Saturday Jul 28, 2007 #

running race 18:08 intensity: (12:00 @2) + (6:08 @5)

Mississippi Mile over Chain of Rocks bridge - warmup and then back over bridge, slight uphill first 1/3, then level, then downhill to finish. Happy with time(6:08), never been that fast anyway, didn't think I was in very good running shape and this isn't much slower than years past (Don K. - 50+ -went 5:15!!!)

biking 2:45:00 [3]

from bus loop to Chain of Rocks bridge. Then over the bridge and into illnois trail system w/ Rick, looping back to finish with a couple of miles on Rte. 3 to East St. Louis Metro station, then home from metro.

biking 50:00 [3]

to meeting in webster. shoulder hurts when i pull directly out (i'm visualizing some strings that hold the ball in the socket being stretched) and i shift weight off that arm when i hit bumps, but otherwise being on the bike feels great.

biking 40:00 [3]

to nursing home and back

Wednesday Jul 25, 2007 #

running 46:00 intensity: (26:00 @3) + (20:00 @4)

run to track, warmup laps, mile repeats - 6:43, 6:41, 6:57, run back

biking 35:00 [3]

to meeting - but crashed real close to where I flatted last week and walked to the same bike shop! twilight zone. this time I was going around a corner and hit a patch of 'chip' that had not been 'sealed'. as I hit i remember thinking 'this is hard - this time I'm going to the hospital'. A road crew guy ran up to me and asked if i was ok. I said i don't know, i thought so, and thanked him, but pointed out that the 'chip' gravel was a serious hazard to cyclists. Duh - i guess he could have figured that out at that point. Thank goodness just a whole lot of scrapes, and a sprained shoulder. I think what saved me from more serious injury is that i hit so many diferent points of contact almost simultaneously. Worst I've ever crashed though. Front tire sidewall was shredded. Need to be more careful, and be less lackadaisical about changing out race tires to more commuter friendly tires.

biking 40:00 [2]

usual errands

Sunday Jul 22, 2007 #

biking 50:00 [3]

to and from forest park

running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

bringing out a missing punch

orienteering race 40:00 [4]

2 sprints. Sprint #1,Started 1 minute before fast visitor from bay area, so had the benefit of seeing what worked and what didn't. I bobbled and was tentative at 2, took bad line through woods, and went wrong way on serge. So he caught me around there. Blasted through woods on 3, 4, etc. while he chose open lines and started pulling away from him. Then when we got out in the open, after a whle near the end, he caught me and passed me. Fast runner. So blasting through green was generally faster.

Sprint #2: A lot of open and paved running, not much decision making, tired. I actually passed on the easy route on the road because I didn't want to run there, and went same distance on trail and woods, which probably cost me 3rd place. Rick stayed on the trails, dont know why i plunged through the woods. It was road rage, I guess.

running 26:00 [2]

control pickup. running w/ big bag of stakes was awkward.

Saturday Jul 21, 2007 #

yoga 10:00 [1]

biking 10:00 [1]

bike to church

Friday Jul 20, 2007 #

running 15:00 [2]

15 minutes of uncomfortable and intermittent running on the cleat protectors when i had a flat, and the replacement tube exploded when i couldn't control the co2 cartiridge, to the nearest bike shop (thankfully was near)

biking 2:25:00 [3]

to meeting in u city, then 2nd bike shop, then downtown, then home - great weather for doing errands on a bike

Thursday Jul 19, 2007 #

yoga 15:00 [1]

biking 1:00:00 [3]

to sprint and then rei and whole foods and home, w/ saddlebags.

orienteering race 25:00 [3]

brisk warmup run and then Tilles sprint in the rain, nice course.

Wednesday Jul 18, 2007 #

biking 40:00 [2]

easy 5:30 am ride to stretch the legs - already humid, no hint of morning coolness.

Tuesday Jul 17, 2007 #

yoga 30:00 [1]

biking 1:05:00 [3]

getting to track - sans bus interlude - and back

running 30:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (15:00 @4)

supposed to do 3 x mile. felt not good and hot. heart has been surging and thumping lately. if it keeps up will seek med. attention. 6:30, 6:38, last one on pace for 6:30 but bailed halfway through.

Monday Jul 16, 2007 #

biking 45:00 [2]

2 5# sacks of potatoes and a half gallon of pineapple juice, on top of everything else. those saddlebags rock.

'weight' training 20:00 [1]

Sunday Jul 15, 2007 #

yoga 15:00 [1]

biking 1:00:00 [3]

aimless, restless riding - some tempo laps in the park

running 30:00 [3]

then decided to pile on some running while it was still cool outside, and to go for longer than the sprint distances

biking 15:00 [2]

st. gabe's & back

Saturday Jul 14, 2007 #

running warm up/down 20:00 [3]

to and from track

running intervals 21:00 [4]

Ouch - something wrong here. These times barely qualify as speedwork. Hopefully its 'die down, spring back' 5 x 1000 meters 4:18, 4:12, 4:10, 4:09, 4:17

or could it be related to...

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/12/fashion/12Fitnes...

science is finally catching up with common sense, sadly

Friday Jul 13, 2007 #

running 35:00 [3]

from nusing home. middle section from chippewa to park gate was 10 min. so not moving as slow as it felt

Thursday Jul 12, 2007 #

biking 1:35:00 [3]

one last trip to see my father. legs getting tired of biking, need to get runnning.

Wednesday Jul 11, 2007 #

biking 1:30:00 [3]

to fathers house, just in town a couple of days, and back .

swimming 30:00 [3]

open water swim in creve couer lake, walk w/ my father afterwards

Tuesday Jul 10, 2007 #

biking 10:00 [3]

to the printer, standing up, for practice and becasue for some reason the saddle felt quite uncomfortable

Monday Jul 9, 2007 #

biking 30:00 [3]

to nursing home and shopping. new ortlieb saddle bags work great, release easily and carry in to store to fill with groceries, then just hook on when outside. and its a relief to ride w/o the pack in this weather

biking 1:00:00 [4]

partly to meeting, took cooling breaks on bus and metrolink.
then home form my father's on grants trail.

Sunday Jul 8, 2007 #

swimming race 9:45 [3]

swimming with concrete blocks tied to my wrists and ankles

biking race 32:30 [4]

the swim weighed on me, didnt feel in good rhythm until second half.
maybe need to look at longer events

running race 20:40 [4]

not bad, ocnsidering the hills. still felt a lot of that deadness in the thighs that I dont feel when I practice bike/run. Guess I'm not doing them intensely enough.

Note

Sprint triathlon: 21st overall, 1st in age group. I think a lot of fast people had other things to do. Just a few seconds slower than last year, but w/ faster transitions, so...as much as it frustrates me, I think it was a slower swim. Not the sub 1 hour race I wanted, but I'm grateful to have raced at all.

biking 38:00 [4]

good tempo ride back from fathers house along grants trail. something wrong here, if I had really gone all out this morning, could i do this ride? maybe its the cardiovascular speed limiter kicking me into longer endurance events. maybe i'm not really a 'sprinter' after all.

Saturday Jul 7, 2007 #

biking 10:00 [2]

over to park - short bursts of speed

running 10:00 [3]

hilll at park and then in alley - short bursts of speed

yoga 10:00 [1]

Friday Jul 6, 2007 #

biking 38:00 [2]

to nursing home and back.

Thursday Jul 5, 2007 #

running 42:00 [3]

run through early morning rain to park to river des peres, along the charming burnt weeds from the semi-annual herbicide application. not sure why the agency that seems to push 'sustainable' stormwater management indulges in these antithetical practices.

Wednesday Jul 4, 2007 #

yoga 20:00 [1]

biking 20:00 [2]

checking out my bike after some repairs, and looking for a helmet someone left at the park.

Tuesday Jul 3, 2007 #

biking 15:00 [1]

errands w/ new saddle bags. before i got on, bike seemed tippy, but no problems whatsoever. these will make a lot of errands, like food shopping, easier. of course, i'll miss the great workout cycling w/ 50# pack of groceries gives in core strength etc. Or will I?

biking 1:20:00 [3]

long somewhat trumped-up errand to fill lull in work and take advantage of decent weather - via grants trail to crestwood to have eyeglasses adjusted

Sunday Jul 1, 2007 #

biking 1:30:00 [3]

'recovery' ride with spinning hill intervals @ whitecliff w/ bill and jay in the middle. totally trashed. probably shouldnt have done this. tommorow is a rest day for sure/
