Note

Tried watching the tail end of the GPS tracking for today's Elitserien sprint in Norrköping that Daniel Hubmann and Simone Niggli dominated, but the tracking was way off. Here you can see why: http://omaps.worldofo.com/?id=23005&s3=1

At West Rock alone after being abandoned by all the ladies. The New Haven Invalid Club seems to be growing...
Went along the Regicides trail on top of the ridge, then down the yellow trail and back along the bottom. Listened to a podcast of some Sherlock Holmes stories, then some Chekhov stories, and then This American Life, which was my first time listening to it. Interesting show, though I got the impression that the hosts were sitting behind the scenes, laughing at the unfortunate normal people and their misfortunes. Though maybe I am just a bit jaded.

Note

Does anyone out there (not located too far away from New Haven) have a campervan, small RV, or sleeper trailer (like a Teardrop) that they would be willing to rent to us from the middle of June to the middle of July?
We are thinking of driving out to our wedding in California and then doing some traveling out west (possibly hitting NAOC) before coming back East again. Any tips on a cheap way to do this that does not involve sleeping in our Honda Accord would be appreciated!

Note

Our first wedding present just came in the mail, and it looks like a big box of yum!!!! Can't wait to open it when Kat gets home!

Following the advice I got here after my 5km debacle last week, here is an attempt to ease into speedwork with some intervals. Decided to do 400's followed by a few 200's. According to Jack Daniels, my 400m interval pace should be 86. Really? That sounds slow. I tried running that, but obviously failed:

Had slightly over 1 minute rest between intervals, as I started with Becky each time. This felt ok, not too hard, so I decided to do the 200's as planned, just four of them:

Definitely glad to have Becky there for the workout. Way more fun with company!
I love looking at the GPS track and the speed graph for track workouts. Very amusing.

Skiing 1:59:06 [1] 28.87 km (4:08 / km)

Was thinking of going for a long run, but just didn't feel inspired, so I decided to finally test out the roller skis I borrowed from the Yale ski team. Managed to put on the roller ski pole tips on my skate poles, and I was off. Explored the Farmington Canal Trail and really liked it. The pavement was really smooth, and there were almost no people, especially once I got past the ghetto (where I got plenty of amusing comments, mostly positive ones). Went up past Sleeping Giant, almost to Brooksvale and then back. Felt very tired the last 15-20 minutes, but really enjoyed it. Will have to do more rollerskiing in the next few months.

Running a course made up by Bob Burg out of the controls used for the kids' score-O at Brooksvale. Becky and I helped Bob and Ed Hicks run a half-day orienteering clinic for a bunch of junior-high kids from Hamden and New Haven. There were over 60 of them, and keeping the chaos under control was a major part of the day, but it does feel like they learned something and certainly had fun running around the woods, which is probably the main goal anyway.

Running 30:00 [1]

Random running around and collecting controls after the event.

In the last couple of months I hadn't mentioned my butt injury much and it had not really bothered me a whole lot during running and orienteering, except when sitting in a car after training or racing. So, foolishly inspired by the fun competitive atmosphere of the last three weekends and encouraged by some well-meaning friends' comments, I began entertaining thoughts of some sort of comeback to actual competitive orienteering and not the half-assed pretense I have been going through for the last two years. To test this theory, I decided to see what my fitness level was and run a 5km time trial on the track. Since my PR was in the high 16s from before the injury, I figured breaking 18 would be an admirable goal this time around. I started out ok, right on pace, though clearly struggling to have any speed or power in my legs. Out of shape is ok, I just wanted to get through this pain-free. That worked for six laps. On the seventh, the infamous "butt muscle" started hurting, on the eighth I found myself limping, on the ninth I stopped.
Extremely frustrating - I felt gutted.

CSU Harriman Camp Session 6 - Long Distance at Baileytown

Dragged myself around one last training session. Combining organizing a training camp with participating in it is doable, but is not ideal.
Had no power in the legs the whole way, which led to mistakes. On 2, I went down the first saddle I saw rather than climb one more contour and run to the correct saddle. On 6, I tried to use the trail to climb, but the trail disappeared and I was uncertain of where I was on the hill. I think my route would actually have been good if executed correctly, but as it was, I lost time to Ross, Nikolay, Brendan, and Sam who were converging on this control all together. Was with Brendan and Sam for a while after that, but got away a bit after 10 and saw no one else the rest of the way except for occasional glimpses of Nikolay. Seemed to get a bit of a second wind at 14 and ran solidly to the end of the course. A nice way to finish off a tough weekend.

A huge thanks to all my helpers (Nadya Popova, Paul Bennett, Guy Olsen, Patrick Goeres, Eric Kemp, Carl Childs) and to everyone who helped copy maps. A special thank you to Bernie and Liisa Breton who kindly opened up their home to a mob of hungry, dirty, smelly orienteers for several days!

CSU Harriman Camp Session 4 - Middle Distance Time Trial

I started last after starting everybody off. I had copied this course about 25 times earlier that morning, so I knew where it went, but I had tried not to think about particular legs or routes. Had a pretty clean race, running hard on the flats and struggling mightily on the uphills. Was too wide off the line on 14 and far too slow down the hill to 19, otherwise not much time lost. Ended up 1:30 behind Patrick and about :30 ahead of Ross, Kenny, and Nikolay. I wonder how similar my course design is to what Greg and Sergei will come up with for the Team Trials middle.

CSU Harriman Camp Session 5 - Relay on Surebridge

Put myself on a team with Erin. She came back from the first leg a couple of minutes after the boys, and I went out on Loop C. Definitely had an advantage as I had put out all the streamers myself, even if not in the order I was running them in now. Had a very clean run on this one, didn't miss anything and took a good route to 4 (low to avoid all the junk).
After resting while Erin ran her second loop, I went out on B and immediately felt the tiredness from the whole weekend catch up tom. I then messed up 3, managed to crunch my ankle hard in the process and got demoralized as Nikolay passed me while I walked off my ankle. Jogged the rest of the loop, tagged Erin and decided I was done.
The relay was a fun training - a good way to take advantage of having many people, rather than organizing the kind of exercises you can do by yourself. In retrospect, I would have made the legs about 30% shorter, as 2km in tough Harriman terrain was a bit too much.

CSU Harriman Camp Session 3 - Otervals on Pole Brook

I skipped the morning session as I was feeling extremely tired and needed time to copy courses for the afternoon's intervals. I divided people into groups for the intervals and ended up in the second group with Sergei F, Andrew C, and Brendan after some shuffling. For each interval (about 600-800 meters, 4 controls), we shuffled the starting order and took off with ~20 seconds in between. In retrospect, slightly closer start times would have worked a bit better for us, but it was still good. In general, Andrew ran the fastest and Brendan took the cleanest routes, and the three of us were often close together, with Sergei a bit behind. I thought this was a really good training, and we were all very tired in the end. Need more sessions like this to get us moving through the forest at full speed.

CSU Harriman Camp Session 1 - Night Sprint on Polebrook

After hanging controls on Baileytown, I drove over to Polebrook and sat in the car for about 5 hours until everyone showed up. Sergei F and Eric K ran the sprint at the scheduled time, while the CSU crowd rolled in around 10:30pm. It was dark, cold, and raining - perfect weather for a night sprint. We all mass-started, and promptly messed up #1. Got there with Ross, and then we went our separate ways to do the loops in different orders. I ran well for the first loop (it helped that the controls were hanging high and reflecting from a long ways away), but made a mistake finding the second pivot control the second time, ending up on the hilltop to the right of it. When I finally got the control, I could see Ross' lamp ahead of me and set off in pursuit. We were together on 10,11,12, but he took a better route to 13 (staying higher) and got ahead. I almost couldn't see him coming into 14, but must have taken a better line to 15 (well left of the line, hitting the road at the junction) and caught up. Through the buildings, I was just hoping Ross would hesitate or miss something, but that was not to be, and he orienteered confidently in front all the way to the finish, beating me by 10 seconds or so.

Note

Time to look at the goals I wrote up for Easter and assess what I did.

Goals:
1) Top half overall
2) Top 15 at least one day
3) >900 points for the WRE
4) <1 minute in mistakes for the sprint; <2 minutes for the middle; <5 minutes for the long

Results:
1) Depends on how you count. If you count all the participants who did not skip a day because of course-setting (unfair to include them), then I was 25/50. If you count all the participants who finished all the days, then I am 25/34. I'll take the first number... Success, but barely.

2) The closest I came was 16th in the sprint. I definitely did not think that would be my best day!

3) FAILURE.

4) Sprint: about 30 seconds lost (success)
Middle: about 8 minutes lost (fail)
Long; about 3:30 lost (success)

Overall, it was a very disappointing Easter. I knew my shape was not very good coming in, but I did not expect it to be quite this bad. I guess injuries and lack of training have now completely caught up to me.
My technical performance was also pretty bad, especially in the middle distance race, where I fell apart.
Perhaps the best thing to take away from this is that the first half of my chase was very good, as I was 9th through half the course (#13). This means I am still capable of good orienteering at decent speed, but I have a long way to go before I can even think about being back in my 2006-2007 shape.

Easter 2010 - Chase Start - Collector Hill
8.3km, 295m climb, 26 controls

Because of my disaster on the middle day, I missed out on the actual chase start and was in the group that started with one-minute intervals after the end of the chase start field (45 minutes after Julian went off with a massive lead.)
It was very warm, and I was feeling tired, so I anticipated a tough day. I started well and caught the guy starting in front of me at #2. Stayed with him through the first couple of controls of the butterfly. I am still not sure of the best route to #3. I suspect that the trail option around to the north would have been good and would have saved much-needed strength for the rest of the course, as the forest was tough to run through - open, but with lots of brashings on the ground. Clean through the butterfly, where we picked up Simon Goddard. Kept a good pace through the second loop and saw Kerrin and Andy leaving 13. Caught them at 14 and stayed with them at 15, where I just hit the wall. Tripped and fell coming into the control, smacking my thigh and knee hard against the rock. Ran for a few steps, then walked a bit after the control, then started running again, but suddenly felt completely powerless. I suspect that taking the worse, but less physical route choice to 16 on the trail to the left would have helped me get going a bit, but instead I just stumbled along on the line, losing 2 minutes on the leg without making a mistake. Easier running to 17, and so I got moving again, now with Lorenzo, who caught me from 1 minute back. Clean to 18 and actually saw Andy, Simon and Kerrin again going to 18 but was too tired to catch up. Struggled through the last loop and was very glad to get into the finish. A tough day, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Easter 2010 - Day 2 - Classic

My legs felt a lot better than the day before, and this race went about as well as a classic could have gone for me on the small amount of training I have done. The terrain was fast and open with some hills, and the forest was often a pleasure to run through. The course setting was, once again, very good with no dead running time you often see in classics.

It took me some time to get into the map, and I was a bit shaky on 1 and 2, and very unsure to 4. Settled down after that and had a very good long leg to 7. Was picked up by Robbie and Evan Barr at 12 and stayed with them through 15. Made one more mistake at 19, not noticing the green patch, as it looked very different from what I expected. Felt ok coming through the spectator control, but getting tired quickly after that. Managed to keep it together through the finish - a pretty good classic race for me.
Julian again destroyed the field in 74 minutes, 6 ahead of 2nd place Simon.

Easter 2010 - Middle DIstance WRE

Absolutely miserable. I had nothing in the tank today and struggled to get around the course. Looking at my routes, I was actually orienteering pretty well in the first half and handled the first tricky section of low-visibility rock detail without any major disasters, but my bad shape caught up with me after I tried to stay with Robbie Preston on 10-11. I was obviously running out of my comfort zone and lost control on the way to 12. I ended up low and had to fight uphill through the dark green and up massive rocks. This cost me 5 (!!) minutes and took all the will to fight out of me. I really struggled the rest of the way and left more time at 16 - I was in the right place but had no confidence at all and assumed I was wrong. Feeling very embarrassed and frustrated when I finished. This was my worst-ever WRE, worse than the WOC qual in the Ukraine that featured an 11-minute mistake and the Portugal O-Meeting where I was puking before, during, and after the "race." I can honestly say that there were no positives to take away from this day.
Julian won in an amazing 35:33, nearly four minutes ahead of Shep, and 8 minutes ahead of Robbie in 4th place.

I should add that the course was great, with nice changes of pace between the difficult rock and the faster open stuff, and I would have loved to run this course when I was in better shape.

In the evening we went over to Jules' and Felicity's place fir a barbecue (amazingly, my first in Oz) and hung out with a large chunk of the Australian under-30 orienteering crowd. It was great to meet a bunch of orienteers whom I knew mainly through AP or Shep's stories and to see some old friends. A really nice atmosphere, and a great bunch of people. I'd love to see the US under-30 O-crowd to expand to this size - big enough to have strong competitive fields, but still small enough to feel like a family.

Sprint at the Australian Defense Academy
Interesting course - started with high speed racing through the fields, then we got thrown into a tricky section of buildings and passageways, then another few controls in the fields and then one final tricky section of buildings once our brains were fried. I had a good race and stayed in control most of the way. The biggest mistake I remember was about 10 seconds running past a staircase going to #20, but splits show that I lost a bunch of time on 13 too (~25 seconds). Need to wait till we get the maps back to figure out what happened.
Finished 15th, I think, which would fulfill some of my goals for the weekend. Julian killed the field with low 15's.
