Running 1:32:30 [2] 15.07 km (6:08 / km) +418m 5:23 / km
shoes: Yellow mizunos

A long run from the Crazy Canyon trailhead in Missoula. Zigzagged on the ski trails, then climbed up to the top of Mt.Sentinel. From there, down Hellgate Canyon trail all the way down to the Clark Fork river, along Kim Williams trail and to the 'M' (an actual giant 'M' sculpted into the mountainside). Up the very steep trail to the 'M' and then along the fire road all the way across the mountain. Finally, down to the houses and back to Alli's mom's house.

Longest run I've done in a long time. Accidentally stopped my watch, so the run is split into two separate entries.

Running 55:00 [2] 8.5 km (6:28 / km)
shoes: VJ Supra 2014-1

A run with Alli on the ski trails from Pattee Canyon trailhead in Missoula. Steep! This would make some great orienteering terrain if we could find some less steep bits.

Running 58:02 [2] 8.19 km (7:05 / km) +353m 5:50 / km
shoes: Yellow mizunos

Running during the drive from Oregon to Missoula. Alli dropped me off at a trailhead next to the Lochsa river in Idaho and picked me up at the end of the trail. It was a bit of an adventure, as the trail was very overgrown with ferns and other plants, and featured a number of creek crossings that got fairly deep. Also, I was pretty nervous about meeting a bear and so was jittery the entire time. Some beautiful terrain and views along the trail, though! Very happy to see Alli at the end.

Orienteering 50:00 [3] 6.0 km (8:20 / km)
shoes: VJ Supra 2014-1

We were prepared. Maps were acquired. Courses from the 2005 US Champs were drawn. The location was found on google maps. We arrived at Dutchman Flats, and I was really excited to run on the best orienteering terrain in the US that I had never run on* in some beautiful summer weather.

At the start there was a steady ground cover of about 6 feet of snow. Doh! I still ended up running about half the red course, but the snow cover made the orienteering a bit tricky, to say the least, especially in the super-detailed lava rock area, where the rock and contour detail was concealed by the snow. It's some pretty special terrain. I'd love to come back and have another shot at it. Does anyone know what happened to the ORCA club that organized this event back in 2005?

* Any suggestions for the list of "Best US maps that Boris has never run on" are welcome!

Running 1:06:25 [2] 12.08 km (5:30 / km) +268m 4:57 / km
shoes: Yellow mizunos

From Alli's dad's house to Mt.Tabor Park in Portland. Once there, I ran a permanent orienteering course set up by CROC, and then ran back. A nice morning run.

Friday Jun 20, 2014 #

Running 47:00 [3] 9.3 km (5:03 / km)

Treadmill at the gym in Portland while watching Costa Rica beat Italy. I did a progressive run, starting at 5:20/km and increasing by 10 seconds every km.

Orienteering 10:00 [1]

Alli and I took Alli's nephew Odin orienteering at a training event put on by CROC, the Portland area orienteering club. We shadowed him and helped him a bunch with the navigation. There were a lot of things he was doing really well for a 6-year-old!

Cross-Training 1:25:00 [2]

A long, easy session on the elliptical while watching Colombia-Ivory Coast at a gym in Portland with Alli. Jet-lagged or just plain tired and underslept. Either way, not much energy.

Running 1:10:00 intensity: (10:00 @1) + (30:00 @2) + (30:00 @5) 14.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Yellow mizunos

Intervals with Linné: probably my last official Linné session for a long time! We did ladders on the Stadsskogen lit track, starting from 1 minute and going up to 5, and then back down. This felt hard, but I was happy to get through the entire workout. Ran in my brand-new France jersey that I got as a goodbye gift from Thierry.

Monday Jun 16, 2014 #

Running 1:30:00 [2] 16.5 km (5:27 / km)
shoes: Yellow mizunos

Did a trail loop around parts of Nåsten from home. Visited some place I'd never been to before and got down to the water by lake Ekoln.

Saturday Jun 14, 2014 #

Running 44:25 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (19:25 @5) 9.0 km (4:56 / km)
shoes: Yellow mizunos

I ran Sommarloppet - a 5km trail run in Stadsskogen. Alli ran too, and we jogged over from home together after barely waking up in time. I was hoping to see some improvement over the 18:51 I ran at Blodomloppet, but felt really weak the entire race and limped to the finish line in an unimpressive 19:25. I feel like I am training relatively well, but going backwards. Frustrating.

Running 32:00 [2] 5.57 km (5:45 / km)
shoes: 2013 Asics White+Blue

Easy run in Stadsskogen with theKempster.

shoes: Yellow mizunos

Warm-up and cooldown

Orienteering 20:00 [5] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)
shoes: Yellow mizunos

Sprint orienteering intervals in Sävja. We did mass-start, forked intervals of about 1km each. We did three of these. Really fun sprinting, and I felt pretty good running in the rain.

Running 1:05:44 [2] 11.95 km (5:30 / km)
shoes: Yellow mizunos

Back in Uppsala. Slept for five hours, then got out for a HittaUt run just as the rain was starting. Ran towards Kvarnbo and Stenhagen, mostly on dirt roads and small trails. Then back through Flogsta and Ekeby. Nice to run in the rain.

Monday Jun 9, 2014 #

Running 48:38 intensity: (36:38 @2) + (12:00 @4) 7.78 km (6:15 / km)
shoes: Yellow mizunos

Another run on the Gibson Reservoir trail, this time with Alli. I did some intervals where I would run hard and then jog back to Alli and rejoin her for a while before the next interval. Did an 8 minute interval, and then five or so hill intervals, each around a minute.

Sunday Jun 8, 2014 #

Running 1:08:00 [2] 11.2 km (6:04 / km)
shoes: Yellow mizunos

Trail run along Gibson Reservoir close to Sun Canyon Lodge with Alli's brother Jeremy. A really beautiful run, with the reservoir below us and mountains towering all around. Really fun, and a nice conversation, mostly discussing the soccer World Cup and explaining orienteering to Jeremy.

Saturday Jun 7, 2014 #

Running 34:00 [2] 4.86 km (7:00 / km)
shoes: Yellow mizunos

By myself at Sun Canyon Lodge near Augusta, Montana. We are here for a couple of days for Alli's mom's 60th birthday. I went out for a trail run to stretch my legs. The run was basically straight uphill in one direction, which, combined with the altitude (about 5000ft), made the going very tough in the beginning. Also, I was afraid I would get eaten by a bear. I didn't, so that's a plus.

Thursday Jun 5, 2014 #

Running 50:00 [2] 7.14 km (7:00 / km)
shoes: Yellow mizunos

With Alli on trails in Stadsskogen, Alli reading a map.

Note

So it's official. I will have a job for the next academic year in Washington, DC, as a Congressional Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, starting on September 1.

Alli and I are packing up and leaving Sweden on June 18 and will spend some time traveling around the States, seeing family and friends and doing some orienteering, before ending up in Washington towards the middle of August.

I am excited for this move and the new job and will undoubtedly be sad to finally leave Uppsala after so many years.

Running 30:00 [2] 6.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Yellow mizunos

Warm up and then cooldown with Jules, Ralph, and Kent O, mostly talking to Jules about US politics, which he knows way more about than I do.

Orienteering race 17:27 [5] 3.2 km (5:27 / km)
shoes: Yellow mizunos

Stockholm City Cup at Rålambshovsparken.

Pretty sure this is my last race in Sweden, at least this time around. I am also pretty sure that when Kenny and I showed up in Stockholm for the summer of 2001, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, that our first race was a Stockholm City Cup at Rålambshovsparken, so that makes for a fairly fitting farewell.

My records show a time of 17:30 in 2001, as opposed to the 17:27 tonight.

I think I ran pretty well technically. Was confused in one spot when I didn't see a control behind a garbage container. Also unsure of a couple of route choices, but nothing stands out from the splits as particularly bad. However, I have definitely gotten out of practice of running sprints - both in terms of pushing myself to the limit of map-reading ability, and also in terms of speed of map reading. I felt like I had a lot more left in me when I finished. Definitely should have run harder during the course. But that's just a matter of running more sprint races.

Ended up 52nd. A revanche-hungry Jonas Leandersson crushed the course in 12:56.

Nice dinner with Jules, Felicity, and Lachlan afterwards.

Orienteering 1:48:15 [2] 13.53 km (8:00 / km)
shoes: VJ Supra 2013

A long orienteering session on Nåsten, doing some old course from earlier this spring. Really great weather for running - cool and overcast, but not cold. Really enjoyed myself out there after getting through the first part of the course that was very junky.

Running 1:04:30 [2] 10.0 km (6:27 / km)

An afternoon run with Ross and Martin after spectating Sprint-SM in Uppsala on a glorious summer-like day. We did the Rödmossen loop and got very wet and muddy. So much fun! I will miss this.
