Pole Dancing 5:00 [3]

Working on my routine for Saturday with Coach Kat.

Running 48:46 intensity: (40:46 @2) + (8:00 @5) 9.29 km (5:15 / km)
shoes: 2010 Asics

Running with some Yale XC Skiing people, including some unexpected hill repeats at the Divinity School. Did 8, all between 47-51 seconds. Will Anderson was slightly faster most of the time - catching him will be a good goal for the winter.
Now just hoping to not wake up sick again tomorrow.

Orienteering 1:00:11 [2] 7.72 km (7:47 / km) +276m 6:37 / km
shoes: VJ Supra

O-training at Lewis Morris, running mostly with Neil and a bit with Ali. Was feeling completely unmotivated at first, but having company helped a lot. Nice, runnable forest helped too.
The outing was followed by a delicious feast at Sergei and Kseniya's, who also put out streamers for us. Superstars!

Note

I should add that the issues I had with the Traverse were entirely mine, and had nothing to do with Ian's fine course or the organization. It was a fine event, and Judy's hot soup at the finish was a very welcome bonus!

The biggest highlights of the day for me were seeing some familiar faces for the first time in ages:

1) Murray and Kelly Lamb. Murray is living in Boston now, going to grad school in Brandeis, and Kelly and the rest of the family were visiting them. Great seeing them, hope to see Murray at more races!

2) Dave Donaldson! Him I hadn't seen since roughly 1996. He is also living in Boston and professing at MIT. CSU has to make an effort to get him out to more events, as he is an awesome orienteer with lots of experience and a great guy who can contribute to the club if he gets enthusiastic about the sport again.

A lowlight:

A certain arctic queen (let's not name names here), who was signed up for the race, never made an appearance. Boo.
11 AM

Orienteering 1:01:05 [3] 8.98 km (6:48 / km) +178m 6:11 / km
shoes: VJ Supra

As kids say these days, epic fail.
A very depressing and disappointing day, though not out of the norm for me at Blue Hills (see, for example, http://www.attackpoint.org/viewlog.jsp/user_13/per...).

This marked a fitting end to an awful fall season, my worst in a long time.
Let's see...

Highlander - DNS
US Champs Day 1 - 18th/42, 21:03 behind
US Champs Day 2 - 14th/38, 18:43 behind
CSU A-Meet prologue - 1st/28, 0:11 ahead (the lone bright spot)
CSU A-Meet chase - DNS
NEOC A-Meet long - 4th/23, 9:15 behind
Blue Hills Traverse - DNF

Well, the spring has to go better, right?

Vote for course of the year on WorldOfO: http://news.worldofo.com/2010/11/15/vote-for-the-c...

A couple of US and Canadian entries on the list to choose from!

Running 34:00 intensity: (6:00 @1) + (23:00 @2) + (5:00 @5) 6.8 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: 2010 Asics

A very short session of hill reps on the St.Ronan Street Dog Park Hill. Just did 5 reps to see if I am over my various colds of the last two weeks. The answer is that I am almost over them, but not quite. Hopefully will feel good by the weekend.
Times:
56.0
56.0
54.6
55.0
55.0

Hmm, all of these times are faster than any of the ones I ran the last time I ran this hill three weeks ago (http://www.attackpoint.org/viewlog.jsp/user_13/per...). This may help explain me feeling pretty ordinary.

Running 35:00 [2] 4.8 mi (7:17 / mi)
shoes: 2010 Asics

T.rex training 30:00 [1]

Circuits with the ski team.

Note

I have not felt back pain for a week now, so I will declare that injury to be healed. Now I just have to get over my current cold and I can restart training yet again.

Thursday Nov 11, 2010 #

Running 30:00 [2] 3.8 mi (7:54 / mi)

Around ASU campus in the morning. Nice to be in the sunshine, though it was pretty chilly. Campus deserted on Veterans' Day at 7am.

Event: Hickory Run

Kayaking 1:00:00 [1]

A couple of hours of canoeing around the Everglades, this time without flipping over. Saw a giant crocodile and lots of birds (pelicans, ospreys, egrets, herons, vultures, cormorants). Then more crocodiles in the marina next to the parking lot after we finished canoeing. Great day!

Note
(sick)

Bad fever, sore throat, the works when I woke up this morning. Perfect before tomorrow's start of our mini-vacation in Florida.

Warm-up and cool-down

T.rex training 30:00 [1]

Decided to go to practice with the Yale Ski Team to see what kind of stuff they did and to have some company. After a warm-up, did a few ski-specific jumping exercises, then a bunch of core stuff plus push-ups and dips. I am woefully weak. Time to start training for Switzerland!
