COC Ultimate Orienteer #2 - Quincy Lakes
RG: http://rg.cascadeoc.org/rg2/#289&course=14&...

This started out ok and then rapidly went downhill. I was pleased with my route to 4, and was actually in the lead at that point (a whopping 12 minutes into the race). That's probably when the positives stopped. I was wobbly and a bit unsure to 5, but got it ok after spooking a herd of sleeping deer and a big owl (?).

Then on 6 I was fighting my compass the entire time and coming off my bearing. This probably cost me 1:30 or so. Control 7 was ok, but on 8 the wheels came off. I came very close to the flag, didn't see it, and instead of pausing and taking another look, I took off to relocate. Multiple relocations led me to the same spot, and I never went the additional 10 meters or so that would be needed to spot the flag. Eventually I got it.

I thought about quitting at that point, but then decided to get my money's worth and keep going. I am glad I did. It was a really enjoyable course in a great area. I navigated ok after this, except for a 30 second parallel error on 14, but the intensity wasn't there.

I'll chalk this one up to being rusty and out of shape. Both of these things are fixable.

Thanks to COC for a really fun weekend in great terrain! I'll be back.
