hike 4:20:00 [3] 8.0 mi (32:30 / mi) +800m 24:48 / mi

We took advantage of Aidan's last school break before we leave and visited North Wales. Friday we drove around the country side and toured Holy Head and Caernarafon. Today we hiked up Mt. Snowdon; the highest peak in Wales and second highest in the UK. There are beautiful mountain lakes that the PYG trail, which we took on the way up, runs high above but our return trip on the Miner's Track skirted the lakes and went over a causeway across one of them.

Touring around Anglesey; visited a 12th century chapel, ruins from a "native" village from the Roman times, a Neolithic burial chamber, Holy Head town site including the dual ferry/train station, Red Wharf beach, and Caernafon.

Orienteering race 1:03:53 [3] *** 4.68 mi (13:39 / mi)
spiked:10/15c

Norfolk Orienteering Event at Roydon Common and Grimston Warren.

Rob and I went on an orienteering date as Aidan was off to the British School Orienteering Championship where he tied for first place in Boys year 7 (@mintore has some comments). Thanks to Glenn Richardson for taking Aidan along with a minibus full of Norwich School students.

The venue was really cool - mostly heath covered in heather with former sand quarries (early 20th century). Since the quarrying finished, the land had grown as a commericial coniferous forest that was taken out in the 1990s and returned to heath. There was no sign of the former forest except for one bright white patch on the map. The low relief in the heath didn't make for easy to find controls as humps covered with heather easily obscured lines of sight. The quarries had some interesting contours that were fun to figure out.

I was happy with my run and had a great time. Ended up 20 out of 27 on the Green course.
2 PM

Orienteering (clearing controls) 1:20:00 [2] 3.0 mi (26:40 / mi)

Clearing controls and exploring the venue some more. Spent some time visiting with the friendly resident ponies.

9 AM

run race (Norwich parkrun) 29:04 [3] 3.11 mi (9:21 / mi)

Norwich parkrun #6. Tied pb - need to push a bit harder to get below 29 min.
1 PM

walk 2:04:00 [2] 3.83 mi (32:22 / mi)

Exploring some of the Broads in Norfolk. We did a boardwalk hike at Barton Broad where they are in the process of clearing out the algae to let the Broad return to a reed bed. The reeds are collected for thatched roofs which we have seen an impressive number of here. Apparently they are water-tight and there is less worry about fires than in drier climes. We also walked along the River Thune out of Potter-Heigham. The marsh in this area had been drained but they are opening it up again to allow the reeds to grow. The Broads are not natural lakes but were dug in the Middle Ages for the peat - at some point there must have been at least a swamp.

Late afternoon run to see the ponies on a cool day. It is definitely beginning to feel like fall here. The leaves are turning and it is raining more but strangely, some of the summer plants are still blooming.

run race (Norwich parkrun) 29:05 [3] 3.11 mi (9:21 / mi)

After resting my still swollen ankle for the week, I felt pretty good about my run. Hopefully I will get out more this coming week.

Orienteering race (November Classic) 1:39:08 [3] *** 5.9 km (16:48 / km) +75m 15:48 / km
spiked:16/21c

Short Blue (W45L) course in the New Forest near Southampton. Mostly flat open forest with lots of mapped and unmapped (smaller) ditches. I felt good about most of my navigation but didn't feel comfortable running through the woods on my ankle which wasn't painful but didn't feel very strong. I ended up just off the bottom of my class but I feel like I have improved since the end of July.

Note

We went out to see Stonehenge before our 1:20 pm race starts - impressive. After our runs, we toured the Cathedral and saw one, and the best maintained, of the four remaining original copies of the Magna Carta - inspiring.
1 PM

Orienteering race (Salisbury City Race) 1:42:18 [3] *** 6.5 km (15:44 / km)
spiked:21/31c

The Salisbury City Race was another fun race and even more technical than the Cambridge City Race despite the more grid-like street plan. Lots of walls, small parks, tunnels to get under the major roads, and even a parking garage. We started out of the back of a school in the Salisbury Cathedral Close and finished on the Cathedral lawn. I feel good about my run but didn't make the best route choice for the longest leg (C12 to 13). I could have easily been below 100 min but probably not a place up in the standings (41/47 finishers in Veterns Women (40-50) with a few more to come in). My ankle felt fine but I didn't push it too hard.

12 PM

walk 1:46:00 [2] 3.6 mi (29:27 / mi) +312m 23:12 / mi

Walk around the top of Cheddar Gorge. There were some spectacular views of the Gorge and the surrounding flat land. Wiltshire and Somerset are very pretty with some flowers that seem to be spring flowers still blooming, or perhaps, blooming again.

My ankle complained more on the rocky and muddy climbs and descents. I hope the forest run on Sunday won't be as rocky.

5 PM

walk 1:30:00 [1] 2.0 mi (45:00 / mi)

Walk around Bath after dark. We were too late to tour the Roman Baths but the walk around the city was interesting. We even found a burrito place for dinner - there are some things I miss from home :-).
