Orienteering race 2:05:27 [3] *** 5.37 mi (23:22 / mi) +113m 21:56 / mi
spiked:16/18c shoes: X-Talon 212

OCIN Annual New Years Day Meet at Rentschler Forest. Red course on a warm cloudy (40's) day but the rain on Monday made the woods wet and slippery. Fairly happy with my run. Lost time on C4 because I went straight across the "open" land inside the loop trail - it was actually at least med green. Missed C6 on my initial approach from the south hitting the reentrant to the west. Route choice error on C7 - I went north to the carriage road and ran all the way to the west trail and down to the road with the control at the culvert. I should have just ran straight across through the green. Missed the trail intersection on the way to C10 going too far east but caught myself fairly quickly. On C15, I did take the straight across route but got caught up in the honeysuckle above the ditch and along the ridge to the cabin. This control was misplaced - it was mapped to be on the water trough to the NW of the building but was placed N of the building on the water pipe. I lost time bashing through the honeysuckle junk getting to the trough and then saw it on the edge of the open area. Stephanie caught me at C7 and Jack Crawford caught me on the way to C12 so I had two people close by at the end of the course to push me.

Note

End-of-year reflection:
I didn't make any of my targets this year.
- run + warm up/cool down + trail run + mixed trail/road run [2-5]: 73% (293 miles) of 400 mile target;
- orienteering: 73% (166 miles) of 225 mile target
- biking: only 22% (97 miles) of 425 mile target

The biking target was too ambitious, especially since I was out of town for a month in the middle of the Multifit road biking season. I'm disappointed that I didn't get closer to either the run or orienteering targets. Dealing with hip bursitis for at least half the year and the rest of life getting in the way decreased my running volume. Even though I should have had a lot of orienteering time in Europe, I found that for all of the training runs and at the EYOC meet, I cut my runs short so that the juniors didn't have to wait for me.

So, going forward..... This winter/spring is going to be challenging as my four evenings a week spring semester teaching schedule will mean that I won't make it to Multifit M/W evening runs and Sat. am runs very often conflict with O-meets. I intend to run on Tues. and Thurs. mornings before going to campus and to try to motivate myself to do it, I'll leave the run + .... target at 400 miles for the year. To encourage myself to get some activity every day, even if it is just a short walk around the neighbourhood, I'm going to add a 175 mile walking goal. The orienteering goal will stay the same because I didn't get enough orienteering last year. The biking goal will be cut in half to 215 miles.

run 46:27 [3] 4.11 mi (11:18 / mi) +14m 11:11 / mi

MF early run in place of the evening run and managed to slip it in in the gap in the all-day rain. Used 9/1 intervals running with Mark E. early and then on my own. I have a hard time keeping my pace down when running with him despite him insisting that he adjusts his pace to mine.

MF Sat am Shark's tooth run. Haven't run early on Sat. morning very often lately and misjudged the amount of coffee I could drink before the run so had to cut the run short. We saw a small falcon-like bird with brown and white spots on the front and blue back and wing feathers sitting on a low branch on a tree right next to the street. I'm pretty sure it was a Merlin but this seemed like a strange place for one.
