 [1]

Some core strength at the gym after intervals.

Running 1:00:58 [2] 11.09 km (5:30 / km)
shoes: 2010 Asics

Morning run in the freezing rain. Up Prospect, then to the top of East Rock on the road, then back down and home. Running mostly in the streets to avoid the worst of the ice. Slipped in a couple of places, but managed to not fall.

Tuesday Jan 18, 2011 #

Soccer 1:15:00 [3]

Had to hide indoors today because it was ice-storming outside and I was no Becky. Played soccer at PWG instead, and it was great. Really fun. Why don't I do this more often?
Trivia at the pub afterwards was great, and team Quiz on Your Face won 30$!

Running 53:58 [2] 9.81 km (5:30 / km)
shoes: 2010 Asics

Morning run around snowy East Rock in an attempt to become un-pissed off. Attempt mostly successful, I think. Really great view from the top of East Rock, but coming down Giant Steps was treacherous and slippery.

Mobile-O from the DeWitts' house at the WCOC winter meeting. I first guided Kat around her course and did not do a very good job. Was too vague in two places, and in the deep snow every little thing led to a time loss.
Kat, on the other hand, did a great job guiding me around my course, and we had no problems, except for the one time when the call was dropped, and I thought I'd have to find the last controls by random search.
A quick WCOC winter meeting followed, at which I was punished by being made vice-president once again.
And then the Jets destroyed the Pats. Yeah.

Skiing 2:00:00 intensity: (45:00 @2) + (1:15:00 @3)

Skiing at Winding Trails. Drove up with Mattias, Rob, Becky and Kat. Started skating with Mattias and felt really weak, just out of energy. Wasn't enjoying it too much, so switched to classic after a while and then just skied around easy and had more fun. A lot of people out there, but the snow was good and I was glad we got out there.

Note

Pissed off.

Running 1:02:43 [2] 6.97 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: 2010 Asics

The "Welcome back to the snow and cold" run with Becky. Probably wouldn't have gone out by myself, so thankful for the company.

Wednesday Jan 12, 2011 #

Running 33:04 [3] 4.0 mi (8:16 / mi)
shoes: 2010 Asics

On the treadmill at the Holiday Inn in San Jose. Started slowly and picked up the pace a bit every minute - makes for a less boring run.

T.rex training 10:00 [1]

Some circuits after the treadmill run.

Running 44:47 [2] 5.17 mi (8:39 / mi) +2m 8:39 / mi
shoes: 2010 Asics

Running from the Marriott Hotel by the beach around the resort premises. Got very hot and dehydrated very quickly and felt awful, but got a great excuse to take a break from the run when I came across a howler monkey troop lazing about in a tree. I sat down and watched the monkeys for a while and then staggered back to the hotel along the beach.

Running 1:32:54 [2] 11.13 mi (8:21 / mi) +303m 7:42 / mi
shoes: 2010 Asics

Icy and sunny on East Rock. Two laps of the perimeter. Felt good on the first one, but more sluggish on the second one. Good to get out after spending the morning quietly fuming.

Sunday Jan 2, 2011 #

Running 39:15 [2] 4.62 mi (8:30 / mi)
shoes: 2010 Asics

Wet and muddy at East Rock. Such a nice feeling running on bare ground after a few days of snow - felt quick and light, which is nice even if it's an illusion.

T.rex training 20:00 [1]

Circuits at home after the run: push-ups, crunches, dips, quad exercises, and plank.

Running 39:25 [2] 4.64 mi (8:30 / mi)

New Year's morning run with Sergei, Neil, and Kat (!!!). Beautiful sunshine, and a great day for a run. We did some loops in Verona Park and then ran back to Sergei and Kseniya's house. This was part of a great New Year's weekend with great friends, laser tag, orienteering, mafia, a fantastic meal by Kseniya, a massive snowball fight, champagne, charades (credit-default swap, anyone?), a movie, a run, and a whole day at the spa.
