"East Kowen Forest" (ACT). Course 3 / M50: 14km, +300m, 14c. 6th/10 (36:01 behind Nick Wilkinson BF). 17°C. TE 3.6.
Felt like I was on the pace to #6 but then mistakenly rode up the single track to #10(7) instead of #7. Lost 8:30 to there and then more on the slow exit. I think I must have spotted the "7" at the end of the code. Very disappointed. The long ride either side of #9(10) took a lot of energy. #12(13) - Possibly should have followed the single track longer leaving #11(12). Winsplits showed a 2:43 loss. Best legs: #F (3rd/9); #3 (4th/9). Best pos: 3rd/9 (#3). I was actually a competitive 5th at #5, just 2:55 behind 1st and 14' ahead of 6th.

First ever mass start MTBO race. Started watch a bit late so missed the first 1:30 / 400m on GPS trace. Too many mistakes by not paying enough attention to the map, especially when the controls were so obvious. The first 7 controls were a butterfly loop around a pivot (#1/4/7) before a big loop to the finish. #1/2/3 - OK. #4 - Missed turn (lost 30"). #5/6/7 - OK. #8 - Started riding to #9 (-2' up/down hill). #9 - Rode ride past control (-1:30). #10/11/12/F - OK. Best leg: #5 (2th/9). Best pos: 3rd/9 (#5).

I remember some of these trails from the early 1980s when I lived in Canberra. A lot more pine trees then. On Sunday mornings I'd be one of the troop following Deek for as long as we could on his 22mi training runs. Starting slowly from Duffy (S), the pace gradualIy built up over the first hour, as we dropped back one by one over the second hour. The undulating climb from Coppins Crossing (W) to Uriara Road (SW) always got the better of me so 18mi (30km) was enough.

Course setter's notes: This is a fast and furious course reminiscent of Strauss’s “Fledermaus”. The plot is an utterly farcical romp through plantation pine, urban fringe and the illustrious National Arboretum. The course will take riders hither and thither over loose gravel, soft sand, ragged rocks, Newcastle type bogs, prickly blackberries and eroded ruts. Along the way they might encounter bounding kangaroos, swooping magpies, deadly brown snakes, spikey echidnas, dog- walkers, random runners, commuter cyclists and perhaps horses, which of course, they should give way too. Apart from these standard Canberra normalities, this evening event in the new Daylight Saving Time will mean a low sun angle, so a helmet peak is recommended!

"Killingworth South". 13/28c. 22 points (25 less 3 penalty, max 53), 2:42 late. 14th/17 (28 pts behind Steven Todkill). Wet - recent rain. Completed the line course in 33:53 (201-202-203-204-205-206 = 12 pts). Decided to do a loop of score controls in the S part of the map and see where that got me (213-212-231-222-211-221-232 = 13 pts). Probably should have skipped 221 and gone for 223-224. Might have had time for 216 as well. Missed the finish track which cost me another 2 pts. Tried the click-in pedals again to see if I could gain any advantage from them. Definitely NO. Back wheel slipped out on a single track leaving 203 and I ended up pinned under the bike. And shortly after 221 going up a hill I unclicked my left foot for safety but the bike tipped right with my forearm taking the weight. A nice lump developing below my elbow. I also think I was riding too tentattively just in case I had to stop suddenly. Switching back to my other pedals for the upcoming ACT & AUS Champs. 16°C. TE 2.8.
