All the various warm-ups and cool-downs of the day.

Orienteering race 44:51 [5] *** 6.1 km (7:21 / km)

OK Linne Latvia Training Camp. Day 7. AM.
Kapa 3-days Day 2. Middle distance WRE, H21E.

I had been looking forward to this middle distance world ranking event for a while now and felt quite good at the start. That feeling lasted till about the first control, where I wasn't sure where exactly I hit a vague ridge in the green and ran around for over a minute trying to figure it out. On the way to 3, I realized that I was feeling pretty tired and tried to push myself harder, not looking at the map nearly enough. In fact, this plagued me during the whole race - I was just too lazy with my map reading and orienteered more like I had the day before, when there were pretty long stretches of just running, with no fine navigation necessary. This cost me over and over today - a bunch of small mistakes on 3,4,5,6, then a good stretch between 7 and 13, and then two more boneheaded errors on 14 and 15, the last one coming in full view of the finish. Again, very disappointing. In an awful mood after the race. Ended up 51st, over 9 (!!!) minutes back of Martins Sirmais' winning time.

Kapa 3-days Sprint. H21E.

An evening sprint race in a park in Liepaja, right on the Baltic shore. This was a really fun sprint, with a mix of park orienteering and intricate sand dune running. The sand "canyons" also provided for excellent spectating, and the crowds were quite large and loud, making for a really fun atmosphere. Like most of us, I was very tired beforehand and barely managed a warm-up jog. After the start, though, I was feeling pretty good and managed to run ok. I made a 45-second mitske early on, running just by a bit on #6, but ran well on the sand dunes, not really making any mistakes, and finished 16th overall, 2:10 behind Mats' impressive winning time, but just over 1:30 from a top 3.

Note

Oddly, still got over 900 WRE points despite an awful race. What a weird system. Also, there is someone named Kristaps Tamuzs in the results, who is listed as being from USA. Anyone know who this is? I did see some peope in USA Orienteering jackets, but I think they were all women, and I think they were there for the deaf (hearing-impaired? What's the PC term these days?) orienteering races.

OK Linne Latvia Training Camp. Day 6.
Kapa 3-Days Day 1. H21E.

After feeling comfortable in this sand dune terrain for a few days, I was quite optimistic about my chances for decent runs at the Kapa 3-days. And, though I felt a bit tired on the first day, I seemed to run ok, avoiding major mistakes. I was pretty content with my run when I finished, though I knew I did get tired towards the end and lost some time. However, looking at the splits later, I saw that I simply wasn't running fast enough and also choosing overly conservative route choices. Disappointing. Ended up 44th on the day, 16 minutes behind Mats' winning time. I probably would have been even more disappointed if I knew then that this would be my best result of the 3 days...

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] 6.0 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: 2007 VJ Falcons

OK Linne Latvia Training Camp. Day 5. AM.
Yesterday part 1 of the camp ended, and we (by now a massive group of 45 Linne runners) moved to Bernati, just south of Liepaja, after a several-hour stop in Riga to be touristy. This included visiting the Museum of Occupation of Latvia from 1940-1991, which provided a picture of the USSR as an aggressor that I wasn't exposed to much when growing up in Moscow.
Anyway, today we (the foreigners - Kat, Suzanne, Michele, Patrick, and myself) were responsible for training, so I went out to hang a bunch of toilet paper controls in the morning. Feeling, not surprisingly, tired.

Orienteering 30:00 [1]

OK Linne Latvia Training Camp. Day 5. PM.
Hanging more controls in the afternoon with Kat. Mostly walking this time. Very, very windy on the beautiful beach. I highly recommend Suzanne's pictures for views of the beach and the camp life in general.

Middle distance training race on a different part of Garciems, the 1:7500 map we ran on yesterday. Ran quite well most of the way, but made a 2:30 mistake on a control, where the map was very sketchy. A lot of people made a mistake in that area. Good race otherwise. Best time - Ulf Troeng, 30 min.

Running 20:00 [2] 2.5 mi (8:00 / mi)

OK Linne Latvia Training Camp. Day 3. PM.
Tennis-OL with Michele and Patrick. In other words, orienteering intervals, where each interval consist of a short course, about 800-1200 m with 4-5 controls. We start about 20 seconds apart and take turns starting first, second, and last. The idea is to run at above race speed and try to maintain concentration while not being swayed by others around. The "tennis" aspect of it is that apparently you get points for finishing each interval first.
We did this on Saulkrastu, a map right next to our accommodations, with a mixture of normal sand dune terrain, some short and steep hills, and flat areas with low visibility and tons of pits - this last part was certainly the hardest to orienteer in at high speed. We did the first four with Patrick and Michele, then just with Michele after Patrick's shins started hurting. I ran very hard and orienteered pretty well, though Michele was definitely stronger than me on the last interval, which we did as a mini-mass start. This was great training, and excellent terrain for this type of training.

Orienteering loops on Garciems, a very detailed 1:7500 map. Lots of small depressions and hills and really fast running, but pretty soft and sandy ground, making running very tiring pretty quivkly.
My blister hurt, so I skipped out on the last loop.

Warm-up and cool-down

Running 24:00 [4] 4.1 mi (5:51 / mi)
shoes: Saucony 2006

Getting back to doing some speedwork and starting with threshold pace intervals - 2x12 min with 2 min rest. I did these on the dirt road that goes along the North side of Nåsten. Felt pretty good the whole way and maintained a pretty steady pace - went about 10 meters further on the second interval. The biggest challenge was avoiding crushing the snails that crawled out onto the road after the rain.

Note

Because of her excellent B-final race at the 1st round of the World Cup in Finland, Sandra gets to run the A-final in the 2nd round Norway tomorrow!

Go Sandra!

Also, Brent, Mike Smith, and Charlotte are racing the B Final for Canada. Good luck to all of them as well!

Running 35:42 [2] 4.0 mi (8:56 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Trail Shoes

Easy morning jog around Stadsskogen with Sandra and Cristina. We had made more ambitious plans for this run the night before, but were all too sore/tired to carry them out.

Running 15:00 [2] 1.7 mi (8:49 / mi)
shoes: 2007 model Falcons

Jogging to/from the start of training with Cristina.

Orienteering 1:12:15 [1] *** 4.0 km (18:04 / km)
shoes: 2007 model Falcons

An easy technique session with Cristina on Nåsten. We did a middle distance course and took turns leading and saying what features we were looking for and checking off along the way. This is good training for when one is tired - it really forces you to concentrate on the orienteering, which is something I have trouble with when tired.
I was feeling dizzy and had a headache on the way over to the map, but started feeling better while orienteering and was fine by the time I went home after drinking 2.5 liters of water. Must have been dehydrated after my 3-hour nap this afternoon... Probably still not completely recovered from Jukola and the associated sleep deprivation.
There were cows on the way to the start.

T.rex training 32:00 [2]

Circuits with Linne after technique training. Not too many people there - by the end, foreigners outnumbered Swedes!
Quite sore from yesterday.

Jogging over to the start with Patrick, Sandra, and Cristina.

Orienteering 22:00 [2] 2.0 km (11:00 / km)
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons

A couple of months ago, when we saw that a number of US orienteers were coming over for Jukola, Suzanne and I offered to put on a mini training camp for anyone who was interested the week after Jukola in Uppsala. Sandra and Cristina took us up on the offer, and so here we were, in Lunsen (a must for any orienteer visiting Uppsala), surrounded by flies swarming around our faces and ants very slowly eating our feet. I drew four loops, trying to give each loop a distinct character, and each of us hung streamers for one of the loops.

Orienteering 50:00 [3] ***** 6.0 km (8:20 / km)
shoes: 2006-2 VJ Falcons

After setting my loop, I went out and ran the other three, trying to run at just below race pace. I was, however, feeling pretty low on energy which led to concentration lapses and a bunch of mistakes. Nothing where I was totally lost, which can easily happen on Lunsen, but still very frustrating,

Running to/from KG/swamp.

Swamp Football 45:00 [4]

This being my training week in the club, and it also being the week after Jukola, it was time to try something a little different. In the monthly schedule, I entitled this "swamp games", myself unsure of what would become of this. Ths standard plan was swamp soccer - a training exercise Kenny and I had heard about from Swedish orienteering gymnasium students years ago. One problem, however, was the lack of a soccer ball. When dispatching a very kind Patrick to go acquire one downtown, I realized that I had an American football lying around that just needed some pumping up, and so a pump was procured as well as a soccer ball. When coming to the clubhouse with Cristina, I was worried that no one would come to this bizarre training organized by a mere American, but about 15-20 people were there, even including some of our stars. We then ran over to a preselected swamp (nice, open, and soft), and I gave a bit of a speech about my dreams as a small boy to one day play real swamp football with world-famous Swedish orienteers. After this, the pigskin came out, and it was time to explain (somewhat modified for the swamp arena) NFL rules in Swedish. Needless to say, this was quite a challenge, and I am fairly certain I failed. (In fairness, I may well not have fared any better in English.)
Then we played. It only took a few downs for Swedes to decide that there is not running and fighting, and the game gradually generated into a combination of rugby and mud wrestling. This was ridiculously fun and brought out a side of the Swedes I had never really witnessed in a sober state before. All the normal reserve and shyness be damned, they were tackling, pushing, shoving, rolling in the mud, and dragging each other (and us, too) around like teenage girls fighting for a Justin Timberlake autograph. It was great! This applied to everyone - 14-year-old Mandus Ridefelt would jump on top of 2-meter tall Staffan and bring him down with a loud splash; Mats had no reservations about prying the ball out of Becka's hands while shoving her deeper into the mud; and Lars would execute a flying tackle of Cristina, get up and ask if anyone knew who she was.
By the end, everyone was exhausted, the swamp looked like a battlefield, and we were stumbling about, throwing clumps of mud at each other. I don't know about everyone else, but for me it was not only a really, really fun afternoon, but also an experience that gave me a bit of hope that I may yet one day find myself fitting into this society and feeling at home here.

Orienteering 1:14:35 [2] 5.7 km (13:05 / km)
shoes: 2007 VJ Falcons

A nice, easy training on Nåsten with Sandra after slipping in and out of consciousness most of the morning and afternoon, having slept 9 hours in the previous 72. I ran ahead in the beginning, saying the features I was seeing and using for navigation. Then we switched, and Sandra ran ahead and talked. She did really well navigating and seemed quite confident in her orienteering, a big change from her visit here a year ago. Very cool.

Running 25:00 [2] 2.0 mi (12:30 / mi)
shoes: 2007 model Falcons

Woke up at about 3:30am. Found out that our team (Linne 3) was 45 minutes back after just two legs. Had breakfast. Spectated for a while, cheering for our first two teams. Saw Ulrik come back after an awesome run on long night. Then saw Albin come back after an awesome run on leg 4. When Oskar sent out Michele on leg 6, I started changing and warming up. Went for a reasonably long warm-up, as I was feeling very sluggish and sleep-deprived. Got excited as I checked the team's standings through radio controls and saw that Michele was running well. Came to the exchange area to see our Italian flying down the finish chute. Sweet.

Jukola, leg 7. Went out 116th, came back 117th.
The whole race I felt as if I was sleep-running. Orienteering was somehow happening, but I wasn't quite aware of it. Except that I fell a lot. Maybe a half dozen times. Felt very tired in the middle of the race, after making an idiotic 5-minute mistake on #6, a dot knoll in the green. Was worried I didn't have enough energy to finish. Slowly got better, though, and picked it up a bit on the last loop. Ended up with a total of about 10 minutes of errors, which is a lot, but could have easily been worse in this tough, technical terrain. I even managed to pass one team on the run-in, which is always cool. Still, on fresher legs and with a more consistent run I could have picked up some places rather than dropping 1. Ending up 117th for a club's 3rd team is pretty damn good, especially after being 440th after 1 leg. And it's kinda cool having 1000 teams finish behind us. Also, this was my 3rd Jukola. In my first one, in 2001, I was 594th on my leg. In my second one, in 2006, I was 282nd. This year, I was 140th. Looks like progress.
Here is Mats' map from the 7th leg: http://www.matstroeng.se/maps/2007/show_map.php?ma...
The terrain and course were great. Very challenging, different types of orienteering, and testing many different skills. I am very impressed with those who managed to get around their courses without mistakes.

Another lovely morning on Åland. I ran out of our cabin, ran down the road, and then ran up and back down the highest mountain on Åland - Orrdalsklint, which towers above the islands at its majestic 128 (or 129 - depending on the source) meters over sea level. It was a pretty faint trail going up, with lots of bare rock and moss where it nearly disappeared, but the woods were very pretty the entire way, and the view from the top was awesome.

Tracked down a training session set by Ålands IF on a map called Svinö (Pig Island?) to the east of Mariehamn. Even for this tiny little training with just a dozen people or so, they still used EMIT, which is pretty cool. The terrain and map were nothing special, and I managed to get stuck in nettles a couple of times and get a few nasty bite marks from what must have been a spider going nuts on my arm. The one nice thing was getting in a bit of experience on Finnish-style maps before Jukola.

Uppland District Champs in sprint, in Östervåla. A lot of our stars didn't show up, probably because they don't think sprint is real orienteering, so I figured there was a chance for a good result on this really hot Swedish day. The course turned out to be fairly simple for a sprint, with a few slightly more technical areas of bushes and greeen patches, as well as a couple of nice route choice legs. Running felt hard, probably because I've been sick all week and because it was hot. I managed to avoid making any significant mistakes and was quite pleased to catch Patrick (wildcolonialboy on AP), who started two minutes before me. Ended up 3rd overall, 2nd in the district, about 1:00 behind Millinger. Nice to get my first DM medal.
It was also really cool to watch my dad go out and run an open course. Been a while since we've been to an O-meet together!

Warming up for the Jukola test. Clear right from the beginning that I wasn't 100% healthy yet, so for once in my life, I made a mature decision and decide to switch down to the women's course and take it fairly easy. (I thought about trying the men's course and taking it easy, but knowing myself, I would have forced myself to run hard anyway.)

Jukola test race, women's course. We ran at Siggefora, a tough area with a lot of blueberry and other random undergrowth, making running quite hard. It's also a very technical area, so it made for a challenging course on this really warm Swedish National Day. I ran at "cruising" speed - speed at which you don't need to slow down to read the map. Made a couple of mistakes along the way and really didn't feel good, and was glad to have the shorter course. Ended up 2nd, 3 minutes behind Sophie. Hoping to be healthy in another day or so.

Orienteering 21:41 [5] *** 3.62 km (5:59 / km)
spiked:4/5c shoes: 2007 VJ Falcons

With the Jukola test race looming tomorrow, I figured it was worth trying to see how it would feel running hard through the woods, keeping an eye on my cold and on my shoulder. Tonight's training was an all-club relay training. Everyone who turned up was split up into teams, with each team consisting of 1 H21, 1 D21/H35/H17, 1 D17/H14/HD50, and 1 D14/H12/HD60. The H21's run the first leg. When they come back, they tag the next runner (the D21/H35/H17) and run the whole course along with them. Then these two tag the next runner and follow along with him/her, and the same for the final leg. The whole team needs to cross the finish line in order for the result to count. Obviously, this was more of a get-to-know-your-clubmates type of training than a serious thing, but it was still fun.
Right from the start I knew that I wasn't 100% healthy yet, as breathing was hard and running did not feel good. We more-or-less stayed in a pack, though somehow I found myself at the front with Albin and Michele after Lars, Tomas, and Ulf missed various controls. Of course, it was our turn next. I misread the control description (as did Albin, it turns out), and we both circled around looking for a flag on a hill, when it was really on the cliff below. Oh well. Ended up about 1 minute behind Ulf, who snuck by us, in the end. Then the pace slowed down, as I got to jog along while my teammates, all the way down to 10-year-old Sixten Jonsson, took turns navigating. It was actually fun to watch a 10-year-old navigate and remember the kinds of mistakes I used to make (much more recently than when I was ten!) In the end, Sixten took an excellent route choice to the last control, getting us ahead of two other teams, whose ten-year-olds were running off in the wrong direction, so it was a nice finish. :)

Note
(sick)

Still sick. Tried to fool my body into being healthy, but it caught on pretty quickly. Grrrrr.

Running 30:43 [2] 4.0 mi (7:41 / mi)
shoes: Saucony 2006

It was way too nice a day to not get myself outside, even if I have been feeling so-so all day. Nice, easy run around Stadsskogen.

T.rex training 10:00 [1]

Crunches and so on after the run.

Note

So it was seven years ago this week that I started logging my training on Attackpoint after Kenny Walker told me to try it out. It's been interesting to watch the site change and morph over these few years. In the beginning, it was just North American orienteers, and it probably took a couple of years until people whom I didn't know personally started logging. Then there was the scary phase when it seemed like adventure racers were about to take over and start dominating, but that somehow passed, though a lot of them stuck around on AP, some of them turning into orienteers in the process. Then, through robw, attackpoint suddenly had its Australian explosion. Out of nowhere, all these people from Down Under appeared, and it again seemed like they'd take over, but they seem to have integrated themselves into the AP world just fine. At that point, I could browse the training logs and claim that I knew about 50% of those logging personally. Then, in the last year, AP has gone truly international. Not counting a certain Masai Warrior, we seem to have 32 countries (and all continents but South America and Antactica) represented. Pretty cool. It's gotten to the point where I have met in real life a number of people whom I had only met on AP previously. It's been really cool to see AP grow like this and yet remain primarily orienteering-focused. Well done, Kenny, and keep it up!! Oh, and by the way, as of today, I know just about only 25% of those logging on AP personally.

Running 1:01:32 [2] 7.0 mi (8:47 / mi)

Running over to the start of backbana, jogging around on top, and running back home.

Running 29:55 [4] 5.0 km (5:59 / km) +300m 4:36 / km
shoes: Montrail Trail Shoes

Ran a lap of backbana with Jörgen Ohlin. Felt just fine during the first lap, but as soon as we started the planned second lap, I had nothing left. I don't think my cold from a couple of days ago is completely gone yet... So i jogged around on top waiting for Jörgen to finish the second lap before running back home.

Orienteering 1:55:34 [2] *** 17.25 km (6:42 / km)
shoes: 2007 model Falcons

Biked out to Nåsten on this warm, sunny afternoon and ran one of this winter's Tuesday night line-O's (course Z.) Orienteering in late spring/summer almost reminds me of night-O, since the visibility is so much lower than usual. It's still easier than night-O, of course, but some of the same elements are there, such as having to rely on your compass and trust that the cliff/knoll/rock you are looking for will appear as soon as you emerge from this dense patch of pines, as long as you keep your bearing.
Felt pretty tired the whole way, most body parts hurt.

Running 1:00:30 [2] 7.5 mi (8:04 / mi)
shoes: Saucony 2006

Slept over eleven hours (despite waking up in the middle night with a vicious calf cramp) and woke up feeling better - still a sore throat and a bit of headache, but much better than the last two days.
The sun was out for the first time all week, so I took a break from working on the sprint series standings to go for a trail run around the neighborhood.

T.rex training 10:00 [2]

A bit of core stuff after the run.
