After spending 12 minutes looking for 1, I wandered back to the start thinking I'm just having a REALLY bad day. It wasn't until I looked at another compass that I realized mine was pointing east. Not even perfectly, like maybe 85 degrees east.

After borrowing a crappy but working compass, I set out to do the just first loop of the course. Halfway, I feel something digging into my heel. Assuming it's a rock, I continue with just a little bit of discomfort. But by the end, I'm on one leg. So I remove my Icebugs expecting to find the thorn or pebble that ruined my run, only to find one of the studs TURNED INSIDE OUT poking up through the shoe's blood-soaked sole. As if I didn't have enough equipment problems today. Running the last bit on my toes didn't do wonders for my foot either.
