Trail Run warm up/down 7:05 [1] 0.8 mi (8:51 / mi) +10m 8:32 / mi

Same start as last year. Similar warm up and pee.

Orienteering race 2:15:30 [3] 12.3 mi (11:01 / mi) +477m 9:50 / mi

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

Hell, it was the best of times. Sprained ankle or no, the Traverse is awesome. It's half as long (or a bit over) as the Highlander, but half an hour from home, not half a day. The terrain is fun, the map is passable, and the soup at the end perfect. Also, the rain held off until I sprained my ankle and my uncleared dibbler filled, which meant it was a three-fer.

1. Took the same trail as last year from the start with Jordan and Ian. Jordan was ahead but went high, I saw not that many contours, Ian went low and found the control. I followed him in.

2. Long leg to 2. I followed Ian but stayed lower than him and popped out on the trail at the same time. Four of us then ran the trail and the road (6:54 mile dropped here) and the trails. I decided against bashing the swamp; I didn't want wet feet this early in the race, so ran around. Maybe lost a few seconds, but Ian got caught up in some greenbriar. Found the control well; other guy way overran it as I correctly read it at the top of the hill.

3. Quick run to 3, spiked nicely.

4. Took the left trail to 4. I didn't attack well, though, and Ian and other guy caught me in to the control.

5. I took a good route to 5, but executed the end poorly. Up the right side of the slash green, and across a bench. But the cliffs are not that well demarcated, and I couldn't figure out where I needed to go down. Most of the gray is unmapped, although I overlooked that and it could have been helpful. Finally realized I was way east of where I needed to be, sidehilled over to find the control. Alex and others were around here.

6. But I killed 6. Took the around trail, catching up to and passing Ian. I perfectly read the terrain and bashed up the spur and just ran right to the control. Perfect spike. (i.e. I won this control by 38 seconds=10%)

7. Spike, but an easy spike. Dodged traffic well.

8. Mostly spiked, mostly following Jordan (on his second butterfly).

9. Also following Jordan.

10. Butterfly middle.

11. It's fun to have some technical stuff here. Found this control well.

12. And then I hit Ari death terrain. Flat, knobbly, no real features. Wandered, found the control, lost the time I'd gained since 5.

13. Butterfly again. Drink, cookies.

14. Two mistakes here. Had to pull off for horsies. And didn't attack well at all. No plan. Followed others.

15. Good route, well executed. I'm not up to "full speed no mistakes" but I'm happy with "good route well executed." Stayed to the left of the pond, and then just went straight up the hill to the top. That put me on a trail that had a pronounced left in it. At that point, it was a contour across beautiful woods to a little reentrant. Easy spike.

16. Spiked this one as well. Obvious trail run fast downhill, then a good run down the valley.

17. Borked this. Read to 18 (close together) and went to that trail. Went back to find Alex and someone else wandering around. Found the control somewhere off yonder with them.

18. Found it well, drank water.

19. This was the super duper high point of the race for me. Alex went off on a straight line and I decided that was not for me and blindly took a trail. I read the route, found myself, and made a plan. Good route, well executed. After the trail, contour to the stream. Climb the stream, leaving it to the left of the cliffs. Follow these to a dot ravine. Find the rocks. And it worked, perfectly. So well, I was able to see Alex too high, punch, keep going up and then run down without letting her know where the control was.

Sorry Alex.

20. Down to the trail. Second big rock. Reentrant. Spike.

21. Run across the trail, find the big flat white area. Sprain my ankle. OH THAT WASN'T IN THE PLAN. Hobble around, follow Alex, because pain = not thinking much about navigating. Alex told me to go easy and think about Future Ari. A good idea, but then again, Alex wanted to beat present Ari. Also Present Ari's ankle hurt a lot.

22. Follow Alex to 22, slowly. Thanks, Alex. No beep as my SI card was filled. Whoops. Punch old school.

23. Walk to 23, up the ski hill to the road.

24. Wander around looking for rootstocks.

Finish.

Eat soup. Wait or Maartje, then go and get the car off yonder and get texted she is back and cold. Drive back. Eat more soup. Go home and hope ankle is okay.

Rollerski long 1:56:04 [1] 15.7 mi (7:24 / mi) +268m 7:01 / mi

Off to ski Littleton. First time classic skiing in … a long time. One of my ratchets is slipping slightly, which was fun. Skied with the shorter group with slightly slower skiers. Felt pretty good putting some speeds on and went back for a repeat on Middle Road. Nice day to be relaxed. This was a relaxed week. Jeez.

Run hills 35:00 [1] 3.3 mi (10:36 / mi) +184m 9:02 / mi

Several back hills in the rain and one set of spicy stairs for me, and some burpies and pull ups. Taking it pretty easy.

Run 30:45 [3] 1.5 mi (20:30 / mi) +567m 9:26 / mi

Great day at the stadium. Cold. But no shirt. Just perfect. Fire drill day, and I ran 37 sections in 28 minutes including 30 or 40 push ups. This was pretty fast and perfect. Hopefully it's cold next Wednesday.
