Race the Train. Train won comfortably, by around 9 minutes.
Had been told by many that the second half of the race was harder than the first, due to more hills and some single track parts. Which was true, but the way out - across large grassy fields - felt a bit of a slog. Started off comfortably through the town and tried to keep the pace going when it went off road - gained places on the rougher parts/uphills. Didn't really want to push the pace and almost on 8 min/mile average for the first 5 miles. Hit "halfway" (7 miles) in 57 minutes.
The way back started in a bit of a train up/along one of the single track sections - when this opened out I managed to get past. At about 9 miles, there were hints of cramp in the calves, so adjusted running style to a more heel-strike. This was in the section where it was a bit softer underfoot too. Stopped to stretch out, before the train overtook shortly after the course rejoined the out-and-back section. The last section back along the road feeling more of a hobble than a run. Surprised to see post-run that I was still averaging 8:15/mile pace in the last 3 miles, even with having to stop to stretch out again.
Race certainly a bit different to the norm and one of the biggest I've done. It would be nice to have a bit more interest on the way out, but might still have to return when a bit fitter...
