running 2:26:06 [5]
25k Chubb was re-routed because of flooding, so we just did just out and backs on the hilliest section. Brutal, I felt sorry for the 50k runners having to do 4 out-and-backs, but maybe they didnt need my sympathies, seemed to be flying along.
First split was 1:06 which was fine, but fell apart badly on the next out and back (1:19), dropped from 4th to 9th in the second half . Good news was left foot didn't give me any trouble, (ran w/ the cushy True Grits) but could barely walk after finish because of wrenched knee ligaments that I didn't even notice while I was running - so maybe my body shut down a little to protect the knee.
Ran the same course in 2008 - time was 5 minutes faster this time, but what I wrote in my log then still applies - "First in 'Old Guys Who Could Not Run the 50k and Where the Fast Old Guys Did Not Show Up' Class"...and it is a very small race. Apparently, I would have been first in the 50+class too, because they gave me the 50+ plaque by mistake, and then later switched it out for the 'Grand Master' plaque.
A little perturbed , because I have been eating very well, and not really training that much...yet my weight after the race (after wolfing down assorted chocolate, oatmeal, and later pancakes) was down 6-8 pounds from my regular racing weight. If anything, in the weeks prior to the race I actually thought I had picked up a couple of pounds, so definitely something to check out.
Cold but sunny to start, (made the mistake of throwing my gloves off for the second lap)...and amazing caskins and racemes hanging from the budding trees, so delicate and so beautiful. I 'almost' wished I was running the 50k as they could enjoy the milder temps...'almost'.
