Setting controls for Union County O practice.

trail running 3:00 [2]

Slow run in trail and terrain to get the kids warned up. Total of 11 today: 6 HS and 5 MS.

After the warm-up, the kids did a 4-control 500 meter compass course (full size control flags on described features, but map was a blank paper with just the course, north lines and a scale bar, and a boundary (road and lake). The idea was to learn / practice basic use of compass to go the direction of a leg shown on the map.

After that, divided the kids into two teams; each team "hid" 3 control flags. Then each team had to find and recover the other teams flags. Sort of like capture the flag, but with no guards or tagging. First team back with all 3 flags AND all 4 of their team members was the winner. (3 of the kids had to leave after the compass course before this game started). Objective was just to get the kids running in the forest (with limited map use to stay within their territory).
