US UltraLong Champs. Things were going well, and I was feeling good, until I sprained my ankle crossing a reentrant on the way to #9. I had several agonizing minutes to decide if I should attempt to continue, but ultimately, my ankle was in no shape to finish the course. Until today, I had never DNF'd in a race of any sort, so this was a lousy way to end the weekend.

I scrambled/crawled out of the reentrant to a trail, and started heading back toward the last water/food stop. About halfway there, I turned my map over, and realized that I was closer to the finish, so I turned and made my way back to the finish.

Today went better than last night, although I still had trouble at the start. I actually started out with a 180 error out of the start triangle for about 5-10 seconds before catching it and turning to run back through the start. I also veered too far to one side on the way to #2 without knowing it, but I made an educated guess that I was probably downhill of the control, and I was correct. After that, the course went fairly well with a couple of bobbles. Finished 2nd in my age group.
