MUCH better today than yesterday. I made it through the first control just fine, but then screwed up on the second. I left the first control quickly, and checked my direction as I went. I was going too far left, so I adjusted and continued. Apparently, I didn't correct enough, because I missed the second control. Fortunately, I knew what I had done wrong, but it still took me too long to fix it. I had some other errors, but they were relatively small: checking the wrong boulder at #6; second guessing myself at #7 (I saw a flag on a similar feature on the way to 7, and I stopped to check, just in case); and misreading the control description for #22 (west side of rock pillar, I read as east side).

The uphill finish was tough!

This was an absolutely horrible race, starting on the first control. The start was at a 3-way intersection. I didn't orient my map, took a quick look, and said, "I don't want to go right," so I took the trail to the left. Big mistake! The trail that I rejected on the map was the walk up to the start. The trail to the right in the terrain is the one I wanted. The trail to the left is the one that I took. And what was worse is that the features on the wrong trail lined up with the features I was looking for (at least, they lined up in my head). When I missed the control, I assumed I had made a parallel error, and adjusted accordingly. When that also failed to find the control, I was completely lost! By the time I finally figured out where I was and got to the first control, I had been on the course for 35:41 already (almost 32 minutes of lost time), and almost 1.8 miles. Once I found myself, I stayed found, but I had a strong tendency to veer too far right all day long, causing more significant time losses along the way.

The only saving grace for the race was that I didn't finish DFL. One person even had more time lost than I did

Orienteering race 26:44 intensity: (1:35 @3) + (21:12 @4) + (3:57 @5) *** 2.42 mi (11:03 / mi) +337ft 9:46 / mi

I navigated cleanly, but lost some time on 10. It was behind a house, and I hesitated as I approached, because it didn't feel right (it felt like it should be off limits as a private residence). I had good route selection, and didn't fall for any of the "gotchya" routes.

NOTE: I started my watch late.
