paddling 2:30:00 [3]

Down river paddling on the shenandoah. A nice lazy river with a few small rapids. We stayed near the front of the pack without working too hard - didn't think it was worthwhile to exert at this point in the race. We were still happy when this section was over, given 1hr of paddling training so far this year.

orienteering 4:00:00 [3]

From the paddle we headed up onto the ridge for some orienteering. I was amped to chase after Tecnu and Vince wisely wanted to go slower. We got two of the optional checkpoints up there and strategically left two, thinking they weren't worth the effort, since we figured nobody would clear the course.

Bike-O around the State Park. These trails were awesome - ideal for mountain biking. We flew down one big descent, then started back up and my gears started jamming. I didn't know what was wrong - but climbing was not working, I could see the chain jumping. After a while of staring at my bike Vince noticed that the nuts that hold the chain rings together were all out except one (should be 4). We were able to get one off of his bike and one onto mine and carried on. Got all CPs.

orienteering 2:00:00 [3]

more orienteering, this time on foot, around the state park. nailed everything - none of the navigation was too challenging on this course. we again left one CP that didn't seem worth the time expenditure.

mountain biking 7:00:00 [3]

this is where the wheels started to fall off for me. after a few puzzle challenges we headed over the ridge to a campground TA. the ridge was a total hike a bike most of the way up and half way down - a steep rock garden.

I had been racing as if it was an 8-12 hour race and my fitness is good enough for a 4 hour race, so this was bound to happen, but I was bagged by the time we hit the campground.

didn't want to leave the nice campfire, but we headed off on another bike-O up the next ridge. I was disappointed to find that I couldn't bike that ridge either. Maybe during the day with full energy, but it wasn't happening on half a tank.

We foolishly biked right past 26 on our way to 28 and had to come back the same way instead of going straight down. We left a lot more CPs up there than we had planned b/c it was taking so long and we thought it would be good to get off the bikes for awhile.
