Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] *****
shoes: 2009 VJ Falcons

Cat's Meow! Kat and I reran parts of our courses from last fall's US Champs. The terrain there is just fantastic, and nearly is fun in summer. I really enjoyed being out there again and redoing the legs that I screwed up last fall. Also, we saw a badger!

Orienteering 45:00 [2] ***
shoes: 2009 VJ Falcons

An outing to Mendon Ponds. I've never run on this map before, and Kat and I went over to the part with all the intricate contours and depressions. It was great! Some parts were overgrown, but a lot of it was beautiful forest with challenging orienteering. Really fun.

NEOC local meet at Estabrook Woods in Concord, MA.
A lot has changed since my last NEOC local meet, which was at Nobscot in 2006. This time, we did not have to copy maps on time, or at all, as they were pre-printed and pre-bagged. There was e-punching, and the results were up the very same evening (http://www.newenglandorienteering.org/results/117-...) along with WinSplits and RouteGadget. That's great! For sure, the quality of the local events has improved tremendously.
I knew ahead of time that the map was sketchy in places, so that didn't trip me up too much. The only real negative comment I have about the meet is the lack of reciprocity of lower entry fees for members of other O-clubs. WCOC charges the same price for NEOC, HVO, UNO, CSU, DVOA, etc members for its meets as it does its own members. I was surprised to see that NEOC did not offer the same courtesy. It's not a huge deal, since meet entry fees are too low for the product being offered anyway, but it would have been a nice touch.
Oh yeah, my run. It went ok. There were times when I treated the map as a rogaine map, and just used the big features to get around, but otherwise most of the map was ok, and there are some great bits of terrain in there. Ian and Wendy did a great job with the courses, making them as fun and fair as possible given the map age and quality. Thanks NEOC!

Running around Boston Common before and after the downpour

Orienteering race 14:11 [5] *** 2.8 km (5:04 / km)

Boston Park-O at Boston Common!

My first Park-O race since 2002, I think. Very exciting to see the park-O series going strong!
We were caught in a torrential downpour, which actually made running a lot more fun. I was too excited to remember to read the map and made tons of mistakes, but it didn't matter. I had lots of fun!

Afterwards, we ate some weird Chinese food at Alex's office and made plans (mostly without my involvement) for CSU summer training. The current CSU 3.0 gang is a great bunch of people, and it is both really enjoyable to spend time with them and exciting to see the club thriving ten years after we, led by Kenny, resurrected it.

Day 1

New Haven, CT - Boston, MA

We spent several hours at the REI in Framingham getting and installing a roof rack and rocketbox for our Honda. We finally managed, so the car is slightly less ridiculously crowded, but still pretty full.

A nice evening of Settlers of Catan at Sam and Ross' followed.

Running 53:13 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (27:00 @2) + (11:13 @5) 10.64 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Rob's shoes

Finally dragged myself outside for intervals after a long day. Felt awful from the start, and it never got better. Just had nothing today. Struggled through four of my planned six intervals and trudged home, where I comforted myself with the thought of Swedish Royal Wedding Chocolate that awaited me, courtesy of Karen. It was delicious.

Note

Kat and I are hitting the road tomorrow, and won't be back for a while. I am excited. First destination: Boston.
