Skiing 1:37:23 [2] 15.06 km (6:28 / km) +360m 5:46 / km

Joined Jeff T, Nevin, and a couple of Nevin's very fast skier friends for a leisurely skate ski from P7 in Gatineau Park while Alli and Inara went over to the Kemps'. Nice ski on a beautiful day. We saw a bunch of orienteers out skiing, including Marketa Graham and all the Merkas. I could get used to this place. Jeff's hip was hurting after a while, so we slowed down quite a bit, which I did not mind.

This was an awesome trip overall, one made possible by many friends in the orienteering community. Many thanks to Nevin, Jeff, Judy Kemp, Mitch, Valerie, and Ian for making this all happen!

Speedskating 2:00:00 [1] 13.6 km (8:49 / km) +149m 8:22 / km

Ian, Katie, Alli, Inara, and I skated on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. Inara was in the stroller, and Alli and I took turns pushing. It felt like all of Ottawa was out here today, but it got a bit less crowded once we got away from downtown. A nice, easy skate with good company. On the way back (it's a one-way canal, so no loop to be had), the ice was pretty mushy and beat up, so the going was slow, and Ian and Katie even took off their skates towards the end. Forgot to stop my GPS, so it shows our wanderings through Ottawa afterwards, including with Nevin, who appears to be everywhere.

Skiing 1:15:00 [2] 11.0 km (6:49 / km)

After spending Thursday night at the Collinsworths' in Syracuse, we drove up to Ottawa. We first hit the ski store and picked up some wax, ski clothes, baby skis for Inara, and got my skates fixed. After unloading at our AirBnB, we met Nevin at the start of the Gatineau Loppet and skate skied a loop that covered part of the Loppet course. I pulled Inara.

Kikkan Randall on the front page of 538 today: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-a-badass...

It's a cool article highlighting both Kikkan's amazing return to elite sport after giving birth, as well as the United States' terrible, backwards support system for new parents, as compared with other OECD countries.

One thing surprised me from this article: it states that Kikkan is the only mom on the U.S. Olympic team in Pyeonchang! That is really surprising to me.

Orienteering 30:00 [2]

We drove out to Clopper Lake in the rain for the Mid-Atlantic Junior Team training. I put out controls and then ran back to organize the juniors and lead the training.

Running 30:00 [2]

Running to and from the junior training.

We had a really good group today: 17 juniors including the usual suspects (Alexis, Diana, Josh, Sam, and Turner) plus a whole slew of newcomers from Patriot and Loudon County NJROTC programs. I had them do a mass-start one-person relay, which was a fun training to do with such a big group: fast and furious. I told Turner and Josh that they had five loops to do and challenged them to finish their five loops before anyone else finished their four.

They were close to succeeding, but Nate from Loudon and Zach from Patriot (JDT) beat them out. I then had each kid collect one control before jogging back to the parking lot.

Definitely a successful training, and really fun to have such a big group. I think in the future, I need to have a second adult present for groups of over 10 juniors or so. Also, I need to make it clear to parents and coaches how long the training will take so they aren't waiting around wondering where we are.

Hiking 2:30:00 [0]

Nice long Rock Creek hike with the family. My rock star wife carried Inara the whole way!

Cross-Training 50:00 [1]

Elliptical. Less boring than biking, somehow.

Hiking 1:40:00 [0]

Rock Creek hike with the family, taking turns carrying Inara in her backpack.

Cross-Training 55:00 [2]

Biking intervals at the gym. I found bike shorts that I inherited from Rob Walter in 2006 or so. Much better than trying to bike in shorts, as I'd been doing previously.

Hiking 1:50:00 [0]

We had a play date with our friends who live on the west side of Rock Creek Park, so we decided to walk over instead of driving or taking the metro. It took longer than I had anticipated - almost two hours, but it was nice to do a one-way hike in Rock Creek with the whole family. It started snowing towards the end.

Pool running 1:10:00 [1]

Another pool running session at the YMCA. We dropped Inara off at YMCA childcare, and both Alli and I got to work out. We then played with Inara in the pool for a while, which was a blast.
