Orienteering race 41:21 [5] 5.2 km (7:57 / km) +225m 6:32 / km
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons

This couldn't have gone worse. Felt ok at the start - not great, but ok. Started together with Thierry and Shep and started well, spiking the first two controls in the heather/open area that we were sent into right from the start. On the way to 3, twisted my ankle - not the worst twist ever, but enough to make me walk a few steps and lose focus. And once the focus was lost, everything went downhill. I blew #3 - lost about 2:30, my worst mistake at a WOC so far, then was ok on 4 and 5, but twisted the same ankle going to 6, followed by another mistake - climbed an extra hill and started to lose that fighting spirit you need to get yourself up the hills. Dragged myself around the rest of the course, but made more mistakes in not-very-technical areas. Before looking at the splits, i'd say i lost at least 6:30 altogether, making this an official disaster. To add insult to injury, i could hear the announcers reading off the list of finalists when i punched the second-to-last control. All in all, an awful day for me - my worst WOC race so far. The only positives I can take away from this is that it hopefully shook me up and maybe angry for the sprint that's coming up on Tuesday. But disappointment is the overwhelming feeling so far...
This wasn't a great day for North Americans as a whole, as none of us qualified, though Mike Smith had an excellent run, and Sandy was close despite being injured. I will probably take the next two days completely off to let the ankle heal a bit and then hope to run hard on Tuesday.

Running 38:00 [2]

Running with Ross to and from Silkeborg Vesterskov and jogging between intervals.

Running 12:00 [5] 2.4 mi (5:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2006

Intervals with Ross on trails at Silkeborg Vesterskov: 90 seconds on - 60 off - 30 on - 120 off, six times. This was fun, and i felt good, getting better as the session went on. Great to have company for these, too. Followed by lying on the beach and swimming in the lake.

Orienteering 40:00 [2] 4.44 km (9:01 / km)
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons

Middle distance training in the morning on Ryekol, half the time in open heather-covered fields, half the time in the really junky, spiderweb-covered woods.

Orienteering 20:00 [2]

Setting controls for sprint training at Botanisk Have in Ã…rhus.

Orienteering 17:04 [3] 2.68 km (6:22 / km)
shoes: Asics 2006

Running the sprint training course i designed on Botanisk Have. Ran below race speed, but above jogging pace and felt pretty good, though still made a couple of 20-second mistakes here and there.

Running 27:35 [2] 3.45 mi (8:00 / mi)
shoes: 2006 VJ Falcons

Jogging to the start of training and back at the end with Clem, Hillary, Samantha, Zan, and Kat. Poor injured Ross stayed behind.

Orienteering 32:25 [3] *** 3.5 km (9:16 / km)
shoes: 2006 VJ Falcons

Easy control-picking-style training on Vesterskov in Silkeborg. We arrived here last night after some adventures with luggage, but everything has been nice once we've gotten here, including the yummy breakfast food at the youth hostel. Running in the Danish woods was fun, and the hills seemed pretty puny after Switzerland. :)

Running 25:47 [2] 3.22 mi (8:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics 2006

Morning jog with Marc and Sandra in Schupfen, including a bit on their local map so I could count this as a day with orienteering. Felt tired, but not completely dead after the Swiss 6. Afterwards - a bakery and lots of croissants!!! (Plus a mandatory visit to a goat that lives near Marc and Sandra's place.)

Swiss O Week Day 6 - the most technical race of the whole week, and the cleanest run for me. Did not go too fast, but avoided any mistakes besides hesitations and had a second good race in a row. 55th place on the map with the most spectacular views of the mountains we've gotten - on one leg, after climbing maybe 30 meters up on a trail and gasping for air, you come up over a small knoll, and the Matterhorn suddenly rises up right in front of you asd some inspiration to make you keep going - simply unbelievable!!!

I ended up 69th for the week in elite, just ahead of Matthias Mahr. Not a very good result, but the last couple of days were good, and i seemed to recover from the flu i had in the beginning of the week.

Swiss O Week Day 5 - a race through Zermatt. I felt tired on the long climbs in the beginning but gradually picked it up and ran well most of the way, making sure to take time to pick out good route choices and avoid "traps". Still made a couple of route choice mistakes and a couple of small errors in the street mazes, but overall my best race of the week thus far - 51st place.

This was a day off in the Swiss 6, but there was a sprint race offered in the village of Tasch where we were camping, so Ross, Kat, and I came over to run it. It was fun and very low key, and i had a good run, ending up 4th, with Rob Jessop winning in 9:40 or so.

Swiss O-Week Day 3. Was not sure if I was going to race this until the last moment, but my ankle felt ok, so I gave it a go. I immediately missed the first two controls, but slowly picked it up after that and would have been very happy with the race if not for a three-minute error in the red rock area, this incredibly detailed area of huge slabs of red rocks and cliffs surrounded by a glacier. This was a spectacular place to run, with the Matterhorn as a constant backdrop, and running across glaciers an actual valid route choice. Glad i ran this one!!! 73rd place.

Swiss O-Week Day 2. This was the steepest day, and I responded by twisting my ankle several times and struggling mightily on the hills. Made a couple of small mistakes and another sizeable one on a route choice, but mainly lost time due to feeling very tired on the hills and climbing slowly, sometimes on all fours. 88th place for the day.

Swiss 6 Day 1.
Very open, fast terrain with a few long steep climbs thrown in. I made a mistake early, staying too low and having to climb to come back to the control on #2, but ran reasonably well afterwards. Caught Ross and ran with him for a large chunk of the course, but got away in the end by a minute or so. Ended up 71st in Elite, about 16 minutes back.

Swiss 6 Prologue.
A forked town sprint, mass-started in a sports arena! It was a crazy experience, with about 150 elite and junior runners unleashed on the unsuspecting tourists and residents of Zermatt all at once. I made a big mistake early, losing an amazing 2:30 or so and never quite recovered, feeling fairly weak the whole way. Ended up pretty far down the results list (81st), but still enjoyed the crazy forking, with runners going in all different directions and nearly colliding with each other and tourists on every step of the way.

Friday Jul 14, 2006 #

Note

After a nice and welcome night of rest at Sandra's place in Schupfen, i feel a lot better this morning. Will hopefully race the sprint in Zermatt tomorrow.

Sick as a dog. Struggled through a 6-hour exam for the first half of the day, haven't really left the bed since. Not a good sign with 17 days to go.

Note

Went to see naprapath Thonny Wall for the 3rd and final time. The hamstring has been a lot better (knock on wood!) the last few days, and he confirmed this. Hopefully, after this last treatment i can finally approach full strength.

Running 20:00 [2] 2.22 mi (9:01 / mi)

Orienteering 10:30 [5] *** 1.41 km (7:27 / km)

After hanging post-it notes with Kat and watching Hammer and Spike run last year's Jan Svanlund Open course at Kung Bjorn's hill, i decided to do it myself and try to improve on my mispunch from last September. Did much better this time, though still made a couple of sizeable mistakes. Lots of fun!!

IF Thor club training at Borje-Jumkil. A rocky area, but with some nice parts. I started slow and lazy, not too focused or motivated, but forced myself to run a couple of legs hard and slowly got into it, running well for the second half of the course.

Running to the castle, between intervals, and then cool-down.

Running 14:00 [5] 2.33 mi (6:00 / mi)

Hill intervals at the castle. Ran the first two with Hammer, but his knee was giving him tons of problems, so i ran the last four myself.
2:20.0
2:19.0
2:21.6
2:19.8
2:21.1
2:23.3

These felt hard, especially due to the strong headwinds near the top of the hill. I ran the same workout in December in the snow and ran between 2:23-2:28, so i guess i am in about the same shape now as i was then. Hamstring hurt someafterwards, but not much during the intervals themselves.

Orienteering 58:50 [2] *** 5.0 km (11:46 / km)

Nice training on Nasten with Peter in the morning/early afternoon. Missed out on the awesome-sounding 30km run that the Linne guys are doing from Knivsta to Uppsala, but it was nice to get some O training in on Nasten - much more fun to run through than the thorny Gotlandic bushes. Also, the hamstring basically didnd't hurt the whole way!!! (Knock on wood.)

Gotland 3-days. Day 3 - chase start.
Another hot and humid day. My start place was 32nd, but there were four guys within a minute ahead of me, including Per Magnusson (who won the Canadian champs races in BC last year) starting seven seconds in front. So i started with the dumbest possible tactic, which was to grab my map and take off at full speed, trying to catch as many people as i could, right at the start. I started waaaaaay too fast and ran with Per, spiking the first few controls and actually leading the race through 3! Not surprisingly, this backfired in a hurry, as already on the way to 6 (maybe 3km into the course) i started feeling dizzy and clueless, the same was i felt towards the end of the race on day 1. I got to the first water stop, which had no water, and thought about DNFing, but ended up dragging myself along, knowing how mad i'd be at myself if i DNFed. So i crawled around the rest of the course (still ended up under 8 minutes per km) and finished, ending up 23rd for the day and overall, as a whole lot of people DNFed this tough course on a hot day.
Overall, i was very displeased with my performance on Gotland. I did not feel strong and confident except for parts of the middle distance race. I seem to be slower than i was in May and also more tentative in the woods. There is not a whole lot of time left before WOC to make up ground, but i'll do what i can. My reaction to heat also worries me a lot, but i don't know what to do about it, other than drink a lot and get in better shape. The one positive to take away was that i did race well for most of the middle distance, and that is the most important race for me in preparation for WOC. Hopefully i can build on that over the next two weeks...

Gotland 3-day. Day 2 - middle distance.
Managed to recover well from the heat problems of the day before and started well, attacking the course. In fact, i held a good, strong tempo throughout the course and was happy with the race, despite two sizeable mistakes - 1.5 minutes on 5, and 2.5 more on 8. I finished the race well, with virtually no mistakes on the last seven controls and was reasonably happy to be seven minutes back of the lead, though my placing was still not too good - 28th.

Orienteering race 1:21:22 [4] *** 10.6 km (7:41 / km)

Gotland 3 Days - Day 1.
Ran H21E and knew it was going to be a long, warm day right from the start. The temperature was in the high 80's F, and with a lot of trail running and plenty of clearings, we got no shortage of sun. I started well, taking safe route choices and getting used to the map. I had a good race through 13 but, having had no water on the course up to this point, started fading fast after that. I lost some time on 14 and 15, but really got into trouble on 16 as i as completely dehydrated and felt totally brain-dead. Really, i had to tell myself the control number six times or so and had trouble going in a straight line for more than a few meters. I am pretty sure this was a mild heat stroke (i experienced one a long time ago in Colorado and this felt about the same), and i was quite close to DNFing on #18, despite being just one control from the finish. Somehow, though, i dragged myself in and found te energy to complain angrily at the finish about the lack of water on the courses. Result: 30th out of 39, 18 minutes off the lead...

Orienteering 1:04:30 [2] 5.0 km (12:54 / km)

On the day off, went out with Peter and Kat to re-run parts of the relay courses from the day before. I had no problems spiking my disaster controls and navigated pretty well all around. We followed this up with a nice swim in a lake and a visit to the historic town of Visby, where we wondered around and ended up watching the Italy-Germany World Cup semifinal.

Gotland Relay - OK Linne team 1.
Myself - Ulrik - Erik Melin - Jorgen Ohlin.
This was the smallest relay I have ever run, with just seven teams in the men's division. Before the start, my teammates warned me that Gotland terrain is very tricky, and it's easy to make huge mistakes... I led off and started well, with the "pack" of four that formed through the first few controls and taking the lead going to 5 and through the spectator control. Felt good running and comfortable orienteering. And then disaster struck. Going to #8, we all climbed up to the top of a bunch of huge cliffs overlooking the sea and ran along a small path until one of the guys right behind me said "i think we've gone too far". Stupidly, i (and the others) all stopped and began to relocate. We ended up scattering and running all around and i found myself alone, completely unable to relocate. I ended up losing 10 (!!!) minutes on that control and another 3.5 on the next one, still rattled from the disaster. I caught one guy on the way to 10, another on the way to 11, and caught another one at the end, but the damage had been done. I finished 4th on the leg, a whopping 14 minutes behind the lead, with my head hanging low.
Well, turned out this was just the challenge our team needed, as my teammates chipped away at the lead over the next two legs, sending Jorgen out to anchor seven minutes back. He came in first by over four minutes, and we had our win and our faces (or in my case, butt) in the local newspaper. We got interviewed and asked some questions (in Swedish), but the reporter must have been a bit confused, as the "quotes" attributed to me contained a number of words i didn't understand. Still, it was pretty cool.

Orienteering 40:00 [1]
(injured)

Map hike with Kat and Peter on a map from the Gotland 2-days that Ulrik lent me. The terrain is interesting - very vague contour features and low visibility, combined with lots of thorny bushes. Fast if you are right on, but can get very slow if you miss by even just a bit.
