orienteering race 44:39 [3] *** 3.7 km (12:04 / km)
11c weight:160lbs shoes: Jalas hi-top O' shoes

green course at Bear Creek BSA Camp. short but steep. Light snow and temps in the 20's.

The roads were terrible. I thought cedarcreek was never going to show up to run SI... It took him over two hours to make the one hour drive to the camp. There were many tales of traffic jams, cars in ditches, etc.

Leaving the camp, I stopped to pick up the last control, which was on a sign by the camp gate. Even before getting out of the car, I could hear a loud noise like a continuous car horn, and I was thinking "What the heck is that. Surely they don't have some kind of alarm on the gate". Then I saw the skid marks going off the road and down into the woods. Fortunately the teenage driver (not an orienteer) was uninjured, but he'd slid off the 90 degree downhill road bend at the camp entrance, gone down a steep embankment about 10 or 15 meters into the woods, and turned his family minivan on its side. They say most accidents happen close to home. He'd only made it less than 100 meters from his driveway, including the off-road portion.

weights / strength 20:00 [2]

minor corrections to Miami Univ. Western Woods map.

walking 30:00 [1] * 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)
weight:161lbs shoes: Brooks Accel

Minor updating to Miami Univ. western Woods map and flagged a few control locations.

Spent several hours of computer time updating the map and planning courses. The parts of the map used for the New Year's Sprints on Dec 31, 2006 had been updated then, but unfortunately, for whatever stupid reason, I did those updates after I extracted the sprint areas from the overall map of the area. Duh. So I spent a lot of time cutting partial maps and putting pieces back together to save re-drawing all the corrected stuff. At least everything still lined up with the original coordinate system.

orienteering 20:00 [3] * 2.2 km (9:05 / km)
15c weight:162lbs shoes: Brooks Accel

Training exercise at UCMS. Ran an easy (white/yellow) course on school grounds, dropping colored cards at each point. Students followed, with the first one starting 2 minutes behind me, then at one minute intervals. I ran a very circuitous route to prevent following, due to a dusting of light snow, which was continuing to fall. Also stopped to re-orient a student who I met far from where he should have been. Each student had his/her own color to pick up.

walking 30:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Accel

Mix of jogging and walking, spent a lot of time working with students to re-orient map, thumbing their position to track progress, and identifying features.

weights / strength 10:00 [2]

putting up new shelving unit (with help from Kyle), moving boxes of books & O' equipment.
