Skiing 1:30:00 [1]

OK Linné Ski Camp in Orsa-Grönklitt - Day 3

Did some skating by myself and with Sofie, and then tried to look at Kat's technique skating and give her some tips. However, I think the skis and poles she had were just too big, and it seemed like a pretty miserable experience. I ended up towing her for a while, which was hard, especially on the uphills. Was actually out for 2.5 hours, but a lot of that was standing around.

OK Linné Ski Camp in Orsa-Grönklitt - Day 3

Classic skiing in the afternoon by myself after skiing down from the cabin with Alex. No lamp this time, just skied until it got dark, in time to get home to jump in the sauna, roll around in the snow, and then cook dinner. The entertainment went on late into the night, as we stayed up playing spades quite late.

OK Linné Ski Camp in Orsa-Grönklitt - Day 2

Went for a longer classic ski this morning, exploring the tracks towards Hällberg, and doing a few of the other road tracks, as well as the Stormon loop and the 6km track. Finished up by skiing back up to the cabin with Alex after her middle distance race.

OK Linné Ski Camp in Orsa-Grönklitt - Day 2

Skating with a headlamp in the afternoon. Night skiing is really, really fun. No one is around, the snow is fast, and you feel like you are flying around the tracks. Very tired on the way back up to the cabin, but really nice to sit in the sauna afterwards.

OK Linné Ski Camp in Orsa-Grönklitt - Day 1

After driving up in the morning and collecting our skis from Carl Fey and Natasha's cabin, I went for an easy ski on the 10km track, catching Kat towards the end. Did a couple of 5km loops as well. Perfect conditions - cold, but lots of snow and everything was well-groomed for Ski JWOC.

NC Sport Cup #2
This one was a night mass start race on good old Nåsten. The course featured a couple of long legs with a number of route choice options to spread the runners. I went right from the start, to avoid the logjam of runners at the fence crossing. I think it was a pretty good route, but I got confused leading a small pack into the circle and lost about a minute there. After a couple of controls the butt started really hurting, and the rest of the race was a struggle to stay focused and get myself home. The time wasn't too bad, given the circumstances, and this cold, wet, painful experience made me long for the coming weekend's ski camp.

Tisdagsbana F. Slightly more motivated to train tonight, so I got myself to the clubhouse and ran a short version of course F, mostly orienteering and running by myself at an easy pace (or the fastest I could go before the butt muscle hurt too much.)

Cross-Training 10:00 [2]

Erged for ten minutes before deciding I was really not into the gym session today, so went home.

Skiing 1:45:00 [1]

Skiing in Mora, towards the end of the Vasaloppet course, mostly with Kat and then a quicker loop by myself. A lot of fun. Kat is improving very quickly.
The evening session consisted of spectating the first ever Irish Ski-O Championships.

Skiing 1:30:00 [1]

Skiing in Falun, on the way up to Orsa with Neil, Kat, and acjospe, who is racing in the Ski-O Nordic Open Champs this week.
Snowing heavily combined with temperatures near zero made for tough conditions, but both Kat and Neil improved a lot during the ski.

Wednesday Night-O - Vedyxa/Skölsta
Went out first on the middle course and got to make tracks in the snow. Snowy and icy the entire way, but sort of fun. My butt hurt more than usual, and I kept losing focus on orienteering and sort of just trying to run - never a good strategy, especially at night. The result was a few big errors (#3,9) and a bunch of smaller mistakes and hesitations (#1,2,7,10). Not a very impressive performance, but still enjoyable.

Tour De Linné - Stage 2

The final stage of The Tour was a chase start on the backbana. We invalids "only" had to run one lap, while the real men had to do two. I dragged myself around the course in a time over three minutes slower than my PR, but I was happy to finish the tough week and win the recreational class. The day's most impressive performance was by loefaas, who broke the world record for two laps of backbana in the process of chasing down Tomas and getting the overall win.
Tour de Linné was an awesome, if very tough, experience, and I hope to get a chance to do it again, this time in the men's class, when I am not injured.

Tour De Linné - Stage 5

Stage 5 was the one I had most been looking forward to - middle distance on Tjäderleksbergen, the most technical part of Lunsen. It was about -10C and perfectly sunny, and I got to start last on the women/invalids course. It went great. Slow, of course, but very good technically. A couple of 15-second bobbles, but otherwise the controls were exactly where they were supposed to be. Results aren't up yet, but I think I have a nice, healthy lead before tomorrow's tough Tour conclusion on the backbana.

Skiing 1:00:00 [1]

After lunch, Kat and I took the club car and went to Storvreta to ski on some fake snow. I gave Kat a short lesson on classic technique, and she picked things up quickly. This was really fun, though my elbow started hurting towards the end.

Note

We now have a Catching Features version of some of the Team Trials map - Boggs Mountain. If anybody wants the file, email me or Kat.

Tour De Linné - Stage 4

This is the stage I've been dreading the most - a road race. The "recreational" class only had to run 6km, while the real men had 10. I ran hard, or at least as hard as the butt muscle let me. It was cold and somewhat snowy and slippery. Ended up 2nd, about 10 seconds behind Olle, and maintained my overall lead.

Tour De Linné - Stage 3

Stage 3 was a Wednesday night-O, run as a chase start with the leader going out first and everyone else behind, with some time formula that compressed the start field depth. The people who were more than 10 minutes back or didn't have a full result started 10 minutes back in a mass start.

Starting first in the men's recreational category with a 3 minutes lead, all I wanted to do was be very careful with my direction, stop if I needed to, take safe route choices, and just not blow it in the dark Lunsen forest. For most of the course, I managed just fine. Safe routes, good execution, one control after another, no one else in sight. When I got to the last control and saw the reflector, I was happy - the task was done, time to get to the finish and see how big my lead will be. So, run down to the trail, turn right and run to the parking lot. I ran down to the trail, turned right and ran. And ran and ran. When an unexpected trail crossing appeared instead of the parking lot, an alarm went off in my head. Starting to panic, I turned around and ran back along the trail I'd come on, thinking I turned the wrong way on the right trail. I ran. And ran and ran and ran. Then a huge stone appeared next to the trail and panic took over again. I plunged into the woods, hoping just to bash my way out to the big road. After running through some green swamps, I managed that and came out to the road. To add to my humiliation, I turned the wrong way on the road and took a few steps before finally turning the right way and running to the finish. This was about the most embarrassing mistake I've ever made, and it just goes to show that an orienteering race isn't over until you cross the finish line. I still managed to just barely keep my lead, but lost nearly 9 minutes and a whole lot of dignity on the 300 meter leg from the last control to the finish.

Tour De Linné - Stage 2

Today's stage was a normal Tisdagsbana of a simpler variety (mostly on trails and rides) run as a race, with a "sprint prize" somewhere in the middle. This was the hardest I've run in a long time, and my lack of fitness showed. I dragged myself into the finish after catching Anders Eriksson and Inga, leading them around for a while, and then watching them sprint away from me at the end. Still, this was enough to take the lead in the "men's recreational" category before tomorrow's night-O chase start. I get to start first.

Tour De Linné - Stage 1

The Tour started with a prologue, a night ultrasprint on Kung Björns Hög. I started awfully, losing 1:20 on the 3rd control, uselessly running around and trying to relocate off bushes. Made another big mistake at #7, and ran most of the rest of the way with Millinger, falling behind on the pure running bits and getting ahead when finding controls. In the "Men's recreational" category, in which I am competing, I was 4th, half a minute down on the lead, but really 1:30 down because of bonus time being subtracted from the winner. The best time on the course was posted by loefaas, an impressive 8:16.

NC Sport Cup #1, organized by IF Thor on Nåsten. Mass start race on a map with all the trails and roads and rides removed. The course started with a window of 5 controls you could take in any order. I took a less-than-optimal route through these and was already a minute behind after the window. Tried to run hard on the long leg and gradually closed on Andrew, with whom I was for a while until he ran off in some strange direction going to 11. Mostly by myself through the butterfly loops (where I made one two-minute mistake), then caught a pack coming into the last control, but could not get by any of them with my butt limiting my "finish sprint" to a sad little hopping motion.
It was really fun to orienteer though, and Nåsten seemed more fun without the trails on the map. Jan won in an impressive 57 minutes.

After the morning's training, we packed our stuff and drove to Yecla, where we ran a middle distance course. I gave Ross a two-minute head start and tried to catch him. After catching him at 3, we had a nice head-to-head race the rest of the way. He was definitely stronger than me, but I tried to be a bit more careful with my navigation, and it paid off.

After finishing the middle distance course, Ross and I did most of another course we had, in the cool old mine part of Yecla, with cliffs and depressions everywhere. A great conclusion to a great training camp. The trip was made way more fun by Ross and Sam being there, but of course it would have been even cooler if Kat and I weren't injured.

After sleeping in post New Year's celebrations (read: long game of spades that went late into the night, plus spying on Thierry staying next door), we went to La Muela and ran a course from a 2007 WRE there. I felt good physically most of the way and orienteered well, keeping up a solid pace through the whole course in hilly terrain. Good effort.
