running 3:00:00 [3] 30.0 km (6:00 / km)

RtH with Tom and Vince

It was clear from the point we got the maps that the race wasn't going to be won or lost on nav.

From the start, took off down the powerline, and soon met up with the front of the pack (who went through the campsites) heading into 1. I think we were first into 1, but that was the last we saw of the lead. We were a couple minutes down on the top teams and never made it up the rest of the way.

I started taking the trails through the town sections, but soon realized that we were losing time to the teams that stuck to the roads (that weren't marked on the maps).

The ravines were fun. I think our nav to 11 and 20, staying low and avoiding the ravine climbs were effective, but i'll need the split results to verify. It did mean that we waded through 16 mile creek twice (shockingly cold) and some hogweed. Going into 19 we were behind Giggles and losing ground, but got ahead going into 20 by going the low route. Wow, they're strong runners.

I felt really good - better than I thought with almost no training since tennessee. I think my new Hokas are awesome - my post-run old man aches and pains are minimal in these shoes. I really think the shoes make a difference for the pounding my 215 lbs make.

I should have had a tow rope - should have known this would be a runners race and a tow can make the difference. Can only wonder if it would have made up the 2 mins we needed.

Oh well, great fun, and nice to be in the thick of it.
