Jogging to and from the start.

Orienteering race 27:26 [5] ** 4.7 km (5:50 / km)
spiked:17/21c shoes: 2007 model Falcons

OK Linné middle distance club champs on the brand-new map of Stadsskogen, extended north and west enough to include my house. I've finally realized my dream of living on an orienteering map! And i did it not by moving to a map, but waiting for the map to come to me. :)
But anyway, I am happy to report that there were no 11-minute mistakes this time, unlike my last middle distance outing. I did miss about 40 seconds on #1, enough for Crister Nygren, who started 1 minute behind me, to spot me leaving. We were together at 3 and race head-to-head for a while until I missed 15. The area around there was very strange, and I didn't quite understand all the trails even when I came back there during my job back home. Then got caught by Jonn Are, fresh off his awesome 6th place in the middle distance at WOC, on the long leg to 17, and we both navigated to #3, which was almost right on the line. That cost another 20-25 seconds or so. I finished 10th, 3:54 off Mats' winning time. Mostly satisfied with the race, especially physically. Incidentally, Jonn Are ended up 6th again.

Note

I've been in Uppsala long enough that I am now running a few of the same races three years in a row. So here is a result and percent-behind comparison for the club middle champs for the last three years (and yes, Stadsskogen is a much easier place than usual middle distance terrain, but still):

2005
Place: 11/16, Percent behind winner: 37.7%
2006
Place: 15/26, Percent behind winner: 25%
2007
Place: 10/31, Percent behind winner: 16.6%

I'll try to do comparisons like these for a couple more races this fall to see if there is a visible trend.

Orienteering 38:02 [3] *** 4.9 km (7:46 / km)
spiked:8/10c shoes: 2007 model Falcons

Back in the woods! Pre-ran one of the courses for this Friday's Night-DM in Hammarskog. About 11C and drizzling. Running in tights and a long-sleeve thermal top. Quite a change from Ukraine, but still nice to be out in the woods.

Running 50:05 [2] 6.26 mi (8:00 / mi)
shoes: 2007 model Falcons

Running back to KG from Hammarskog with Andrew, Patrick, and Tomas. Had a nice chat with Tomas about good and bad ways to approach important races mentally. The run itself felt nice too, the scenery was quite pretty as the clouds gradually disappeared, and we got to see a lovely Hågadalen at sunset.

Note

Back in Uppsala. Ukraine left me with one last parting gift of bad diarrhea. Mixed feelings about WOC and further motivation down the line. On one hand, I had two of my technically cleanest races at WOC, the sprint quali and the relay. On the other hand, I didn't feel good physically for either one of those. In the relay, in particular, I really struggled. I am happy with making the best of what I had on that day, but disappointed I did not have more. The middle quali debacle is a whole different story. I felt great physically, and felt like everything was set up in my favor. I had done plenty of training in that terrain (though, granted, not with so much low-visibility stuff), the weather was nice and cool, I had a good start time. The conditions seemed perfect. And then I simply imploded. A mistake on #1 rattled me, so I took a safe route to 2 and spiked it. Then got risky again to 3 and panicked when I didn't come to it immediately. What followed in the next 11 (!!!) minutes was like something out of a horrible dream. I'd relocate, attack, fail, see competitors run by, find the controls for the other quals, relocate, attack, fail, find the guy who was sitting on a hill watching all the controls, realize that he could SEE my control from where he was, attack again, fail again, eventually stumble onto a trail, finally relocate, and find the control. After punching it, I stopped. All this training, all this effort, completely wasted. Temptation to jog to the finish or to fabricate a story about losing my SI, being attacked by a dog, or something similar was high. Decided to continue the course anyway. Missed the next control by another 30 seconds, then slowly got myself together and picked up the pace. Ran well for most of the rest of the course, except missing the second-to-last after being stuck in nettles. Even ran hard in the finish chute (which actually paid off by letting me climb a place). After that, nothing. Last year, when I had a really bad middle quali, I was angry at myself but also knew that I wasn't ready yet. This time was different. I didn't feel angry, just empty. I was ready, and I blew it. Maybe it's putting too much pressure on myself, maybe it's trying to do too much, I don't know, but something obviously did not work. As usual, one needs to take some positives away, even from a catastrophe. With my eleven-minute mistake and another couple of minutes left out in the woods, I was 14 minutes away from qualifying. A clean run would have given me a shot, which had never been the case before. Neither last year in Denmark nor the year before in Japan would I have had a chance even with a clean run. But that's just the one little positive overshadowed by the enormous negative.
Self-confidence is low, but hey, I am back in Uppsala, racing season here is just heating up, and I love orienteering way too much to stay away. Time to sit down, figure out what went wrong, figure out what to do better, and return to work. I can't wait to get back into the woods.

Running 51:28 [2] 6.43 mi (8:00 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Trail Shoes

An evening jog with Andrew, who seems to be sort-of living here for the time being. Great to have company to live and train with! We ran a trail loop on the north part of Nåsten and back through Stadsskogen and both commented on how much easier it felt to run here than it did in Ukraine. I don't know if it was the heat, the pollution, or the dogs, but there was something off about that place.

Orienteering race 1:01:37 [4] *** 8.5 km (7:15 / km) +350m 6:01 / km
spiked:20/21c shoes: 2007 model Falcons

WOC Relay. Ran 2nd leg for team USA. Eric ran a solid first leg and handed over to me in 29th, just behind Canada, and just ahead of Germany. I ran fast to catch and pass Mike Smith coming into #1, as he missed it by a bit, and was back and forth with him and the German guy for a few controls. I then took a bad route choice to #7 and lost about a minute, as well as contact with the other guys. Leaving 8, I saw the Chinese and Japanese guys, who both started quite a bit ahead, coming into it, so I picked up speed a bit. Started feeling very tired and powerless in the steep, hilly section between 9 and 13, and just focused on being clean through there. Spotted the Moldavian going to the spectator control, but didn't really gain on him from there to the finish. All in all, a good race technically, but a tough day physically. The team finished 29th, a place worse than last year, but closer to the leaders percent-wise.

Relay model area. Ran a course that Tom designed for Eddie and me. Our courses were forked, and we started at the same time, but there wasn't much head-to-head running after the first control, as we went to our different forks and never saw each other again.

Running 43:30 [2] 5.12 mi (8:30 / mi)

Morning jog with a bunch of other US runners, on the north side of the Hydropark island. Nice, sandy trails, weird Communist-era building remains, and some nettles.

Orienteering race 44:36 [4] **** 6.1 km (7:19 / km)
spiked:14/17c shoes: 2007 model Falcons

Ran the WOC Tour after spectating the middle final. The course was the same as the men's final course for the last 5km or so. After chaos at the start (they didn't assign start times, so it was a free for all. I used my knowledge of Russian to convince the organizers to make people line up to get start times, and then graciously volunteered to form the line of people behind me, thus getting a coveted early start), I ran off, trying not to repeat my mistakes from the middle quali. Ran quite well this time, though still made two 1-minute mistakes, one in a very vague green area, and another towards the end, when I was tired and dehydrated. Still, quite happy with my time, and with getting back a bit of self-confidence before the relay.

WOC Middle Distance Qualifier.

I've already written enough about this race and have analyzed what went wrong over and over in my head, so I don't have much more to say. Just that I felt great and totally prepared at the start line. No excuses.

Running 25:00 [2] 2.94 mi (8:30 / mi)

Warm-up. Not surprisingly, there was no cool-down, just sitting in a field a while.

Running 30:00 [3] 3.75 km (8:00 / km)
shoes: 2007 VJ Falcons

Middle distance model event. Ran a few controls easy, a few others hard. Felt pretty good and orienteered fine. A piece of the model map had a big blob of green that was circled and labeled "example of vegetation for the middle quali." We all thought that was just going to be a bit of the map. Boy, were we wrong!

Warm-up for the WOC sprint qualifier.

Orienteering race 15:05 [5] * 2.9 km (5:12 / km)
spiked:11/12c shoes: 2007 model Falcons

WOC Sprint Qualifier, Heat A.
Not even close. On one hand, it looks bad. A year of hard training later, and I am further from qualifying (1:05 away versus 0:37) and further down in my heat (23rd versus 20th) than in Denmark. So I am disappointed with the result.
On the other hand, I didn't make more than maybe 15 seconds of mistakes, so there is not much more I could have expected from myself. This was also my best-ever world ranking score (1025 - first over a thousand!) and the best of all the North Americans yesterday. So there is some consolation in that.
The course was very fast, not particularly technical, and without much route choice. You just had to go hard from the start, which I am not sure I did well enough. Due to the heat, I felt pretty lethargic and felt like I had to fight myself every step of the race, Hearing the cheering from the crowd and the many familiar voices as I was passing through the spectacor control was really inspirational and motivating, that was probably one of the high points of the day.
But the real highlight was watching the countdown to make it official that Sandra made her first-ever WOC final, and shoving people out of the way to be the first one to hug and congratulate her, Seeing Marc cry as he came over to kiss her was almost way too disgustingly romantic for me, but really wonderful at the same time. It's so amazing seeing someone who you have known for years and whom you have seen work so hard and come so close finally reach the goal she so completely deserved!! I think that seeing moments like this is a lot of what doing orienteering is about for many of us who are in this sport.

Orienteering 30:00 [2] 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

WOC Sprint model event at Feofaniya. Not the most exciting of places - forested, with good visibility but pretty tall undergrowth and a good bit of nettles. Some steep, soft slopes too. Definitely different from the sprint in Denmark. If anything, reminds me of what the sprint in Japan was like. Also, much warmer here than even the warmest summer days in Uppsala have been. It might be quite tough to race at 3pm tomorrow. Otherwise, its nice being with the US team and just seeing orienteers throughoutour massive hotel. Everyone is here now. Time to race.

Orienteering 18:03 [4] 3.0 km (6:01 / km)
shoes: Saucony 2006

Last hard training before WOC. Ran a sprint course that Mats designed for us and Allison hanged on the Castle map. Felt pretty dead running and made a couple of mistakes, too. Not the best run for me, but I think three days will be enough to recover for the Sprint qual on Saturday.

Warm-up, cool-down, jogging between intervals.

Running 10:00 [5] 2.0 mi (5:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony 2006

"Form-topping" intervals on the horse loop in Stadsskogen. Did 4 x (90 sec on, 60 sec off, 45 sec on, 2 min off) and then 4 15-second sprints. Felt fast and light. I should get a massage every week if it makes one feel like this!! Only did four reps to avoid overdoing it. Ran itto Rob out there, as well as Christer Eriksson who was fieldchecking for the new Stadsskogen map. Got attacked by a dog and ran through a bunch of nettles. Seems like very Ukraine-relevant training.

Jogging from Sunnersta out to Lunsen and then back with Albin. Spent some time trying to get used to my new compass. It seems to work okay. Also hung out and took pictures of people running the Ultralong Club Champs out in the forest.

Running 15:00 [2] 1.76 mi (8:30 / mi)

Warm-up. Felt weird warming up - almost as if I were hung over.

Orienteering race 47:06 [4] *** 6.25 km (7:32 / km)
spiked:16/23c shoes: 2007 model Falcons

Tierpssprinten. My final tune-up race before WOC could not have gone worse. A parallel error on #1 took out 2:30, and it just got worse from there. The race went in fast, runnable, but rocky terrain, mainly consisting of a single long ridge, which the course crossed over about 8 times. A lot of controls were "drop down a bland hillside and try to hit a rock surrounded by lots of other rocks." Not the kind of thing I am apparently good at. I got some flow going in the middle of the course, which was immediately derailed by a massive miss on 12 -a pit in the middle of a featureless flat area. After a few minutes of running back and forth, I gave up on it, when someone came by and punched it, about 3 meters from where I was standing. Three more mistakes on the last part of the course, and the day was complete. A whopping 12 minutes behind the winning time.
Well, I suppose I need to take some positives away from this. The biggest positive is that running felt really easy today, and I felt strong on the hills. I also had a bunch of decent splits, including 9 top-10 splits. According to WinSplits, I had the 11th fastest "error-free time." So I suppose my form is ok, just need to get the brain to work.
Patrick had a nice race and kicked my butt by four minutes.

Warm-up/cool-down

Orienteering race 37:46 [4] ***** 4.8 km (7:52 / km)

Järladubbeln. This was a long distance competition, but I decided to do a middle-distance open course instead, since that seems a bit more relevant for the races I am doing in Ukraine. The terrain was fantastic, the map just fine, and the weather great. Rarely do you get all three on the same day! Plus, no body part hurt so much during the race that I had to think about it. Except maybe a part of my shoulder which got bitten by an angry ant during my warm-up. The race went ok, but not great. I didn't have great flow through the tough terrain (despite good visibility, it was tough to run - you really had to fight for every meter), and was sloppy in the circle. One big mistake - about 1 minutes, and 5 small ones (another 1:30 in total). Still, I am generally pleased with how it went.
Winsplits: http://85.89.72.58/winsplits/online/sv/default.asp...

Note

After the Järla race, we drove straight to Vattholma, a village north of Uppsala, for Vattholmaruset, a "fun" race organized by Henrik and Eva Göhl, whose moving-in party followed the race. I (wisely) decided not to race (the terrain was extremely rocky and thick, and the map was about 20 years old), but instead walked out to the first control and took pictures and then went swimming in the fine lake next to the finish. The moving-in party followed, complete with yummy grilling, a few games of kubb, and lots of Swedish. As usual, I managed to get into a conversation where no one around the table agreed with me. How does this always happen??
And I learned that, in Sweden, I wouldn't be allowed to paint my own house purple even if I wanted to!!! (And no, it's nothing personal against purple, it just that it isn't the mandatory Falu Red .) This reminded me a bit of Soviet Russia, where we all had to wear grey and put on same size shoes.
All in all, a great Swedish summer day!

A jog around Stadsskogen as soon the rain let up for a bit.
Had an appointment with a naprapath afterwards. He massaged and electrocuted the hamstring for a while and also cracked my back in a horribly painful, and yet pleasant, way. We'll see if it helps.

Training with Rob on the Kungshamn/Mora part of Lunsen. Hills and depressions, plus low visibility vague areas. Combined with two funny dog sightings (one dog refused to get out of a car despite its owners insistent pleading, and the other was being chided by its owner for eating too many rocks), this was perfect Ukraine training.
Will go see a naprapath about the hamstring tomorrow.

The second day of the training camp started with a Camp Championships. The night before we drew lots for the starting order and even video-taped the process to deflect all accusations of cheating and favoritism. Jonn Are started first, then me, then Annika, then Rob. I felt dead tired from the start and decided to just focus on the orienteering and not worry about the running. It was a pretty hard area to run in, with lots of blueberry and other crap on the ground - a lot tougher then I recall Ukraine being. Was nice and careful on the first three controls and was on my way to 4th, when I was surprised to hear someone running hard and gaining behind me. Turned out to be Jonn Are, who missed the first one. I tried to take a different route choice from him coming into 6, but got stuck in a hygge, and he was gone. Orienteered ok most of the rest of the way, though was really tired towards the end and blew over a minute on 16, I think. Rob ended up with the best time, 28 something. I was reasonably happy with my run, especially navigationally. Just gotta make sure to stay healthy before Ukraine.

Orienteering 31:55 [2] 3.99 km (8:00 / km)
shoes: 2007 VJ Falcons

After a "swim" in ankle-deep lake Siljan and lazing around on the beach for an hour so, we drove down to Leksand for our last training on the map where the Elitserien was back in May. Felt really low on energy in the beginning, barely moving. Got better as it went, though, but I still decided to cut the training short so as to not overdo it.
A great week-end of training and (mostly) sunshine, plus I got to hear some breathtaking stories from the world of Australian orienteering!

Orienteering 28:08 [4] 4.69 km (6:00 / km)

Mora training camp with Rob.
We drove up to Mora in the morning and met up with Annika Billstam and Jonn Are Myhren for some training. The first session was running orienteering loops at interval pace. I confirmed during the warm-up that the compass I bought at O-Ringen to replace the one I broke is a piece of crap, with the needle swinging pretty wildly even at an easy jog. I still tried using it for the first loop, but ended up running way off-line. Great. Went without a compass for the second loop, and this went a lot better. Did this on the third loop and was running well until going wildly off-course to the fourth control. Eventually figured out where I was and jogged back. Not the most satisfying training session.

Orienteering 8:27 [2] 0.85 mi (10:00 / mi)

To and from the start

Orienteering 43:27 [3] 7.24 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: 2007 VJ Falcons

Rob and I both felt dead after the morning training, so, after stumbling around Mora looking for a sandwich, we checked into our ghetto hostel and crashed for an hour or so. Felt pretty dead when we got out to train, but then the legs started working again, and the orienteering went well too. We ran on Bonäs, a really nice fast area with pretty high visibility most of the way. Ran a lot better on this session than in the morning, which cheered me up quite a bit.
The evening entertainment consisted of a walk around the happenin' downtown Mora with a bunch of drunk Swedes urinating all over the place, followed by a few games of pool. I am about as good as Rob!

A nice afternoon run on some trails on Nåsten with Rob, Shep, and Jo. Good run, good company. Two days of rest did me good - felt fresh, and the hamstring didn't hurt much.
Off to Mora tomorrow with Rob for a last little training camp before WOC. Can't wait!
